CONVENTION

Delegates gather in Anaheim for 97th annual Convention

The 97th annual NCAA Convention will be conducted January 11-13 in Anaheim, California.

New President Myles Brand will deliver his first state of the Association address as part of the opening business session January 12. Brand was selected in October to replace Cedric W. Dempsey.

The Convention also will feature legislative sessions in Divisions II and III and the annual Honors Dinner, during which former Olympian Donna de Varona will be presented with the Theodore Roosevelt Award, the NCAA's highest honor.

The January 13 Division I forum will focus on a discussion of the NCAA Convention and the Division I legislative process. Other topics for the Division I forum include the incentives/disincentives package in Division I academic-reform efforts and a report from a subcommittee charged with examining Division I championship bracket formats.

TITLE IX

Federal commission's report now due in late February

The Secretary's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics cannot meet its deadline for a final report to the secretary of education and has moved its timetable back about one month.

A January 8 meeting of the commission was postponed, and the January 31 report deadline has been moved to late February.

William Hansen, a deputy secretary of education, told USA Today that such delays are "very common." Another spokesperson said the decision was made because of "the complexity and importance of the issue" and "the volume of material that has to be reviewed."

The commission was named in June to study Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination at institutions receiving federal funds.

The meeting previously scheduled for January 8 now will take place around January 25.

PLAYING RULES

Softball Rules Committee modifies banned-bat procedure

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee has made further changes to the banned-bat protest procedure to be used during the 2003 season.

The Softball Rules Committee will conduct a telephone conference at 8 p.m. Eastern time January 15 to assist those who have questions about the procedure.

ALCOHOL EDUCATION

February deadline nears to apply for CHOICES grants

Institutions interested in developing programming that emphasizes alcohol education and awareness have an opportunity to receive funding assistance from the NCAA through the CHOICES grant program.

The program has been in place since 1991. More than $2 million in grants have been awarded during that time. Applications for the 2003 program were mailed to member institutions in October. The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2003 awards is February 15.
