Loras selects Anderson as head softball coach

Loras has appointed Sarah Anderson as head softball coach and an instructor in the physical education department.

For the past seven years, Anderson has guided the program at NAIA-member St. Ambrose University. During her tenure there, Anderson compiled a 244-117 record, captured three Midwest Classic Conference championships and earned an NAIA national tournament berth in 2000. She also was named conference coach of the year in 1996 and 1999.

Anderson played softball collegiately for one season at Iowa in 1991 before transferring to St. Ambrose, where she competed in softball, basketball and soccer.

Anderson earned a bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose in 1994 and a master's degree in physical therapy, also from St. Ambrose, in 1997.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Francis T. Borkowski retired as chancellor at Appalachian State. Borkowski will continue with the school as a professor of music after a sabbatical ... Steffen H. Rogers announced plans to retire as president at Bucknell, effective June 2004 ... Nancy L. Zimpher was selected as president at Cincinnati, effective October 1. Zimpher has been chancellor at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Randolph-Macon named Jeff Burns as acting athletics director. Since 1997, Burns has worked as an assistant athletics director at the school and also has been head golf coach ... Janice Marie Edwards was named vice-president for student affairs and dean of students at Chatham. Edwards, who as part of her responsibilities will oversee the athletics department, has been associate vice-president for student affairs at Ohio ... St. Olaf chose Matt McDonald as athletics director.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Boston College hired Jody Mooradian as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director to succeed Lynn Holleran. Mooradian, chair of the NCAA Women's Rowing Committee, has been at Northeastern since 1997, most recently serving as senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... UTEP selected Lisa Campos-Emmert as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... Sheri Holt was appointed as senior woman administrator at Florida Southern. Since 1997, Holt has worked as compliance coordinator at North Florida.

FACULTY ATHLETICS
REPRESENTATIVE

Anne Preston was selected as faculty athletics representative at Haverford. Preston, who succeeds Alex Kitroeff, serves as an associate professor of economics at the school.

Franklin & Marshall chose Shawn Carty as associate athletics director. For the past three years, Carty has been at Pennsylvania, most recently working as associate director of athletics facilities ... Bobby Robinson was appointed as senior associate athletics director at Georgia Tech ... Tonia Walker was selected as associate athletics director at Winston-Salem State after serving as assistant athletics director, senior woman administrator and head women's volleyball coach at the school. Walker, who will relinquish head coaching duties, has been with the school since August 2000 ... John Garamendi Jr. was appointed executive associate athletics director for external affairs at California.

Winthrop promoted Jack Frost to assistant athletics director for media relations, Jeff Lahr to assistant athletics director for sports medicine and Susan Anfin to assistant athletics director for compliance and student services. Frost has been sports information director, Lahr was an athletic trainer and Anfin worked as compliance director and senior woman administrator ... Leslie Wurzberger accepted additional responsibilities as assistant athletics director at Washington. Since 1996, Wurzberger has been director of marketing and promotions ... Central Oklahoma named Terry Nelson assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions ... John Veneziano resigned as assistant athletics director for sports media relations at Harvard, effective August 22 ... Arkansas State selected Aaron Leetch as assistant athletics director for development.

Baseball -- Ed Servais was elevated to head coach at Creighton after most recently serving as an assistant coach ... Reed Peters, head coach at Air Force for the last four years, resigned to become head coach at Feather River College ... Marist head coach Jim Tyrrell resigned ... McNeese State promoted Chad Clement to head coach. Clement was top assistant coach for the last six seasons and has been interim head coach for the past month.

Baseball assistants -- Montevallo chose Jeremy Browning as an assistant coach ... Vassar appointed Jon Martin as an assistant coach ... Georgia Southern tabbed Brett Lewis as an assistant.

Men's basketball -- Cheyney named Cleo Hill Jr. as head coach. Hill was an assistant coach at Shaw from 2000 to 2002 ... Thomas Curle was hired as head coach at Plattsburgh State to replace Ed Jones. For the past year, Curle has served as head men's coach at Utica/Rome ... Becker tabbed Scott Dion as head coach ... Griff Mills resigned as head coach at Tusculum after guiding the program since 2001 ... Niagara awarded head coach Joe Mihalich with a seven-year contract extension through the 2009-10 season. Mihalich has led the program to two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season championships during his five-year tenure ... Gabe Duran was named as interim head coach at La Verne ... Jacksonville awarded head coach Hugh Durham with a one-year contract extension through the 2007 season. Durham, who also serves as director of athletics at the school, has guided the program for six seasons.

Men's basketball assistants -- Vanderbilt selected Tom Richardson as an assistant coach ... Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Brian Hagen resigned to become video coordinator with the NBA's New Orleans Hornets ... Tennessee Tech added Garrick Respress and Dexter Williams as assistants to replace Steve Cherry, who was named top assistant at George Washington, and G.G. Smith, who assumed duties at Hawaii. Respress has been a corporate recruiter and account executive for an Atlanta-based firm for the past year and Williams was an assistant at Birmingham Southern for two seasons. The school also appointed Jason Clark as director of basketball operations ... Reggie Theus was hired as an assistant at Louisville. Theus, who formerly played professionally in the NBA, succeeds Mick Cronin ... Appalachian State selected Darryl Robinson as an assistant coach ... Irv Ray was awarded responsibilities as head cross country and track and field coach at UC Riverside. Ray, who succeeds Chris Rinne, was head track and field and cross country coach at Christian Brothers from 1997 to 2002, when the school dropped the programs ... San Francisco named Helen Lehman-Winters as head men's and women's cross country coach and head women's track coach. For the past two seasons, Lehman-Winters has been an assistant women's cross country and track coach at UCLA ... Smith tabbed Ellen O'Neil as head women's coach to replace Carla Coffey, who will continue as head women's track and field coach. Since 1992, O'Neil has served as head cross country and assistant track coach at Dartmouth ... Washington and Lee chose Kris Hoey as head women's cross country coach and associate head track and field coach ... Caldwell appointed John Tosato as head women's coach ... Field hockey -- Wellesley tabbed Nicole Smith as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach. Smith has been head field hockey coach and head women's lacrosse coach at Bryn Mawr since 1999 ... Kelly Ford was elevated to interim head coach at Drew for the 2003 season. Ford takes over for Maureen Horan ... Nichols awarded head coaching responsibilities to Christy Deliberto to replace Charlie Robert, who will continue as athletics director and assistant field hockey at the school. Deliberto has been an assistant field hockey coach at Assumption since 1995 ... Ashley Hohnstine assumed responsibilities as head coach at Notre Dame (Maryland), replacing Susan Mackley. Hohnstine was a student assistant coach at Maryland in 2002 and worked as a volunteer assistant at Towson during the spring of 2003 ... Amy Endler accepted additional responsibilities as head field hockey coach at Moravian. Endler will continue as assistant women's basketball coach.

Field hockey assistants -- Rutgers added Brian Schledorn and Tara Bedard as assistants ... Albany (New York) appointed Tracy Barclay as an assistant coach.

Football -- Keith Gilbertson was promoted to head coach at Washington, succeeding Rick Neuheisel, who was released. Gilbertson has been offensive coordinator at the school for four years ... Charles Coe III was selected as interim head coach at Alabama State. Coe has been an assistant at Memphis for six seasons ... Duquesne awarded head coach Greg Gattuso a contract extension through the 2007 season. In 10 seasons, Gattuso has led the program to six Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles and has been named conference coach of the year five times ... Jack Cosgrove, head coach at Maine, signed a five-year contract extension.

Football assistants -- Washington tabbed Scott Pelluer as an assistant coach and Theron Aych as a graduate assistant defensive coach. The school also awarded quarterbacks coach John Pettas with additional duties as offensive coordinator and defensive line coach Randy Hart with additional duties as assistant head coach ... Minnesota-Crookston added Tim Driscoll as defensive and strength and conditioning coordinator. During the 2002 season, Driscoll worked as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Jamestown College ... Shepherd hired Nick Felus as quarterbacks and receivers coach and chose Shawn Rohrer as defensive line coach. Felus, who has been wide receivers coach at Bethany College, replaces Jack Ginn. Rohrer, who was inside linebackers coach at Slippery Rock for two seasons, succeeds John Pearce ... Josh Heupel, former quarterback for Oklahoma's 2000 national championship team, was named as a graduate assistant at the school ... Danilo Robinson was tabbed as an assistant coach at Louisiana-Monroe ... Minnesota State-Mankato chose Dave Voth as offensive line coach ... Wagner selected Ed Argast as an assistant ... Rob Linkhart replaced the retired Larry Baldridge as running backs coach at Wittenberg. Linkhart has spent the past two years as a volunteer assistant. Baldridge continues with the school as a part-time athletics equipment manager ... Graham Johnsen was named as special teams and wide receivers coach at Mansfield ... Western Carolina selected Rodney Redd as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Aaron Bracy resigned as head coach at Drexel ... Mars Hill chose Brian Gordner as head men's coach. Gordner has been a teaching pro since 1998 ... Brian Anger was named head men's coach at Becker ... Harry S. Stephenson was selected as director of golf at Transylvania. Stephenson has coached golf, baseball and basketball during a 50-year tenure with the school that includes working as director of athletics from 1951 to 1969. The school also announced Brian Lane as head men's coach and Mark Turner as head women's coach. Lane will continue as head men's basketball coach and Turner, who is on administrative leave for part of the 2003-04 year, will retain duties as head women's basketball coach. Kelley Anderson and Cindy Jacobelli will serve as interim head women's coaches until Turner's return. Anderson is head softball coach and Jacobelli is head volleyball coach, associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... Hobart selected Bill Quinn as head men's coach to succeed the retired Bob Maher ... Trelle Kite was named as head women's coach at Augusta State ... Men's and women's ice hockey -- Nathan Leaman was appointed head men's coach at Union (New York) ... Wayne State (Michigan) hired Jim Fetter as head women's coach. Fetter formerly has been an assistant at Mercyhurst and Maine.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Plattsburgh State added Allison Coomey as an assistant women's coach. In 2002-03, Coomey served as an assistant at Connecticut.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Brian Anken accepted duties as head men's coach at Mars Hill. Anken has spent the past year as head assistant men's coach at Rochester Institute of Technology ... Plymouth State's John Pynchon resigned as head men's coach ... Jen Larsen was hired as head women's coach at Oregon. The school is scheduled to begin varsity competition during the 2004-05 season. For the past three seasons, Larson has been an assistant at North Carolina ... Larissa Gillespie was elevated to head women's coach at Widener. Gillespie, who replaces Nikki Porrecca, will retain responsibilities as head field hockey coach ... Brian Rhoads was appointed interim head men's coach at Vassar to replace Dick Sipperly, who is on sabbatical. Rhoads served as an assistant with the program last season ... Roanoke tabbed Tammy Dixon as head women's coach ... Tim Florence was hired as head coach at Wheeling Jesuit. Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Norm Riker, head women's soccer coach at Wittenberg, was awarded additional duties as assistant men's lacrosse coach.

Women's rowing -- Kansas State hired Patrick Sweeney as head coach. For the past year, Sweeney has served as associate men's varsity coach at Stanford ... Delaware appointed Laura Slice as head coach to replace Amanda Kukla. For the past three seasons, Slice has served as a graduate assistant coach at Clemson ... Rudy Wieler accepted duties as head women's coach at Buffalo (New York). Wieler takes over for Meg Barnes, who has guided the program for the past four seasons ... San Diego State promoted Jennifer Zebroski to head coach. Zebroski was an assistant with the program from August 2002 to May 2003 and has been interim head coach since June.

Women's rowing assistants -- Sarah Vieira was appointed as an assistant coach at Buffalo. Vieira was a volunteer assistant with the program during 2002-03 ... William Smith hired Katie Gill as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's skiing -- Ethan Townsend was named head Nordic coach at St. Lawrence ... Gordie Megroz was named head men's and women's coach at Boston College.

Men's soccer -- Newberry added Joel Harrison as head coach. Harrison spent last season as an assistant coach and director of youth development for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, a professional soccer team in the United Soccer League ... Mike Seabolt was tabbed as interim head coach at West Virginia. Seabolt, a former assistant with the program, succeeds Keith Fulk ... NYCCT chose Andy Haynes as head coach.

Men's soccer assistants -- Orce Kozeski was selected as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson ... Tony Mohammed was appointed as an assistant coach at Vassar ... Maine tabbed Peter Rivard as an assistant coach. Rivard, who was an assistant at Maine in 2000 and 2001, has been a graduate assistant women's coach at North Dakota ... Tomasz Stefanowski was hired as an assistant coach at New York University ... Wittenberg selected Kris Hazzard as an assistant. Hazzard succeeds the retired Chuck Nickoson ... Brad Ruzzo was elevated to associate head coach at Bradley. Ruzzo has been with the program since 2000.

Women's soccer -- North Carolina Wesleyan named Tory Martin as head coach to replace Kelly Walters. Martin was head coach at Martin Methodist College for three years and formerly was an assistant at Middle Tennessee State for two years ... Erin DeMarco was named as interim head coach at Vassar to succeed Dick Sipperly, who is on sabbatical. DeMarco was an assistant women's soccer coach and an assistant men's lacrosse coach last season ... Hamline appointed Tony Englund as head coach ... New York University selected Amanda Vandervort as head coach. Vandervort has been a graduate assistant women's coach/goalkeepers coach at the College of New Jersey for the past two seasons ... Timothy Moody assumed responsibilities as head coach at Keuka ... Knox appointed Jim Carothers as head coach.

Women's soccer assistants -- Saint Louis chose Kelly Young as an assistant coach ... Derek Reid was named as a graduate assistant at Morehead State ... Carrie Kveton was added as an assistant coach at Pfeiffer ... South Carolina-Spartanburg chose Liz Stojetz as an assistant ... Jocelyn Cavalier was named as an assistant men's and women's coach at Wartburg. Cavalier is a 2003 graduate of Purdue, where she was a member of the women's soccer squad ... Albany (New York) tabbed Winnie Corrigan as an assistant coach ... Tusculum added Brian Diaz and Jennie Murphy as assistant coaches. Diaz has been an assistant at East Tennessee State. Murphy is a recent graduate of the school, where she was a member of three South Atlantic Conference championship teams.

Softball -- Harry Blood resigned as head coach at Plymouth State ... Delaware Valley chose Richard Matarese as head coach ... Sarah Anderson was hired as head coach at Loras. For the past seven years, Anderson has been head coach at St. Ambrose University ... Greensboro's Ben Guiliano resigned as head coach to become director of the school's Royce Reynolds Family Student Life Center. Guiliano has guided the softball program since 1998 in addition to being named as supervisor of athletics operations last year ... Cheryl Milligan was appointed interim head coach at Tufts to succeed Kris Herman. Milligan has been an assistant coach at the school for six seasons ... Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Fredonia State appointed Arthur Wang as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach and director of aquatics ... Rebecca Mitchell was named interim head men's and women's coach at Drew to replace Maggie Bintz, who resigned. Micthell has been an assistant with the program ... Davidson named Timothy Kelly as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach ... Jeffrey Stewart was selected as head coach at Wheeling Jesuit. Most recently, Stewart has been coaching a competitive youth swim team ... Alabama selected Eric McIlquham as head men's and women's coach ... Case Western Reserve's Todd Clark resigned as head men's and women's swimming coach ... Lee Stauffer was named as head men's and women's coach at Florida Southern. The school is set to begin competition during the 2003-04 school year. Stauffer has been guiding the school's club teams since they were established in 1999.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Sharon Krueger was appointed as an assistant coach at Virginia. For the past three years, Krueger has been assistant head coach at Georgia Tech.

Men's and women's tennis -- Owen Hambrook assumed responsibilities as interim head men's coach at UNLV ... Becker hired Thomas Cooley as head men's coach ... Randolph-Macon chose Jamal Brunt as head men's tennis coach and assistant men's basketball coach. Brunt is a 2003 graduate of the school, where he was a four-year starter and two-year captain on the men's basketball team ... Steve Rodecap was named head men's coach to replace David Staniford at Marquette. Rodecap has been head coach at Northern Illinois for four years ... West Virginia State tabbed John Simms as head men's and women's coach to take over for Sean McAndrews ... Boston College chose Scott Wilkins as head men's coach ... Men's and women's track and field -- Stanford elevated Edrick Floreal to head women's track and field coach, and promoted Robert Weir to head men's track and field coach ... Tim Langford was tabbed as head men's track coach at Charleston Southern ... North Carolina-Wilmington head coach Kevin Ankrom resigned ... Trent Huntsinger was named head track and field and cross country coach at Wheeling Jesuit to replace Mark Swiger. Huntsinger has been an assistant at Idaho since 1999.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Loreena Anderson was hired as an assistant women's coach at Wisconsin ... Development -- Santa Clara selected Fred Smith as director of fund-raising and annual events. Smith formerly was an assistant athletics director for advancement at Cal Poly.

Marketing/promotions -- Charlie Voelker was selected as interim director of marketing, corporate sales and ticket operations at Albany (New York), succeeding Kevin Frattura ... Lenny Mathis accepted responsibilities as director of marketing and promotions at Wofford.

Marketing/promotions assistant -- Syracuse named Raymond Schultz Jr. as a marketing intern.

Recreation -- Becky Hall assumed additional responsibilities as director of intramurals and recreation at Wittenberg. Hall has been head softball coach and assistant field hockey coach for the past three years, but will relinquish field hockey duties.

Sports information -- Lipscomb hired Mark McGee as director of media relations for athletics. For the past 20 years, McGee has worked as a sportswriter and editor.

Sports information assistants -- Mulhenberg hired Casey Hart as an assistant sports information director. Hart is a 2003 graduate of North Carolina ... Lauren Cooper was selected as assistant sports information director at Longwood. During the past year, Cooper has served as a media relations assistant at Wake Forest ... Army hired Adrienne Gonzales as assistant director of media relations. For the past two years, Gonzales has worked as sports information director at Manhattan ... Mark Kimmel was named assistant sports information director at Saint Rose. Kimmel has been a media relations intern at Delaware during the past school year ... The Southland Conference named Tina Cheatham as associate commissioner and Jack Key as director of business operations. Cheatham has been associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Texas A&M since 2000. Key has been with athletics departments at Kansas State, Oklahoma and North Texas ... Tim Andrzejewski was hired as assistant sports information director at the Gulf South Conference. Andrzejewski has been a media relations intern with the Southeastern Conference ... Zak Ivkovic was promoted to interim executive director at the City University of New York Athletic Conference. Ivkovic, who succeeds the retired Ted Hurwitz, has been with the league since 1990 and most recently has served as associate director of the conference ... The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference named Millsaps President Frances Lucas as chair of the conference presidents for the 2003-04 academic year. CORRECTIONS

A caption in the July 7 NCAA News incorrectly stated that Wheaton College (Massachusetts) was the first school in the state to host the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event. Springfield College hosted the event in 1992.

Saint Mary's College (Indiana) was omitted from a list of Division III women's swimming and diving teams recognized for academic achievement in the August 4 NCAA News. Saint Mary's team members compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.395.

NOTABLES

Ron Stratten, vice-president for education services at the NCAA, was appointed to the board of trustees for the Fielding Graduate Institute, an accredited, nonprofit graduate institute for adult professionals.

Larry Munson, announcer at Georgia, was named as the 2003 Chris Schenkel Award winner. The honor, given annually to a college football broadcaster who has excelled in the field and contributed to the community, is presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Munson enters his 38th season calling Georgia football games and is in his 54th year of announcing Southeastern Conference athletics.

DEATHS

Don McLaughlin, athletics coordinator at San Francisco from 1990 to 1991, died July 28. In addition to serving as athletics coordinator, McLaughlin assisted with athletics publicity and with the Green and Gold Club and wrote for several of the school's publications.

Bonnie Ethel Cone, former president at North Carolina-Charlotte, died March 7. Cone, 95, also served as vice-chancellor for student affairs and community relations at the school.

Franklin M. Loew, president at Becker, died April 22. Loew was 63.

Norman P. Auburn, president emeritus at Akron, died July 21 at the age of 98.

Former NCAA General Counsel George H. Gangwere Jr. died June 13. He was 85. Gangwere served the Association from 1971 to 1987, supervising litigation at the federal and state levels throughout the country.

Phil Tobias, a former men's soccer student-athlete at New Jersey City, died July 27. He was 22. Tobias was a four-year starter on the school's soccer squad before graduating in May 2003 with a degree in computer science.
