Tennessee State names Allen as head coach

Tennessee State has selected Sharon Allen as head women's basketball coach.

For the past five years, Allen has served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Mississippi State.

Before joining the Mississippi State staff during the 1998-99 season, Allen worked for two years as a sports regional manager at Converse, Inc. She also completed a four-year stint as head coach at Saint Louis. Allen's career stops also include serving as recruiting coordinator at Kansas State and as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Drake.

Allen was a four-year letter-winner in basketball at East Tennessee State, where she earned a bachelor of science in physical education.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Douglas E. Zemke was named as president at Millikin. Zemke formerly was dean of the university's business school ... Yeshiva named Richard M. Joel as president to succeed Norman Lamm, who retired but will continue with the school as chancellor. Joel formerly was head of Hillel International, a college Jewish student association ... Cal State Bakersfield President Tomás A. Arciniega announced his retirement, effective July 1, 2004 ... Indiana (Pennsylvania) named Derek J. Hodgson as president. Hodgson has been vice-chancellor for academic affairs at Nebraska-Omaha ... Willis B. McLeod resigned as chancellor at Fayetteville State. McLeod will continue with the school as a member of the faculty after a one-year sabbatical.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Florida Atlantic appointed Craig Angelos as athletics director ... Muhlenberg named Sam Beidleman as athletics director to replace Steve Erber. Beidleman spent 35 years at the school as a coach and an administrator and has been serving as interim athletics director since April 1 ... Tom Iannacone, athletics director at San Diego, retired. Iannocone has been athletics director since September 1988 ... Keith D. Beckett was chosen as director of physical education, athletics and recreation at Wooster ... Ken Krsolovic was named as athletics director and head baseball coach at Lake Erie ... Peter Centola was hired as director of athletics at Newbury. For the past five years, Centola has worked as assistant athletics director and a part-time faculty member at Mount Ida ... Stony Brook named Jim Fiore as athletics director, effective August 13, replacing Richard Laskowski. Fiore, a member of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, has been senior associate athletics director at Princeton since 1999.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Longwood announced Molly Myers as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director. For the past year, Myers has been a compliance assistant at Cornell ... Stephanie Flamini was hired as senior woman administrator and head women's basketball coach at Guilford. For the past three seasons, Flamini has served as head women's basketball coach at Chowan.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Dave Rosselli was hired as associate director of athletics for development at Santa Clara. Rosselli has been director of development for the school of engineering at Pacific (California) ... UTEP promoted Mack Rhoades to executive senior associate athletics director and elevated Hank Humphreys to senior associate athletics director for internal operations. Rhoades was a senior associate athletics director and Humphreys has been associate athletics director for internal operations ... Dale Clayton was promoted to associate athletics director at Carson-Newman ... Arkansas promoted Derrick Gragg to senior associate athletics director. For the past three years, Gragg has been associate athletics director and director of compliance. The school also promoted Bill Gray to executive associate athletics director. Gray has been at the school for 20 years.

Indiana selected Marshall Goss as an assistant athletics director ... Michele Dubert was tabbed as an assistant athletics director for media relations at Niagara ... Kevin Trainor was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports information at Arkansas. Trainor has been with the school for eight years and has been sports informationdirector for the past three years ... Central Oklahoma named Terry Nelson as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions. Nelson has been a regional sales and marketing director with American Golf Corporation for the past seven years ... Joe Bednarsh was elevated to assistant athletics director at Yeshiva. Since 1999, Bednarsh has been assistant to the athletics director ... Middle Tennessee chose Mark Meadows as assistant athletics director for marketing and corporate sales.

COACHES

Baseball -- Rockford named Brian Nelson as head coach to succeed the retired Bill Langston. Nelson has been head coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point for the past four seasons. Pat Bloom was appointed as head coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point to succeed Nelson. Bloom, formerly an assistant with the program, has been an athletics department graduate assistant at Miami (Ohio) for the past year ... Joe Sarno was hired as head coach at Merrimack. Since 2000, Sarno has worked as an assistant at Springfield ... Willamette tabbed Matt Allison as head coach. Allison formerly has been an assistant at California, Georgetown, Cal Poly, Cornell and Cortland State ... Marlin Ikenberry was elevated to head coach at VMI. Ikenberry, who has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the past three seasons, replaces Tom Slater.

Men's basketball -- Dale Layer, head coach at Colorado State for the past three seasons, signed a five-year contract. Last season, Layer led the team to the Mountain West Conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA tournament ... Defiance head coach Tom Palombo resigned to accept head coaching duties at Guilford. In six seasons, Palombo guided the program to NCAA Division III tournament appearances in 1999 and 2001 ... Sherry Dobbs was named as head coach at Potsdam State to replace Bill Mitchell, who became an assistant athletics director at the school. Dobbs has been an assistant coach at Ithaca since 1998 ... Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery was awarded a contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Montgomery, head coach for the past 17 seasons, has led the school to nine straight NCAA tournament appearances and Pacific-10 Conference regular-season championships in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Men's basketball assistants -- Bob Semling was awarded duties as associate coach and director of basketball operations at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Semling, who replaces Ken Koelbl, served as director of basketball operations at New Mexico last season ... Barry Stevens was added as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois ... Florida International appointed Jesus Labrada and Michael Burden as assistant coaches and chose Courtney Young as administrative assistant ... Mitch Buonaguro and Adam Chaskin were appointed as assistants at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Saint Rose appointed Tim Perry as an assistant to replace Don Bassett, who retired. Perry has spent the past two years as an assistant coach at Johnson County (Kansas) Community College ... Doug Durham was appointed as an assistant coach at Georgia State. Durham has been an assistant at Jacksonville for six years ... Frank Burnell was appointed as an assistant coach at South Florida ... Don Doucette was hired as associate head coach at New Hampshire to replace Jim Woods. Most recently, Doucette has been director of athletics and head men's basketball coach at Newbury.

Women's basketball -- Indiana (Pennsylvania) head coach Sandy Thomas resigned. The school chose Justin English, an assistant with the program, as interim head coach ... Sharon Allen accepted responsibilities as head coach at Tennessee State. For the past five years, Allen has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Mississippi State ... Pacific (Oregon) appointed Jeff Thompson as interim head coach to succeed Nicole Scholl who was selected as head coach in June, but decided to continue at Binghamton. Thompson has been an assistant for the past two seasons ... Devonna Williams was named as head coach at Potsdam State to succeed Nelson Schorr. Williams has been head coach at Dickinson for four years ... Michigan Tech head coach Darla Olson resigned. In five seasons, Olson built a 111-37 mark and twice earned honors as Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coach of the year.

Women's basketball assistants -- Julia Huddleston was hired as an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth. During the 2002-03 season, Huddleston was a graduate assistant at Austin Peay State ... Appalachian State named Jeff Laboe as an assistant coach ... Merrimack elevated Kathy Karlsson to associate head coach. Karlsson has been top assistant and recruiting coordinator for four seasons ... High Point selected Shannon O'Brien as an assistant. O'Brien is a May graduate of the school, where she was a three-year letter-winner in basketball ... Thomas Spina was named as an assistant at Army ... Lenoir-Rhyne selected Stephanie Cross as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- New Jersey Institute of Technology hired Al Alonso as head men's and women's coach. For the past 19 years, Alonso has worked as head men's coach at Stevens Institute of Technology and also has spent the past six years as head men's and women's track and field coach at the school ... Adarian Barr was hired as head men's and women's cross country coach and head men's track and field coach at Fredonia State ... Keith Dieterle, an assistant cross country and track coach at Franklin & Marshall, was tabbed as head men's and women's cross country coach. Dieterle will continue as distance coach for the track and field program ... Hillsdale chose Penny Neer as head women's cross country and track and field coach. Neer competed in the discus during the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Field hockey -- Noelle Bowman resigned as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania).

Field hockey assistant -- Kelly Smith was added as an assistant at Keene State.

Football -- Jim Murphy was appointed as head coach at Merrimack to replace Gerry Sullivan. Murphy has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Bentley.

Football assistants -- Nebraska Wesleyan added Nelson Barnes as a defensive consultant, Jamie Makovicka as defensive ends assistant and Adam Petr as offensive line assistant ... Scott Frazier was hired as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator to replace Mark Speir at Elon ... Simpson named Clint Head as offensive line coach, Kevin Ferguson as linebackers coach and Andy Mitchel as offensive coordinator. Head, who has been with the program as a part-time assistant for the past two years, replaces Myles Easter. Head also will serve as strength and conditioning coach. Ferguson, who succeeds Jeremy Whalen, will assume additional responsibilities as assistant men's and women's track and field coach. Mitchel, who replaces Derek Wharton, was wide receivers coach at Wisconsin-Platteville from 2001 to 2002 ... Mercyhurst added Askari Adams and Eric Ridgely as assistant coaches ... Chad Huff was awarded duties as defensive line coach at North Alabama ... Tim Sensley was appointed as a restricted coach at McNeese State. Sensley, a former four-year letter-winner in football and all-Big West Conference cornerback at Louisiana-Lafayette, most recently has been in private business, as well as working as a teacher and coach at the middle-school level ... Brockport State tabbed Wade Boxleitner as defensive backs coach. ... Tennessee State added Randy Fuller as cornerbacks coach and Eric Mathies as defensive tackles coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Mark Engel was tabbed as interim head women's coach at Detroit Mercy. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2004 ... Nebraska Wesleyan appointed Stacy Smith as head women's coach to replace Rick Harley, who will continue with the school as head men's and women's tennis coach ... Lawrence awarded Dave Ruhly with additional responsibilities as head men's golf coach to take over for John Tharp, who will continue as head men's basketball coach and associate athletics director. Ruhly has served as associate head men's golf coach and will retain duties as head ice hockey coach, a position he has held since 1999 ... North Greenville named Jeffery Pittillo as head men's coach ... Jamie Green was selected as head men's coach at Charlotte to succeed Ben Hannan, who resigned. For the past four years, Green has worked as an assistant at North Carolina.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Rhode Island College named Bob Nannig as interim head women's coach. Nannig, who takes over for Nikki Pannone, was an assistant with the program during the 2002-03 season ... Illinois State tabbed Kristin Montero as head coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Thomas O'Malley was chosen as head women's coach at Sacred Heart ... Jim Plumer was named as head women's coach at Amherst to succeed Kay Cowperthwait, who will continue as senior woman administrator and assistant women's golf coach. Plumer has been an assistant coach at Bowdoin for the past three seasons.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Michigan Tech hired Ian Kallay as an assistant men's coach. Kallay has been general manager and head coach of the Drayton Valley Thunder of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Stacy Gaudette was selected as head women's lacrosse and field hockey coach at Mercyhurst.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Suzanne Eyler was selected as an assistant women's coach at Towson. Eyler was a May graduate of Loyola, where as a three-year starter and as team captain during her junior and senior years, she helped the team to three NCAA semifinal appearances in four years.

Men's soccer -- Austin tabbed Ryan Shea as head coach. Shea, who succeeds Duncan McMartin, has been an assistant at Memphis for four seasons.

Men's soccer assistants -- Stan Watson, director of intramurals and recreation at Yeshiva since 1986, was awarded additional responsibilities as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Patrick Farmer was named as head coach at Tennessee Tech to replace Greg Stone. Formerly head coach at Penn State and Ithaca, Stone has been coaching in the WUSA since 2000 ... Colby-Sawyer added Paul Stinson as head women's soccer coach and head women's lacrosse coach. For the past two years, Stinson has served as assistant women's soccer coach, assistant women's lacrosse coach and athletics department strength coach at Clarkson ... Francis Marion promoted Marty Beall to head coach, replacing current Francis Marion athletics director Murray Hartzler in that role. For the past four years, Beall has been an assistant coach at the school ... Taylor Haynes was elevated to head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan. Haynes, who takes over for Mike Brewer, has been an assistant with the program ... Bentley chose Lauren Lukis as head coach. Lukis, who replaces Lori Duran, has been an assistant coach at Brandeis for two years.

Softball -- Morehead State appointed Jill Karwoski as interim head coach for Jennifer VanSickle, who is taking a one-year leave of absence to complete requirements for a doctorate in sports administration. Karwoski has been an assistant for the past two years ... Williams hired Kris Herman as head coach to succeed Fran Vandermeer, who will retain head volleyball coaching duties and continue as an assistant softball coach. Herman has been head coach at Tufts for the last 16 seasons ... California Baptist named Mike Smith as head coach ... Sara Headley assumed responsibilities as head coach at Mercyhurst ... Dana Jenkins was named as head coach at Furman ... UC Riverside tabbed Connie Miner as head coach. For the past year, Miner has worked as associate head coach at North Carolina.

Softball assistant -- Erin Daniher was selected as an assistant at Buffalo (New York). Daniher was a graduate assistant at Ohio for two years.

Men's and women's squash -- Rochester named David G.D. Kay as head squash coach and assistant men's and women's tennis coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Eric Stefanski was named as interim head men's and women's coach at Rochester. Stefanski has worked as an assistant men's and women's coach at the school for the past year.

Men's and women's tennis -- Tory Plunkett was hired as head women's coach at Southwest Texas State. Plunkett, associate head coach at Texas-Arlington from 1996 to 1998, replaces Brenda Burgess ... Rick Harley was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Nebraska Wesleyan to succeed co-head coaches Kirk Cox and Sandy Hilsabeck ... Rocky Jarvis was awarded additional responsibilities as head women's coach at Brandeis. Jarvis takes over for Judy Houde, who retired after 30 years with the school, including serving as head women's tennis coach since 1974 and head women's basketball coach from 1973 to 1981. Jarvis has been head men's tennis coach since 1998 ... St. John's (New York) hired Gemma Alexander-Mozeak as head women's coach. Most recently, Alexander-Mozeak served as head women's coach at Fordham.

Men's and women's tennis assistants -- Jesse Medvene-Collins was appointed as an assistant women's coach at Dartmouth ... Minnesota named Luciano Battaglini as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Willie Randolph assumed responsibilities as head men's and women's coach at New Orleans ... Don Augustine was appointed as head men's and women's track and field coach and football defensive line coach at Westminster (Pennsylvania). Most recently, Augustine has been an assistant football coach at Temple ... Campbell appointed Jim Sprecher as head men's and women's coach. For the past four years, Sprecher has been head men's track and cross country coach at Ball State ... Missouri-Kansas City hired Theo Hamilton as head track and field and cross country coach. For the past two years, Hamilton has been head men's and women's track coach at Benedictine College ... Curtis Collier assumed responsibilities as head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at Sam Houston State.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Yale selected Erin Appleman as head women's coach. Appleman has been an assistant at Penn State for eight years ... Matora Fiorey was promoted to head women's coach at Keene State after working as an assistant coach for the past two seasons. Fiorey replaces Scott Price, who resigned after four years as head coach ... Pace tabbed Casie Alexander as head women's coach ... Hood appointed Judith Whims as head coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Johan Dulfer and Kerri-Ann Grosso were added as assistant women's coaches at James Madison ... Lamar hired April Harriman as an assistant women's coach. Harriman spent one year as a volunteer assistant and one year as a full-time assistant coach at Ohio ... Delaware appointed Stacy Barnett as a graduate assistant women's coach. Barnett, who replaces Sara Pohl, is a 2001 graduate of New Hampshire, where she became the school's all-time leader in assists (3,977) as a setter with the volleyball team ... Jennifer Hampton was chosen as an assistant coach at Davidson.

STAFF

Academic services -- Kim Cochrane was hired as an academic counselor at Texas-Pan American, effective September 1. Cochrane has been an academic counselor at Springfield and succeeds Dawne Hill, who was named as coordinator of student development at the school ... Todd Kulka was named as coordinator of football academic support services and Wally Richardson was selected as an academic counselor for football at Penn State. Kulka, who replaces the retired Don Ferrell, has been with Penn State's Morgan Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes for three years. Richardson formerly was a football starting quarterback at the school and went on to play professionally in the NFL and XFL.

Athletic trainer -- Worcester Polytechnic's Dave Abraham resigned as head trainer to become an assistant trainer with MLB's Toronto Blue Jays ... Sandy Morgrage was elevated to head athletic trainer at Bridgewater State, succeeding Gayle Olson, who resigned at the end of the 2002-03 academic year. Since the fall of 2001, Morgrage has been an assistant athletic trainer.

Business manager -- Sara Hill was named as athletics business manager at Wright State. Hill, who takes over for Heather Saunders, has been an accountant for the university's school of medicine for the past three years.

Communications director -- Cleveland State selected Brian McCann as director of athletics communications. McCann has been associate sports information director at Cincinnati since 1995.

Marketing/promotions assistant -- Ann Ronchetti was tabbed as assistant director of marketing at Syracuse. For the past year, Ronchetti has served as a marketing/development assistant at New Mexico.

Media relations assistants -- Michael Bertsch was chosen as assistant media relations director and Jeremy Hoffman was appointed as a media relations intern at Winston-Salem ... Brian Blank was tabbed as assistant director of athletics media relations at UC Riverside. Blank, who succeeds Lisa Brooks, has been with the San Jose State athletics media relations department for the past two years.

Sports information assistant -- Arkansas hired Stephanie Wetzel as an assistant sports information director. Wetzel has spent the past 16 months as an intern in the school's sports information department.

Ticket office assistant -- DePaul chose Jason Coomer as assistant director of ticket operations.

CONFERENCES

The California Collegiate Athletic Association chose Jennifer Fraser as coordinator of compliance and senior woman administrator. Fraser has been assistant sports information director at Cal State Bakersfield ... The Peach Belt Conference elected the following as officers: Thomas Hallman, South Carolina-Aiken, president; Thomas Harden, Clayton State, president-elect; Daniel Ball, Lander, vice-president. As immediate past president, Allen Meadors of North Carolina-Pembroke will continue as a member of the executive committee ... Bradley Taylor was hired as director of championships at the Colonial Athletic Association. Taylor most recently served one year as an intern in the championships group at the NCAA national office ... Michelle Jinks accepted responsibilities as director of media relations at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference ... Steve Shutt was promoted to associate commissioner for public affairs at the Southern Conference. Shutt has been with the league since 1999 and has served as assistant commissioner since 2001.

ASSOCIATIONS

Linda Poncin was named as a media relations assistant at the American Volleyball Coaches Association, effective August 4. Poncin has worked as an athletics communications graduate assistant at Minnesota State Mankato ... Amy Frankenstein resigned as executive director of USA Field Hockey. Frankenstein has led the organization since March 2001.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Jack Copeland was hired as assistant director of The NCAA News. Copeland formerly worked for the News from 1986 to 1998.

NAME CHANGES

The University of Southern Colorado officially changed its name to Colorado State University-Pueblo, effective July 1 ... Holy Family College has officially changed its name to Holy Family University, effective immediately.

NOTABLES

Rickie Weeks, a baseball student-athlete at Southern, was named as the winner of the Golden Spikes award, presented to the top amateur baseball player in the nation. Weeks, who was the second overall selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in this year's MLB draft, has earned NCAA batting titles in the past two seasons.

DEATHS

Former Alabama-Birmingham president S. Richardson Hill died July 4. Hill was 80.

W. Robert Parks, former president at Iowa State, died July 13 at the age of 87.

Grand Valley State football student-athlete Jordan Fields died in a traffic accident July 18. He was 21. Fields, a linebacker, lettered as a freshman in 2001 and red-shirted last season.

Justin Chapman, a basketball student-athlete at Wayne State (Michigan), drowned July 18. He was 22. Chapman, a forward, was a member of the team from 2001 to 2003, averaging 12.9 points and 6.9 rebounds.
