Ohio State claims 97 bouts to capture first fencing crown

Ohio State won its first National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships team title, outscoring second-place Penn State by 34 points March 25-28 at Brandeis' Gosman Athletic Center.

The Buckeyes improved on last year's fourth-place finish in the championships with 194 points, while Penn State retained the runner-up status it earned at last year's event, scoring 160. Rounding out the top five were Notre Dame, St. John's (New York) and Columbia.

Ohio State posted the second-highest team score in the five years the championships have featured six weapons. The Buckeyes won 97 bouts in both the men's and women's competition.

Penn State has either won or placed second in every championship since the event was introduced in 1990.

In individual events, Ohio State's Adam Crompton defended his 2003 sabre crown, defeating Sergey Isayenko from St. John's, 15-14, in the title bout. Benjamin Igoe of Rutgers finished third.

Ohio State also was victorious in men's foil, with Boaz Ellis defeating Yale's Cory Werk, 15-8. Nitai Kfir of St. John's finished third.

In men's epee, St. John's took the top two spots with Arpad Horvath and Benjamin Bratton finishing first and second, respectively. Horvath defeated Bratton 15-7 in the final. Michal Sobieraj of Notre Dame rounded out the top three.

On the women's side, Notre Dame was dominant, winning two of the events and placing second in the third.

Valerie Providenza of Notre Dame won the women's saber, defeating Penn State's Sophia Hiss, 15-8. Louise Bond-Williams of Ohio State place third in the event.

Alicja Kryczalo and Andrea Ament, both of Notre Dame, finished first and second, respectively, in the foil, with Kryczalo defeating Ament, 15-7. Ohio State's Hanna Thomson finished third.

In the epee, Anna Garina of Wayne State (Michigan) defeated Notre Dame's Kerry Walton, 15-10, to win the event. Anne Kercsmar of Duke finished third.

Host Brandeis finished 17th of 33 schools, with 28 points, and was the highest-placing Division III school in the event. Brandeis also was the third-highest placing team from New England, behind Harvard and Yale.
