ACADEMICS

Group recommends new name, frequency of calculation for metric

The group working on a real-time rate of academic performance for currently enrolled Division I student-athletes has recommended changing the name of the metric and how frequently it will be calculated.

The working group wants the rate to be referred to as the Annual Academic and Retention Rate (AARR) because it believes that the former Annual Academic Progress Rate didn't emphasis retention enough.

Also, the AARR now will calculate term-by-term performance rather than year by year. Eligibility and retention still will be weighted equally, but now student-athletes will earn a possible four points in a semester system (six in a quarter system), one each for eligibility and retention per term. Thus, if an otherwise academically eligible athlete leaves during the second semester, the institution will lose one of four points in the AARR calculation instead of one of two.

ACADEMICS

Division II group seeks changes to academic eligibility requirement

The Division II Academic Requirements Committee is recommending that student-athletes be required to have completed six hours from the previous semester or quarter to be eligible for competition.

The committee recommended that the Management Council sponsor legislation to amend Bylaw 14.4.3.1 to specify that a student-athlete must earn six semester or quarter hours of academic credit the preceding regular academic term in which the student-athlete has been enrolled full time at any collegiate institution.

DIVISION III

Membership Committee slots three provisional member classes

The Division III Membership Committee has slotted three classes of provisional members through a membership drawing.

Those institutions will enter a four-year provisional process that will result in full Division III membership if successfully completed.

The selections represent the first time institutions have been able to enter the Division III provisional process since the membership moratorium was lifted in August 2002.
