Excessive postgame celebrations topic of February 20 summit
Out-of-control postgame celebrations will be among issues addressed at a sportsmanship summit February 20 in Dallas.
The summit will be staged by a group of organizations that includes Bowl Championship Series conference commissioners and NCAA Football, which consists of the American Football Coaches Association, the Collegiate Commissioners Association, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the NCAA.
The most recent football season was marred by several postgame on-field and on-campus incidents. Postgame incidents also have been common on campuses after Final Four games.

Twelfth game boosts I-A football attendance to record high
With Division I-A again leading the way, NCAA college football attracted more than 44 million spectators in 2002, the highest total attendance figure in history and an improvement of more than four million from last year.
Division I legislation allowed teams to play a 12th regular-season game in 2002, and many schools used the opportunity to set total attendance records. The 12-game season also will be in place in 2003 and in subsequent years in which there are 14 Saturdays from the first permissible playing date through the last playing date in November (2008, 2013, 2014 and 2019).
The jump of four million was the largest one-year leap since the NCAA Statistics Service began compiling national football attendance in 1948. The 617 NCAA teams totaled 44,556,215 fans for all four divisions, eclipsing the former record of 40,500,823 set in 2001.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Competitive-safeguards committee hears from division SAACs
The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards recently heard updates from the three Student-Athlete Advisory Committees on health and safety issues being examined at the divisional level.
Division I is addressing insurance-coverage concerns and advocating for more universal coverage. Division II is concerned with van safety issues, while Division III's recent focus has been on playing and practice seasons and safety implications.
The committee also discussed health and safety issues related to football. The group reviewed and supported the Division I football out-of-season conditioning model and the Division II preseason practice model, with minor modifications. The committee also recommended that Division III develop a football preseason practice model that incorporates the general acclimatization, medical resource and recovery criteria established by the committee, as well as remaining consistent with the health and safety aspects of the proposed Division I and Division II models.
