CONVENTION

Correction noted for Division III Official Notice

The Official Notice for the 98th annual NCAA Convention -- including proposed legislation for consideration during the Divisions II and III business sessions and schedules of meetings during the January 9-12 event -- has been mailed to chief executive officers, faculty athletics representatives, directors of athletics and senior woman administrators at active member institutions, as well as officers of member conferences and to provisional member institutions.

The Division III governance staff is calling attention to an error in Appendix B. The playing-and-practice-seasons model charts appearing on pages 161 through 163, as well as notes appearing on page 166, relate to a proposal that was considered last year and erroneously were reprinted from last year's Official Notice.

Correct information related to the Division III Presidents Council's playing-and-practice-seasons proposal for this year's Convention (2004 Convention Proposal No. 60) appears on pages 164 and 165 of the 2004 Official Notice.

BASKETBALL

Division I basketball committees begin site-selection process

The Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Committees soon will begin the process of selecting preliminary-round sites for upcoming championships.

The first step will be e-mailing specification agreements and facility-availability questionnaires to all Division I athletics directors and commissioners Wednesday, December 3.

The men's committee will select one opening-round site, eight first-/second-round sites and four regional sites for 2007 and 2008. The women's committee will choose eight first-/second-round sites for 2005 and 2006.

The deadline for prospective hosts to return the completed agreements and questionnaires is January 10, 2004. The committees will select finalists in February, then choose the sites in June. Minimum seating capacity for a men's session is 12,000. Minimum capacity to host a women's session is 8,000. An institution or conference must serve as host to each tournament session.

FOOTBALL

BCS, non-BCS conferences arrange for continued talk

Representatives from Division I-A conferences agreed November 16 to continue discussions about how to make Division
I-A football postseason play more equitable.

The group, which involved representatives from Bowl Championship Series conferences and those outside the BCS, announced it would ask the 11 Division I-A conference commissioners to select consultants of their choice and meet with them within 60 to 90 days to develop recommendations on how to guide the future direction of postseason football.
