Alaska Fairbanks shows steady hand in sixth straight crown

Alaska Fairbanks captured its sixth straight National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships team title March 12-13 at Murray State. The title, the Nanooks' seventh overall, ties the team with West Virginia for consecutive championships won.

Nevada collected a second-place finish with a score of 6,185 out of a possible 6,400, and Navy took third with a score of 6,182.

The Nanooks made a sweep of the air rifle and small bore competitions, registering scores of 1,567 out of a possible 1,600 and 4,706 out of a possible 4,800, respectively, in the two disciplines for a combined score of 6,273.

Navy edged Nevada by one point for second in air rifle with a mark of 1,552. Kentucky, competing only in smallbore, took second in the discipline at 4,663 and Army was third at 4,638.

In individual competition, Murray State's Morgan Hicks collected the air rifle individual championship with a score of 398 out of 400. With only six points separating the top seven shooters in the air rifle competition, Matthew Rawlings of Alaska Fairbanks came in second at 396. Rawlings fired 1,179 out of a possible 1,200 to top teammate Joseph Hein by one point for the individual smallbore championship.
