Andrassy fills Kent State wrestling post

Kent State has promoted Jim Andrassy to head wrestling coach. Andrassy succeeds the retired Frank Romano, effective October 1.

Andrassy has been a full-time assistant with the program since 1997. Before that appointment, he spent one year as a student assistant, one year as a volunteer assistant and a third year as a graduate assistant coach, all at Kent State.

Andrassy wrestled collegiately at Kent State from 1991 to 1994. He compiled a 106-25-1 career mark and currently is third in all-time victories at the school. During his junior season, he captured the Mid-American Conference championship at 158 pounds. He participated in the Division I Wrestling Championships his senior year.

Andrassy earned a bachelor's degree in rhetoric and communications in 1995 and a master's degree in sport management in 2002 at Kent State.

Johnson formerly was president at the school ... George F. Worcester Polytechnic President Edward Alton Parrish announced plans to retire at the end of the academic year.

Directors of athletics

Bob Nielson accepted additional responsibilities as director of athletics at Minnesota Duluth. Nielson also serves as head football coach at the school ... Baylor selected Ian McCaw as director of athletics. McCaw, who has been athletics director at Massachusetts, takes over for Tom Stanton ... Cindy Jacobelli was named as interim athletics director at Transylvania. Jacobelli, who succeeds the late Ron Whitson, has been head women's volleyball coach at the school for two seasons and has worked as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator for the past three years ... Don Vaughan was chosen as interim athletics director at Colgate ... Wyoming selected Gary Barta as director of athletics to replace Lee Moon. For the past seven years, Barta has worked as senior associate athletics director for external affairs and sports programs at Washington.

Senior woman administrators

Liz Cranmer Briggs was named as senior woman administrator at Susquehanna. Briggs enters her second season as head women's basketball coach and head women's golf coach ... Molloy named Karen Hern as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director.

Associate directors of athletics

Neal Eskin was named as associate director of athletics at Connecticut ... Princeton chose Michael Cross as senior associate athletics director for athletics programming and appointed Erin McDermott as associate athletics director ... John Martin was elevated to associate director of athletics for facilities and operations at San Diego. Martin has been with the school since 1975 ... Pennsylvania selected Andrew Bilello as associate athletics director for external affairs. Since 2001, Bilello has fulfilled similar duties at Towson ... Connie Richardson was elevated to associate athletics director at Otterbein. Richardson also will continue as head women's basketball coach at the school ... Lauri Mondschein was named as associate athletics director at Kutztown after serving in the position in an interim capacity during the 2002-03 school year ... Rochester selected Andrea Golden as associate director of athletics to replace Cindy Cohen. For the past seven years, Golden has been head women's lacrosse coach at the school ... Assistant directors of athletics

San Diego promoted Andrew Fee to assistant athletics director for facilities and operations and named Wendy McReynolds as assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions. Fee enters his second year with the school, while McReynolds has been director of sports marketing and promotions at Virginia Tech since 2001 ... Susquehanna awarded Frank Marcinek and Steve Briggs with additional responsibilities as assistant directors of athletics. Marcinek will continue as head men's basketball coach, a position he has held for 15 seasons. Briggs has been head football coach since 1990 and will retain head coaching duties ... Richard Retyi was hired as assistant athletics director for media relations at Jacksonville to replace Russell Reneau. In 2002-03, Retyi served as a sports information intern at Georgetown.

Coaches

Baseball -- Mike Hutcheon was announced as head coach at Air Force ... David Perchinsky was hired as head baseball coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Perchinsky, who takes over for John Vodenlich, most recently has been an assistant at South Dakota State.

Baseball assistants -- Southern Indiana tabbed Dave Sensenbrenner as an assistant coach ... Brian Tarajack was named as a volunteer assistant coach at Francis Marion. Tarajack served as an assistant coach at Garrett College (Maryland) in 2002-03 ... Saint Leo appointed Brady Bogart as an assistant coach ... Doug McCray, a 2003 graduate of Randolph-Macon and three-year starting pitcher on the baseball team, was hired as an assistant coach at the school ... Bucknell appointed R.J. Grant as an assistant coach. Grant succeed Rick Ciccione.

Men's basketball -- Brandeis announced Brian Meehan as head coach. Meehan, who replaces Chris Ford, was an assistant coach at Salem State from 1993 to 1996, when he assumed duties as head coach ... Mark Gottfried was awarded a five-year contract extension as head coach at Alabama. Gottfried has guided the program since 1998 ... Karl Henrikson was chosen as head coach at Southern Maine ... Wentworth Institute's Harry McShane resigned as head coach. McShane has led the program for eight seasons (1994-00; 2001-03). The school elevated Tom Devitt to head coach to succeed McShane. Devitt has been with the program since the 1999-00 season and has been associate head coach for the past two seasons ... Colorado's Ricardo Patton was awarded a three-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Patton has guided the program for eight seasons.

Men's basketball assistants -- DePaul selected Joe Tulley as director of basketball operations. Tulley was a member of the men's basketball squad at the school from 1999 to 2003 ... Allen Edwards was chosen as an assistant coach at Morehead State ... James Haggerty was named as an assistant at New York University ... Texas-San Antonio appointed Dionne Phelps as an assistant coach. Since 1999, Phelps has been an assistant at Texas State-San Marcos ... Cedric Smith was added as an assistant at Saint Leo ... Ahmad Dorsett was hired as a second assistant coach at Longwood. Dorsett has been an assistant boys' varsity coach at Forest Park (Virginia) High School since 2001 ... Valparaiso hired Rex Walters as an assistant. Walters, who competed professionally in the NBA for seven seasons, served as a graduate assistant coach at Emporia State last season ... Women's basketball --- Illinois extended the contract of head coach Theresa Grentz through the 2007-08 season. Grentz, who collected her 600th career victory last season, has been with the school since 1995 ... Donna Wise was awarded head coaching duties at Fredonia State ... Mount Ida hired Natalie Nakic as head coach ... Spencer Manning was announced as head coach at Rhode Island College. Manning, who replaces Mike Kelley, has been head women's basketball coach and head women's soccer coach at Anna Maria College.

Women's basketball assistants -- Victoria Best was tabbed as an assistant coach at Colgate ... Rhode Island named Nicole Chaszar as an assistant coach. For the past two seasons, Chaszar has been an assistant at Springfield ... Brown assistant coach Kathleen Cronin resigned ... Florida International added Laquanda Dawkins as an assistant coach and chose John Fair as director of basketball operations. Dawkins has been director of basketball operations for the women's basketball squad at Iowa for the past three years. Fair is a 2003 graduate of the school and most recently was team manager ... Le Moyne added Mary McKissack and Frank Netti as assistant coaches. McKissack is a 2003 graduate of Siena, where she was a member of the women's basketball team from 1999 to 2003. Netti has been coaching girls' basketball at the high-school level for 21 seasons ... Longwood appointed Kiera Manlove as a second assistant coach. Manlove is a 2003 graduate of West Chester, where she was a member of the women's basketball team for four years ... Bradley tabbed Andi Sutherland as a graduate assistant coach ... Mike McDevitt, Bianca Belcher and Jessica Libby were added as assistants at Southern Maine. The school also announced Jim Seavey as a volunteer assistant. McDevitt formerly was head coach at St. Joseph's (Maine) for 16 seasons. Belcher is a 2003 graduate of Colby, where she was a four-year member of the women's basketball team. Libby formerly competed on the women's basketball team at Southern Maine. Seavey will continue as head girls' basketball coach at Greeley (Maine) High School, a post he has held for three seasons ... Kristen Bodine was hired as an assistant coach at Emory. Bodine is a 2003 graduate of Indiana, where she was a member of the 2002 Big Ten Conference tournament championship team.

Women's bowling -- Wisconsin-Whitewater named Steven Michelfelder as head women's bowling coach and University Center recreation coordinator. Michelfelder has been a teacher and bowling coach at Franklin (Wisconsin) High School.

Men's and women's cross country -- Mariel Ettinger was tabbed as head men's and women's coach at Saint Leo ... Caroline Zajac Tynan was hired as head men's and women's cross country coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Marymount (Virginia). Tynan, who has run professionally for Nike Inc. and Adidas Inc., formerly has been an assistant at Brandeis and a graduate assistant at Villanova ... Saint Rose hired Andrew Rickert as head men's and women's coach. Rickert takes over for Mike Naylor.

Men's and women's cross country assistant -- Emory selected Sarah Byrd as an assistant coach. Byrd, a 2002 graduate of the school, captured the NCAA Division III national championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as a senior.

Field hockey -- Geneseo State promoted Shannon Raymond Manzo to interim head coach. Manzo, who replaces Elizabeth Monte, has been an assistant since the 2002 season ... Rutger Wiese was tabbed as head field hockey coach and head women's lacrosse coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania).

Football -- Ohio Northern named Stacey Hairston as interim head coach. Hairston has been an assistant coach with the program for seven seasons in addition to serving as head women's golf coach for the past two years.

Men's and women's golf -- Mercyhurst selected Dave Hewett as head men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Colgate chose Stan Moore as interim head men's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Wayne State (Michigan) appointed Grant Kimball and Mare MacDougall as assistant women's coaches. For the past two seasons, Kimball has served as top assistant women's coach at Lake Forest. MacDougall has been a member of the women's ice hockey squad at Mercyhurst for the past two seasons ... St. John's (Minnesota) named Jason Johnson and Chris Howe as assistant men's coaches. Johnson and Howe succeed Jeff Giesen ... John Marchetti was awarded responsibilities as an assistant women's ice hockey coach and assistant golf coach at Mercyhurst.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Jack McHerron assumed responsibilities as head women's coach at Siena ... Southern Maine selected Ben Raymond as head men's coach. Raymond, who has been head boys' lacrosse coach at Cape Elizabeth (Maine) High School for six years, succeeds Ken Tubbs ... Elizabeth Monte was hired as head women's coach at Rochester. Monte has been head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach at Geneseo State and takes over for Andrea Golden, who was promoted to associate athletics director at the school ... Greensboro selected Gregg Gebhard as head women's coach. Gebhard was head women's coach at Pfeiffer from 1998-02 and has most recently served as head coach of Team Charlotte, a high-school girls' lacrosse team for those without a high-school program ... Mount St. Vincent hired Danielle Argento and Kelly Sullivan as assistants. Argento has been head girls' coach at Malverne (New York) High School for four years and Sullivan is a 2003 graduate of Marist, where she was four-year starter and two-year captain for the women's lacrosse team.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Queens (North Carolina) chose Taylor Wray as an assistant men's coach ... Lael O'Shaughnessy and Sarah Queener were hired as assistants at William Smith. Last year, O'Shaughnessy coached the junior varsity and varsity lacrosse teams as well as the middle-school basketball and soccer squads at the Harpeth Hall (Tennessee) School. Queener was a four-year letter-winner on the women's lacrosse team at Yale ... Bobby Benson was hired as an assistant men's coach at UMBC ... Ron Chase was tabbed as an assistant men's coach at Hobart. Chase has been top assistant at Hamilton and replaces Jamie Breslin.

Men's and women's rowing -- Doug Thiemann was appointed as interim head women's coach at San Diego. Thiemann, who replaces Leeanne Crain, has been head men's coach at Loyola Marymount during the past year ... Santa Clara added Tony Barcia as head men's coach. Barcia, who replaced Jay Farwell, formerly was an assistant coach at the school.

Men's soccer assistants -- Dean Wortz was named as an assistant at Saint Leo ... Jon Atkinson was selected as an assistant at Longwood. Since 1999, Atkinson has worked as an assistant at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Women's soccer -- Transylvania's Scott Scanlon announced plans to step down as head coach after the 2003 season. Scanlon has been head coach since 2000.

Women's soccer assistants -- Laura LeDuc was appointed as an assistant coach at Emory. LeDuc has been head women's soccer coach and compliance coordinator at Agnes Scott ... Jimmy Riverso was hired as an assistant coach at Le Moyne. Riverso is a 2002 graduate of the school, where he was a four-year letter-winner for the men's soccer squad.

Softball assistants -- Saint Leo tabbed Aryn Rangel as an assistant coach ... Lafayette named Tara Minnich as an assistant coach ... Pennsylvania appointed Katie Spencer as an assistant coach ... Katie Lang was named as an assistant softball coach and assistant athletic trainer at Guilford.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Rick West resigned as head men's coach at Duquesne. The school gave Dave Sheets additional responsibilities as West's successor. Sheets also is head women's swimming coach at the school ... Brad Flood was selected as head women's coach at Bridgeport. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition during the 2004-05 season. Flood was head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Central Connecticut State from 1996 to 2002.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Nick Griffith was hired as an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon. Griffith is a 2003 graduate of the school, where he served as captain of the men's swimming team during his senior season ... California (Pennsylvania) chose Katie Bruzda as a graduate assistant coach. Bruzda is a 2003 graduate of Penn State, where she was a member of the 2001 Big Ten Conference championship team and a four-time all-American ... Northern Arizona appointed Brian Smith as an assistant coach. Smith has been head coach at Great Falls (Montana) High School as well as head coach for the Falls Aquatic Swim Team.

Men's and women's tennis -- Charlotte's Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods resigned as head women's coach ... Timothy O'Brien was chosen as head women's coach at Siena ... Michael Tebbutt was named as interim head coach at Northern Arizona. Tebbutt, a volunteer men's and women's assistant coach with the school last year, takes over for Steve Bickham ... Monika Kowalewski resigned as director of tennis at Pacific (Oregon).

Men's and women's tennis assistants -- Glen Hill assumed responsibilities as an assistant women's coach at Emory. Hill currently is ranked seventh in United States Tennis Association's men's open singles in the state of Georgia ... Bucknell added Michael Vann as an assistant men's and women's coach. Most recently, Vann has worked as a volunteer assistant at Birmingham-Southern.

Men's and women's track and field -- Aaron Fox was promoted to head men's coach at Texas-San Antonio. Fox spent two seasons as an assistant men's and women's coach at the school before serving as interim head coach in 2002 ... Wayne Stacy was hired as head men's and women's coach at Simpson to replace Tim Byers. For the past three years, Stacy has been head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at Defiance ... Darren Schneider, head men's coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater, accepted additional responsibilities as head women's coach to become track and field coordinator. Schneider succeeds Brian Borland.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Rider named Bob Hamer as an assistant track and field and cross country coach ... Ball State chose Brain McKay as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Maggie Deuel Loncz was promoted to interim head women's coach at Geneseo State to succeed Martha Martin. For the past five seasons, Loncz has worked as an assistant with the program ... Emory chose Lulu Sewell as an assistant coach. Sewell is a 2003 graduate of the school, where as a senior she earned first-team all-America recognition as a member of the volleyball squad.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Loizos Loizou was hired as an assistant coach at Guilford. Loizou formerly has been an assistant at North Carolina-Wilmington, Wake Forest and North Carolina-Greensboro ... Ray Bello and Jezel Rodriguez were added as assistant women's coaches at Hunter. Bello, a 2003 graduate of the school, was manager of the women's team in 2001 and 2002 as well as a two-year member of the men's volleyball squad. Rodriguez also was a 2003 graduate of the school, where as a senior member of the women's volleyball team she set national NCAA records for most service aces in a career (550) and in a season (193).

Staff

Administrative -- Princeton named Jon Kurian as athletics department assistant ... Chris Woodley was named as a graduate assistant at West Florida. Woodley has been news director for WEXC-FM/WGRP-AM in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

Athletic trainer -- Jason Schoonover was hired as athletic trainer at Manhattanville. Most recently, Schoonover has worked as head athletic trainer at Florida College.

Assistant athletic trainers -- San Diego added Wil Filamor as an assistant athletic trainer. Filamor most recently completed a one-year internship at UCLA ... Donna Robinson was selected as an assistant athletic trainer at Lake Superior State ... Bradley chose Kristin Pualoa as an athletic training intern. Pualoa has been an athletic trainer at Sports and Spinal Physical Therapy in Washington, D.C. ... Lorrell Partlon was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Molloy.

Development -- Padraic McMeel was named as director of athletics development at Wayne State (Michigan). McMeel fulfilled similar duties at Illinois State from 2000 to 2003 ... John Nitardy was appointed as senior director of athletics development with the Mountaineer Athletic Club at West Virginia, effective October 1. Since 1997, Nitardy has been associate athletics director for development at Massachusetts.

Event management -- Auburn named David Mines as director of athletics event operations and compliance. Most recently, Mines was director of championships at the Ohio Valley Conference.

Event management assistant -- Princeton hired Kristen Alexy as an event management assistant.

Sports information -- Virginia Commonwealth announced Phil Stanton as sports information director. For the past two years, Stanton has been working on CollegeBaseballInsider.com, a Web site devoted to Division I baseball ... Mount Olive hired David Shulimson as sports information director and compliance coordinator. For the past four years, Shulimson has been director of media relations and editor of the newspaper for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Sports information assistants -- Mark Wasik accepted duties as an assistant sports information director at UNLV ... David Rosenfeld was appointed as assistant director of athletics communications at Princeton ... Salisbury chose John Krueger as a sports information intern. Krueger formerly has been sports information director at Rockford and the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference.

Strength and conditioning -- Steve Lewis was awarded duties as strength and conditioning coach at Emory. For the past four years, Lewis has worked as strength and conditioning coach and fitness center instructor at Central (Iowa).

Conferences

The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced Kelly Gilligan as coordinator of championships. Gilligan has been an athletics administration assistant at Boston College. The league also announced the following as interns for the 2003-04 school year: Brooke Bestwick, Tim Howlett, Trevor MacDonald and Kristy McNeil ... Laronica Conway was named as an assistant commissioner at the Southeastern Conference. Since 1999, Conway has served as an assistant director of media relations at the NCAA national office ... The Northeast-10 Conference promoted Jonathan Harper to associate commissioner, Kenneth S. Belbin to assistant commissioner for media relations and Erin J. Guest to assistant commissioner for internal operations. Harper has been with the league since 1999 and has most recently been an assistant commissioner. Belbin has been director of media relations and Guest has spent the last year as assistant director of media relations and senior woman administrator. The league also announced Thomas R. Plough, president at Assumption, as chairman of the conference's President's Council and named George J. Hagerty, president at Franklin Pierce, as vice-chairman. Plough and Hagerty will serve two-year terms ... The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference hired Beth Dossantos as assistant commissioner for media relations. Dossantos, who replaces Chris Fitzpatrick, has been director of public relations for the Eastern College Athletic Conference ... The Mid-American Conference appointed Lori Montgomery as assistant commissioner for sports programs-women's basketball operations, Aimee Dupress Chambers as director of marketing and special events and Shonna Brown as director of compliance.

Associations

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced the following as newly appointed members of the board of directors: Bill Byrne, director of athletics at Texas A&M; Joe Castiglione, athletics director at Oklahoma; and Gene DeFilippo, director of athletics at Boston College ... Beth Bason was named as communications coordinator for U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Most recently, Bason has been a reporter for KKTV 11 News, a CBS affiliate in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

National office

Jennifer Strawley was promoted to associate director of student-athlete reinstatement at the national office ... James Bandy, Myra Fishback and Eric Baumgartner were named as assistant directors of membership services at the national office. Bandy has been assistant athletics director for compliance at Montana. Fishback most recently has been assistant director of compliance and championships at Conference USA and Baumgartner was an assistant athletics director at Clemson ... Leeland Zeller, assistant director of membership services at the national office, was promoted to associate director of membership services.

FONT SIZE=3>Name changes

Southwest Texas State University has officially changed its name to Texas State University-San Marcos.

DEATHS

John W. Bachman, formerly president at Wartburg, died July 7. Bachman was 87.

Former Illinois State President Samuel Edward Braden died August 13. Braden was 89.

Willa B. Player, formerly president at Bennett, died August 27 at the age of 94.

Former Mount Holyoke President David B. Truman died August 28. Truman, 90, also formerly was vice-president and provost at Columbia.

Tommy Campbell, a former men's basketball player at Bradley, died September 14. He was 59. Campbell competed at the school from 1963-66 before serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. He returned to the school for his senior season in 1969-70.
