Development programs

Applications for scholarship, internship programs online

NCAA postgraduate scholarships. Applications are available online for student-athletes participating in fall sports (www1.ncaa.org/membership/ed_outreach/prof_development/postgrad_scholarships.html). Nomination folders also were sent earlier this fall to member institutions' faculty athletics representatives. The application deadline is December 12, 2003. Applications for student-athletes participating in winter and spring sports will be available later this academic year. The scholarship amount has been increased to $7,500 this year. Student-athletes who have an overall undergraduate minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.200 and are participating in their final season of athletics competition are eligible.

NCAA Women's and Ethnic Minority Enhancement Program postgraduate scholarships. Applications also are available at www1.ncaa.org/membership/ed_outreach/prof_development/minority-womens_scholarships.html. Application folders also were mailed to athletics directors and senior woman administrators in September. Thirteen ethnic minorities and 13 women are selected to receive $6,000 postgraduate scholarships through the enhancement program each academic year. Three additional awards for both groups are awarded to representatives from Division III institutions. The scholarships are available for ethnic minorities and women who will be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies and are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in a sports-related field. The application deadline for these scholarships is December 19, 2003.

NCAA Women's and Ethnic Minority Enhancement Program internships. Applications are available at www1.ncaa.org/
membership/ed_outreach/prof_development/minority-womens_internship
.html. The internships are paid, 12-month positions at the NCAA national office that provide on-the-job learning for ethnic minority and female college graduates pursuing a career in athletics administration. Applications for these positions are due January 28, 2004.

Sports wagering

Faculty athletics representatives to assist with gambling survey

Faculty athletics representatives at NCAA member institutions have been sent a survey that will help the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct determine the scope and extent of sports wagering by student-athletes on campuses. The study will be the first of its kind to address the issue on a national scale.

The Faculty Athletic Representatives Association's executive committee endorsed participation in the study last spring. Faculty representatives were selected as the conduit for the survey based on their experience in administering the NCAA Study of Substance Abuse Habits of College Student-Athletes, a study compiled every four years. The National Study on Collegiate Sports Wagering will be conducted in a similar manner. FARs at member institutions are being asked to administer the study to student-athletes in two preselected sports by November 20.

Survey results will assist the sportsmanship and ethical conduct committee in developing successful strategies and programs that help student-athletes resist the pressure of the growing sports wagering problem.
