LEADERSHIP

NCAA accepting applications for minority leadership institute

The NCAA currently is accepting applications for its Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males. The Institute is designed to enhance the diversity of leadership in intercollegiate athletics through a 12-month leadership-training and skills-development experience.

Enrollment will be limited. Each participant must complete four weekend development sessions on leadership and administration; human resource management; finance and fund-raising; and booster, public and media relations before enrolling in the week-long intensive workshop.

Additional information and application materials can be found on the NCAA Web site (www.ncaa.org) on the education programs, grant and research of the home page.

CORPORATE CHAMPIONS

Pontiac, Cingular sign deals to serve as corporate champions

The NCAA, in conjunction with CBS and ESPN, has announced that Pontiac and Cingular Wireless have signed multiyear contracts to become NCAA corporate champions.

Pontiac and Cingular join Coca-Cola as participants in the enhanced corporate partnership program, which is administered by CBS Sports.

General Motors has participated in the NCAA corporate partner program since 1987. Cingular also returns to the NCAA program, having been an NCAA corporate partner since 2001.

Under the corporate champion agreement, Pontiac and Cingular will receive rights to use the NCAA marks; will support the NCAA's 87 championships in 22 sports through advertising, promotional initiatives and marketing programs; and will participate in on-site activities at numerous NCAA championships.

Pontiac and Cingular also will align their promotions to support the NCAA's core values.

SPORTSMANSHIP

NCAA keeps sportsmanship focus with town-hall meeting

NCAA President Myles Brand headed a panel that staged a "town hall" meeting March 17 in Indianapolis to discuss sportsmanship and fan behavior issues.

Other panelists included Robert Kanaby executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations; Stephanie White-McCarty, a former all-American basketball player at Purdue University and current WNBA player; and Alfreeda Goff, associate commissioner of the Horizon League. The meeting was televised live in Indianapolis.

On February 20, more than 100 national leaders in higher education, intercollegiate athletics, city government, media and law enforcement gathered in Dallas to discuss ways to curb inappropriate behavior and violence before, during and after intercollegiate athletics events.
