Division I men's basketball attendance topped the 25 million mark for the first time in 2002-03 while women's basketball attendance reached a record level for the 19th consecutive year.
The Division I mark eclipsed a record set last year as 25,001,678 fans passed through the turnstiles. For all three divisions combined, the total of 30,124,304 also broke last year's record.
As for women's attendance, the three divisions surpassed the 10 million mark for the first time. A total of 10,163,629 spectators attended NCAA women's games in 2002-03, an increase of 630,848 from the previous year. The 322 Division I teams fueled the boost by eclipsing the seven million mark for the first time, totaling 7,351,634 spectators, up 413,821.

The NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Rules Committees have voted to push back the recommended start date for their proposals for new court markings to the 2004-05 season.
The recommendations are for the men's game to use the international three-point line and trapezoid free-throw/three-second lane and the women's game to use the international three-point line only.
The women's game will use the trapezoid lane as an experimental rule in certified contests in 2003-04. The women's experiment will not include the international three-point line since it already is a rules recommendation.
The original recommended start date for the changes was the 2003-04 season.

A lawsuit brought by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and other athletics organizations against the U.S. Department of Education challenging the regulations governing Title IX was dismissed June 11.
The plaintiffs have 60 days to appeal the decision, which they plan to do.
"The fight is far from over," said Mike Moyer, NWCA executive director. "We're committed to seeing this through and abolishing the quota system once and for all."
