Nocera promoted to head baseball coach

Westminster (Pennsylvania) has elevated Carmen Nocera to head baseball coach.

Nocera joined the program as an assistant coach in 1999. During the 2000 season, he worked as co-head coach of the squad. Since 2001, Nocera has fulfilled responsibilities as associate head coach.

Before accepting the post at Westminster, Nocera was head baseball coach at New Castle (Pennsylvania) High School from 1993 to 1999. He also served as a scout for MLB's Kansas City Royals and the Florida Marlins.

Nocera, currently the full-time dean of students and assistant principal at New Castle (Pennsylvania) High School, earned a master's degree at Kensington University and earned a doctorate at LaSalle.

Levinthal will retain responsibilities as head men's ice hockey coach at the school ... Mark Driscoll was hired as director of athletics at Colorado State. Driscoll, who was a color commentator for the school's football broadcasts on the Colorado State Sports Network last year, has been president of First National Bank of Colorado ... Baylor's Tom Stanton resigned after seven years as athletics director, effective immediately. The school announced David Brooks, vice-president for finance and administration, as interim athletics director ... Oswego State hired Timothy G. Hale as director of athletics. Hale worked as associate athletics director at Rochester from 1998 to 2000 ... Colorado State-Pueblo's Chris Gage resigned as athletics director. Gage has guided the athletics department since May 2002. The school chose Joe Folda, head men's basketball coach, as interim athletics director ... Jim Fuller was selected as director of athletics at Jacksonville State, replacing Tom Seitz. Fuller formerly completed tenures as assistant and as head football coach at the school.

Baseball assistants -- Chris Hayes was hired as an assistant and Les Wright was promoted to pitching coach at Jacksonville. Wright, who coached fielders last season, succeeds associate head coach Bob Shepherd ... Stetson appointed Jeremy Tyson as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. For the past four years, Tyson has fulfilled similar responsibilities at Southeast Missouri State ... Eric Filipek was awarded duties as an assistant coach at Western Carolina.

Men's basketball -- Hugh Durham, head coach at Jacksonville, signed a contract extension through the 2006-07 season. Durham enters his seventh season as head coach and also serves as athletics director at the school ... Dave Bliss, head coach at Baylor, resigned ... Missouri-St. Louis selected Chris Pilz as head coach ... Ricardo Patton, head coach at Colorado, agreed to a three-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Football -- DePauw head coach Nick Mourouzis announced plans to retire at the end of the 2003 season. Mourouzis, formerly an assistant at Ball State, Ohio, Indiana and Northwestern, has led the DePauw program since 1981 ... South Florida signed head coach Jim Leavitt to a two-year contract extension through the 2009 season.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Tammy Dixon resigned as head women's coach at Greensboro ... Plattsburgh State added Scott DeMonte as head men's coach to succeed John Combs. Since 1999, DeMonte has worked as head men's coach at UC Santa Barbara ... Nancy Billger was hired as head women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach at Wilkes. Men's soccer -- Norwich chose James Franklin as head men's soccer and tennis coach ... Andy Haynes was appointed as head coach at NYCCT to replace Stefan Charles-Pierre ... Ian Barker was named as co-head coach at Macalester. For the past four years, Barker has worked as top assistant coach and will share duties with John Leaney, who will continue as head women's soccer coach after overseeing both programs for the past 15 years ... Hilbert hired Kevin Mahoney as head coach to succeed Mike Rooney.

Men's soccer assistants -- Jeremy Kirchner was named as an assistant coach at Franklin & Marshall. Softball assistant -- Susan Scott was hired as an assistant at Loyola (Illinois). Scott was a four-year member of the school's squad from 2000 to 2003 and a two-time first team all-Horizon League selection.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Danielle Herring was appointed as head women's swimming coach and aquatics coordinator at Wells. Herring, an assistant coach at Wright State last season, replaces Michelle Moosbrugger.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Jocelyn Jay was appointed as an assistant women's swimming coach at Northwestern ... UC Irvine chose Brent Lorenzen as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Arkansas' Kevin Platt resigned as head women's coach ... Cincinnati awarded responsibilities as head women's coach Kimberley Jones ... Michael Morgan was appointed as head men's and women's coach at Colby. Since 2000, Morgan has worked as head men's coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps ... The school plans to participate at the club level next year before elevating the program to varsity status the following year. Lausier has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at College of New Jersey.

Wrestling assistant -- Glen Lanham was selected as an assistant coach at North Carolina.

Recreation -- Roger Williams chose Jim Cook as club sport director and promoted Mike Gallagher to intramural/recreation coordinator. The Southern Conference hired Jonathan Caskey and Andrew Christopherson as assistants for public affairs and championships. Caskey is a 2003 graduate of Furman and Christopherson is a 2003 graduate of Davidson ... The State University of New York Athletic Conference announced Chris Gondek as publicist for the 2003-04 year. Gondek has been assistant men's soccer coach and assistant sports information director at New Paltz State for the past two years.

Associations

Rick Covington, athletics media relations director at TCU for the past two years, was chosen as executive director of the Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic.

National office

Beth Rosenberg was named as an assistant director of The NCAA News. Most recently, Rosenberg has been a reporter for the Indianapolis bureau of the Associated Press.

Corrections

The name of a recently appointed assistant men's basketball coach at the University of New Hampshire was misspelled in the August 18 edition of The Record. Brent R. Cook succeeded Bill Cumplido after serving as an assistant at Bryant for the past three seasons.

Jacksonville State University was incorrectly identified as a football-playing member of the Southland Conference in the Division I notes section of the August 18 NCAA News. Jacksonville State became an all-sports member of the Ohio Valley Conference in July.

DEATHS

Albany State football student-athlete Jackie F. Blanding collapsed and died August 7. Blanding, 26, was a defensive lineman for the squad who had transferred from Middle Georgia College and formerly played one season at Virginia Union.

Minor Myers Jr., president at Illinois Wesleyan, died July 22. Myers was 60.

Robert D. Cross, former president at Hunter and Swarthmore, died May 31. Cross was 79.

Herb Brooks, former head men's ice hockey coach at Minnesota, died in an automobile accident August 11. He was 66. Brooks also served as head coach of the 1980 U.S. men's ice hockey gold medal Olympic team that upset the Soviet Union. At Minnesota, where he played collegiate hockey, Brooks led teams to three national championships during a tenure that spanned from 1972 to 1979. Brooks, a 1990 inductee in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, also led the NHL's New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins.
