Rutgers-Newark appoints head soccer coach

Dick Gould, head men's tennis coach at Stanford for 37 seasons, has announced plans to retire from coaching at the end of the 2003-04 season. Gould will continue with the school as director of tennis.

During his tenure, Gould has led the Cardinal to 17 NCAA national championships. He also has produced 10 NCAA singles national champions and coached six NCAA doubles national championships. In addition, Gould has captured 14 Pacific-10 Conference team championships.

Since 2001, Gould has been first in Division I men's tennis all-time career victories. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named him coach of the decade for the 1980s and 1990s.

Stanford selected John Whitlinger, who has been with the program for 18 seasons, most recently as associate head coach, as Gould's successor, effective September 1, 2004.

GENERAL

Director of athletics

Jo-Ann Nester was promoted to director of athletics at San Diego. Nester, who replaces the retired Tom Iannacone, has been associate athletics director and senior woman administrator.

Senior woman administrator

Deana Ward was chosen as senior woman administrator and sports information director at Farmingdale. Ward served as a graduate assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach for two years at Springfield.

Associate directors of athletics

William Paterson chose Cindy Cohen as associate director of athletics. Since July 2000, Cohen has worked as associate athletics director at Rochester ... Tim Hall was named as associate athletics director at South Carolina-Aiken ... Bill Lynch was hired as associate athletics director for community relations at Ball State. Lynch formerly was head football coach at the school from 1995 to 2002. The school also promoted Ken Brown to associate athletics director for business services and elevated Pat Quinn to associate athletics director. Brown has been director of business services since 1991 and Quinn has been an athletics administrator with the school since 1995 ... Rutgers promoted Kate Hickey to associate athletics director for student services and compliance, Natalie Migliaro to associate athletics director, John Wooding to associate athletics director for communications and Joe Quinlan to deputy director of athletics. Hickey has been an assistant athletics director and will continue as senior woman administrator. Migliaro formerly was an assistant athletics director and Wooding most recently has been assistant athletics director for media relations. Quinlan was senior associate athletics director ... Dartmouth named Megan Drucker as senior associate director of athletics ... Richard Skeel was elevated to associate athletics director and Bernard Hill was promoted to associate athletics director for compliance at Stetson. Skeel and Hill have been with the school for four years ... Colorado State elevated Christine Susemihl to senior associate athletics director for internal operations, Gary Ozzello to senior associate athletics director for external operations and Doug Max to associate athletics director for operations and game management. Susemihl has been associate athletics director for compliance and most recently served as interim athletics director. Ozzello has been with the school's media relations department since 1978, and Max has been with the school's athletics department for more than 20 years ... Maine hired Blake James as senior associate athletics director. Since October 2002, James has worked as director of athletics development at Providence ... Steve Staples was elevated to associate athletics director for external relations, Sheri Norred was promoted to associate athletics director for compliance and Jeremy Gibson was elevated to associate athletics director for operations at Harvard ... San Diego promoted assistant athletics director Mike Matoso to associate athletics director for compliance and administration. Matoso has been with the school for five years.

Assistant directors of athletics

Campbell appointed Ed Pasque as assistant athletics director for compliance and academic services. Pasque, who replaces Tim Holt, has been assistant compliance officer and assistant CHAMPS/
Life Skills coordinator at West Florida for the past year ... Ryan Bamford, Greg Brinn, Erin Carey and Tracee Passeggi were announced as assistant athletics directors at Yale ... South Carolina-Aiken tabbed Angie Osbon and Brad Fields as assistant athletics directors ... Meghan Sweeney was named as assistant athletics director for compliance and student services at Robert Morris. For the past year, Sweeney has been with the student academic services department at Indiana State ... Maine chose Brent Williamson as assistant athletics director for public relations and promoted Sue Randall to assistant athletics director for business. Williamson has been media relations director for the NFL's Houston Texans and Randall has been athletics business manager since 1995 ... Marcie Reynolds was hired as an assistant athletics director at Colorado State-Pueblo ... Mount St. Vincent named Joseph DeBenedictis as an assistant athletics director and sports information director. DeBenedictis is a May 2003 graduate of the College of New Jersey, where he served as a student assistant in the sports information office.

Coaches

Baseball -- Lee Saverio was hired as head coach at La Salle ... Aaron Carroll resigned as head coach at Tennessee Tech.

Baseball assistants -- Jim Gemler was named as an assistant coach at Penn State-Behrend ... Texas-San Antonio elevated Jason Marshall to associate head coach. For the past three seasons, Marshall has served as an assistant with the program ... Michael Lake was appointed as an assistant at La Salle ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg chose Matt McMunn as an assistant coach ... Chris Podeszwa was announced as an assistant coach at Connecticut.

Men's basketball -- Waynesburg's Rudy Marisa retired as head coach. Marisa has guided the program since 1969 and will continue as director of athletics at the school, a position he has held for 21 years. The school selected Frank Ferraro, an assistant with the program since 2001, as interim head coach for the 2003-04 season.

Men's basketball assistants -- Duquesne hired Rodney Perry as coordinator of men's basketball operations. Perry, who replaces Ron Wuotila, has been an assistant coach at Southwest Baptist for the past year ... Jared Grasso assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Hartford ... James Madison chose Denny Hinson and John Marion as assistant coaches and selected Mike Blaine as men's basketball operations director ... Louis Twigg accepted duties as director of men's basketball operations at La Salle ... Utah announced Tom Abatemarco as an assistant coach. During the 2003 season, Abatemarco was an assistant with the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs and formerly was head men's coach at Sacramento State, Lamar and Drake. The school announced Michael Kane as director of men's basketball operations, succeeding Mike Schneider ... Todd Russ was named as an assistant at Nicholls State. Most recently, Russ has been coaching at the high-school level ... Minnesota chose James Ware as director of men's basketball operations. Ware, who has been program coordinator for the work study program at the school since 2001, replaces J.B. Bickerstaff ... Gravelle Craig and Travis Williams were added as assistant coaches at Chicago State ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg named Michael Keyes as an assistant coach ... Mark Macon was hired as an assistant coach at Temple. Macon played with the program from 1987 to 1991 and is the school's all-time leading scorer ... Terry Bartlet and Nathan Hale were awarded duties as assistant coaches at Lebanon Valley ... Guilford named Tim Kaine as an assistant coach ... Richard Stephens was hired as an assistant coach at Shepherd to replace Rich Lyons ... Saint John's (Minnesota) named Bruce Holmseth as an assistant coach to succeed Jerry Fogarty and also chose Zach McBroom as an assistant coach. Holmseth has been coaching at the high-school level. McBroom also serves as assistant offensive coach for the school's football team.

Women's basketball -- Elaine Gonya resigned as head coach at Carthage. Tim Bernero was appointed as interim head coach.

Women's basketball assistants -- Lehman hired Ivelisse Rosario as an assistant coach ... Martha Bragdon was hired as an assistant at Wellesley ... Penn State-Behrend chose Jennifer Petures as an assistant coach ... La Salle added Mimi Riley and Desiree Peterkin as assistants ... Dawn Buckner was hired as director of women's basketball operations and Michelle Edwards was chosen as coordinator of women's basketball operations at Rutgers. Buckner has been with the program as an assistant since August 1998 and Edwards, who formerly played professionally with the WNBA, spent the 2002-03 season as color analyst for the Rutgers Radio Network ... Stephen F. Austin hired Krissy Riggs as an assistant ... Keene State selected Kate Fillion as an assistant coach. Fillion has been a student assistant at Plymouth State ... John Thurston was named as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Wilmington ... North Carolina-Asheville added Adelle Harris and Makia Staves as assistant coaches ... Scotte Smith was hired as an assistant at Guilford ... Chicago State selected Gwen Burton and Ericka Haney as assistants. For the past year, Burton has been an assistant with the National Women's Basketball League's (NWBL) Grand Rapids Blizzards. Haney, a member of the 2001 NCAA championship team at Notre Dame, most recently completed a stint playing professionally in the NWBL.

Men's and women's cross country assistants -- Melody Fairchild was hired as an assistant women's assistant coach at Wellesley ... Penn State-Behrend named David Barwin as an assistant men's and women's coach.

Field hockey assistants -- Wellesley chose Lauren Scopaz as an assistant coach ... Molly McManus and Nicole Campbell were appointed as assistants at La Salle.

Football -- Savannah State named Richard Basil as interim head coach after releasing head coach Ken Pettiford. Basil has been with the program for eight years ... Arizona released head coach John Mackovic after three seasons. The school chose Mike Hankwitz, Arizona's defensive coordinator, as interim head coach.

Football assistants -- La Salle named John Gambone as defensive line coach, Jesse Gambone as inside linebackers coach, Larry Szabo as outside linebackers coach, Josh Zagorski as graduate assistant centers coach, Pat Hughes as student assistant defensive backs coach, Frank Vogt as student assistant quarterbacks coach and Adam Nigrelli as student assistant offensive line coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Tom Simmons was selected as head men's coach at Gannon.

Men's and women's golf assistants -- Maria Brooks assumed responsibilities as an assistant women's coach at Wellesley ... Michael Webb was chosen as an assistant men's coach at Alabama.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Dartmouth tabbed Rob Morgan as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Kristen Mullady was selected as head women's coach at Central Connecticut State.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- Texas named Amy Scott as an assistant women's coach. Scott, who takes over for Mark Davis, served as an academic mentor and rhetoric tutor at the school during the 2002-03 academic year.

Men's soccer -- Brian Wall was selected as head coach at Hood. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in 2004. Wall has spent the past two seasons as head boys' coach at Damascus (Maryland) High School.

Women's soccer -- Paul Royal was hired as head coach at La Salle.

Women's soccer assistants -- Wellesley appointed Andre Pelletier as an assistant coach ... Michael Madigan was tabbed as an assistant at Penn State-Behrend ... La Salle named Dan Mannella as an assistant ... Massachusetts-Dartmouth hired Paul Texeira as an assistant coach. Texeira spent the 2001-02 season as head girls' soccer coach at Westport (Massachusetts) High School.

Softball -- Jen Goodwin was named as interim head coach at Dartmouth ... Todd McEvoy was chosen as head softball coach and sports information director at Meredith. McEvoy has been sports information director at Teikyo-Post.

Softball assistants -- John Garris was selected as an assistant coach at Rutgers. Garris led the program at Henderson State from 2001 to 2003 ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg appointed Kristin Mehan as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Peter Metrinko was selected as men's and women's diving coach at Delaware. Metrinko, a fourth-grade teacher at Marbrook (Delaware) Elementary School, replaces John Schuster.

Men's and women's tennis -- Ed Colfer was named as head men's and women's coach at La Salle ... Pacific (Oregon) announced Gage Riddoch as interim head coach to succeed Monika Kowalewski ... Greg Rabidoux accepted responsibilities as head men's coach at Carroll. Formerly, Rabidoux has worked as an assistant at Milwaukee School of Engineering and Mount Mary College.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Philadelphia U. tabbed Jeff Marmon as associate head men's coach. Marmon will succeed current head men's coach Marty Gilbert in the spring of 2005 and Gilbert will continue as head women's coach. Marmon formerly was head men's and women's coach at La Salle and most recently has been coaching at the high-school level.

Men's and women's track and field -- Kenneth Giles was named as interim head men's coach at Norfolk State to succeed the late Floyd Conley. Giles, who also is head cross country coach, has been an assistant with the track and field program since 1999.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Lehman chose Maria Castro and Paulette Baldwin as assistant coaches ... Bryan Fetzer was named as an assistant track and field and cross country coach at Ball State. For the past four years, Fetzer has worked as director of track and field and cross country at Gardner-Webb ... Florida International announced J.J. Hunter as an assistant. For the past two years, Hunter has served as an assistant at College of New Jersey.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Chad Davis resigned as head men's and women's coach at Mount Olive ... La Salle hired Dave Stever as head coach ... Ellen Drewes-Stoen resigned as head coach at Luther, effective at the end of the 2003 season. Drewes-Stoen has guided the program for 25 years.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Penn State-Behrend named Phil Pisano as an assistant coach ... Kelly Daniel assumed assistant coaching duties at La Salle ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg added Erin Arnold as an assistant women's coach ... NYCCT selected Barbara Czelej as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's water polo -- Marc Hunt, an assistant men's water polo coach at UC Irvine for the past three years, was appointed as interim head women's coach. Hunt takes over for Dan Klatt, who currently is training with the U.S. National Men's Water Polo Team for the 2004 Olympics and will assume head coaching duties in the fall of 2004.

Staff

Academic services -- Ann England-Maxim was named as director of academic support services at Maine. England-Maxim has been director of the school's Academic and Career Exploration program since 2000. The school also announced Christina Guerrette Kerluke as interim athletics academic counselor to replace Meghan Doyle. Kerluke is a May 2003 graduate of the school.

Athletic trainer -- NYCCT chose Dwayne Brown as an athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Kerrie Eisenhauer and Ed Davis were appointed as assistant athletic trainers at La Salle ... Roger Williams appointed Kai Aboulian as part-time assistant athletic trainer ... Caroline Bone was named as an assistant athletic trainer at St. Mary's (Maryland). Bone has been a graduate athletic trainer at Smith for the past two years.

Assistant business manager -- La Salle tabbed Michael Jacobs as assistant business manager.

Communications -- Ball State promoted Chris Taylor to director of electronic media and game-day experience and elevated Kathy Muffenbier to director of athletics communications and marketing. Taylor has spent the past five years as an assistant director of athletics communications. Muffenbier has been with the athletics communications department for 13 years ... Chuck Sullivan was appointed as director of communications at Harvard. Since 1999, Sullivan has served as assistant athletics director for communications at Bryant.

Communications assistants -- Meaghann Schulte was chosen as assistant director of athletics communications and Marc Mullen was added as athletics communications assistant at La Salle.

Compliance -- Nathan Fry assumed responsibilities as director of compliance at Harvard. Most recently, Fry has been a compliance assistant with the Ivy Group.

Development -- Linda Stromberg was hired as director of the Skyjacks Foundation at Northern Arizona. Stromberg has been with the school for 10 years as assistant to the dean of the college of fine arts.

Marketing/promotions -- Duquesne appointed Ann Elder as coordinator of marketing and promotions. Most recently, Elder has worked as a media relations assistant with the NFL's Buffalo Bills for two seasons ... Beth Vechinski was named as marketing and promotions director at Northern Arizona. For the past two years, Vechinski has been assistant director ... Daniel Galvin was hired as manager of marketing and promotions at Santa Clara. Galvin succeeds Tom Bruya ... Maine chose Mike McCollum as director of corporate sales. Since 2001, McCollum has been manager of corporate marketing for the Fort Worth Brahmas hockey team.

Marketing/promotions assistant -- Julia Eberhart was named as athletics marketing assistant at Maine. Eberhart spent 2002-03 as an assistant manager of athletics media relations at the school.

Sports information -- Westminster (Missouri) announced Beth Usewicz as sports information director.

Sports information assistant -- Keith Cerroni was selected as a sports information assistant at Penn State-Behrend.

Ticket office -- Kent State hired Teri Kromrei as ticket manager. Kromrei, who replaces Gail Moseley, has been an assistant ticket manager at Detroit Mercy for five years.

Ticket office assistant -- Rob Richards was promoted to associate ticket manager at Ball State. Richards, who has been with the school for 10 years, was assistant ticket manager.

CONFERENCES AND ASSOCIATIONS

Conferences

The Southeastern Conference named C.M. Newton as a consultant to the commissioner for basketball. Newton formerly was director of athletics at Kentucky from 1989 to 2000 ... The Ohio Valley Conference appointed Donyale Canada as director of championships. Canada, who succeeds David Mines, has been an account executive for the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars for the past year and a half.

Associations

Missy Slay was hired as executive director of the 2005 NCAA Men's Final Four. Slay will serve as a citywide and operational planner for the event in conjunction with the St. Louis Organizing Committee.

DEATHS

Floyd Conley, head men's track and field coach at Norfolk State, died September 6 after complications from a heart attack. He was 58. Conley, who had been head coach since 1999, guided the program to one indoor and one outdoor Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.
