ATHLETICS REFORM

Knight Commission to resume review of intercollegiate athletics

The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics will resume its high-profile review of reform in college sports next fall.

Institutional presidents who are members of the Commission discussed reconvening recently in Washington, D.C. They included Michael Adams from the University of Georgia, Carol Cartwright of Kent State University, Mary Sue Coleman of the University of Michigan, Thomas K. Hearn of Wake Forest University, Gerald Turner of Southern Methodist University and Charles E. Young of the University of Florida. The Knight Foundation also invited two presidents who had not served on previous Commissions -- Elson Floyd of the University of Missouri system and Steve Sample of the University of Southern California.

Knight Commission Chair Bill Friday, president emeritus at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, said no decisions came from the meeting "except that we will continue our involvement in what's going on in higher education."

He said the decision to reconvene was prompted by recent cases of academic fraud in high-profile Division I-A institutions.

DIVERSITY

NCAA moves toward initiation of football Coaches Academy

The NCAA is progressing on an ambitious initiative to address the lack of minorities in football coaching.

NCAA committee and staff members, along with representatives from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), the Black Coaches Association and the NFL, are formatting the NCAA Coaches Academy, which will kick off in conjunction with the AFCA convention in January.

The academy is an approach organizers hope will have the same impact in football coaching that the recently created Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males has had on advancing minority athletics administrators in college sports in general.
