Guilford hires Burke to guide men's lacrosse

Guilford has named John Burke as head men's lacrosse coach. Burke replaces Randy Mercer, who resigned in May after 10 seasons as head coach.

Most recently, Burke has been a territory sales manager for SRI Sports, a synthetic turf/track system manufacturer, in addition to serving as the head men's club coach at UC Davis in 2002 and 2003. Before that, Burke spent three seasons as an assistant men's coach at Ohio Wesleyan, where he helped the team capture two North Coast Athletic Conference championships and make three NCAA Division III tournament appearances during his tenure. The former head boys' coach at Hilliard (Ohio) High School also guided the program at Greensboro from 1991 to 1995.

Burke competed on the men's lacrosse squad at Guilford for three seasons and earned honorable mention all-America recognition as a defenseman in 1988.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Oregon State named Edward John Ray as president, effective September 1. Ray has been executive vice-president, provost and professor of economics at Ohio State ... Delaware State named Allen Lee Sessoms as president. Sessoms formerly was president at Queens (New York) ... Norman Adrian Wiggins retired as president at Campbell. After a sabbatical, Wiggins will return to the school as chancellor ... Wesley H. Poling resigned as president at Kentucky Wesleyan, effective at the end of the 2003-04 academic year.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Neumann chose Charles Sack as athletics director ... Ted Paulauskas was hired as director of athletics at Assumption to succeed the retired Rita Castagna. Paulauskas formerly was athletics director at Saint Anselm for 25 years ... Arkansas awarded Frank Broyles a five-year contract as athletics director. Broyles has been athletics director at the school since 1973 ... Gene Bartow, former head men's basketball coach at UCLA and Alabama-Birmingham and current special advisor to the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, was named as interim athletics director at San Diego State. Bartow takes over for Rick Bay, who resigned ... Cabrini promoted Leslie Danehy, associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at the school for the past six years, to director of athletics. Danehy replaces John Dzik, who will become special assistant to the president for athletics advancement at Cabrini. Dzik will continue as head men's basketball coach ... Kelly Higgins, director of athletics at South Dakota, resigned but will continue at the school as special assistant to the vice-president for an interim period. The school announced Greg Redlin as interim athletics director. Redlin has most recently been vice-president for finance and administration at the school ... Roberta Page was appointed as director of athletics at Shippensburg, succeeding the retired James Pribula. Page, who joined the school as an associate athletics director in January 2000, has served as interim athletics director since December 2001 ... Bob Fortosis was hired as director of athletics at Eckerd. Fortosis most recently has been at Cornerstone University.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Wheaton (Illinois) named Julie (Schmela) Davis as senior woman administrator and internal operations coordinator. Davis has been a coach and teacher with a public school district in Illinois ... Maine appointed Terry Kix as senior woman administrator. Kix will continue as head field hockey coach, a position she has held since 1991.

FACULTY ATHLETICS
REPRESENTATIVE

George Meese was selected as faculty athletics representative at Eckerd. Since February 2002, Meese has been acting athletics director at the school.

North Carolina-Asheville named Mark Wharton as associate athletics director for development and marketing to replace Pat Bryant. For the past three years, Wharton has been director of athletics development at James Madison ... Jerry Johnson was promoted to women's athletics associate athletics director for marketing and administration at Texas. Johnson has been with the school for six years. The school also elevated Cathy McDonald, interim women's basketball operations director since October 2002, to associate athletics director for women's basketball operations. McDonald replaces Annette Smith-Knight, who relinquished director of basketball operations duties to become an executive assistant with the marketing/external services area ... Maine elevated Scott Hobbs to associate athletics director for compliance and internal relations. Hobbs has been assistant athletics director for compliance ... Mark Livingston was selected as associate athletics director for marketing at Sacramento State. Since 2001, Livingston has been director of marketing at Hawaii.

Philadelphia U. promoted Brad Koch to assistant athletics director. Koch has been coordinator of intramurals and facilities since August 1998 ... Pace promoted Brian Mundy to assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions. Since 1999, Mundy has worked as sports information director at the school.

Baseball -- TCU's Lance Brown announced retirement plans after 17 years as head coach ... Steve Rodriguez was chosen as head coach at Pepperdine ... Steven Carcarey was tabbed as head coach at Widener to succeed Sean Matkowski, who resigned after seven years. Since 1998, Carcarey has been head varsity coach at Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic (Pennsylvania) High School ... Dennis Womack, head coach at Virginia, retired and assumed duties as an assistant athletics director at the school. Womack guided the program for 23 years ... John Cohen was hired as head coach at Kentucky. Cohen, who takes over for the retired Keith Madison, has been an assistant at Florida ... Oklahoma State chose Frank Anderson, pitching coach at Texas since 2000, as head coach. Anderson succeeds Tom Holliday.

Baseball assistants -- Frostburg State selected Jimmy Smith as an assistant. Last year, Smith as an assistant at King College (Tennessee) ... Kansas State added Sean McCann as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, and Tommy Myers as hitting instructor and outfielders coach. McCann was pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Missouri during the past year. Myers has been hitting instructor and outfielders coach at Central Missouri State. The school also announced Heath Schesser will continue for a second season as a volunteer assistant.

Men's basketball -- Appalachian State's Houston Fancher signed a two-year contract extension ... Walter Townes was selected to replace Mark Coleman as head coach at Drew. From 2000 to 2003, Townes worked as assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at Columbia ... Ron Jirsa was hired as head coach at Marshall. Jirsa, who succeeds Greg White, most recently has been an assistant at Clemson ... Rutgers-Camden chose Bill Culbertson as head coach ... Barclay Radebaugh was appointed as head coach at Queens (North Carolina) ... Adam Nelson was tabbed as head coach at Newbury to replace Don Doucette. Nelson has been head coach at Becker.

Men's basketball assistants -- St. Francis (Pennsylvania) appointed Josh Karabinos as an assistant coach ... Ron Bradley was tabbed as associate head coach at Clemson ... Fordham chose Travis Lyons as an assistant coach ... Gary Oehlbeck was selected as an assistant coach at St. John Fisher ... Ball State hired Howard Moore as an assistant coach. For the past four seasons, Moore has worked as an assistant at Bradley ... Mike Preston and Jim Fitzpatrick were named as assistants at Elon. Women's basketball -- Detroit Mercy named Mickey Barrett as head coach to succeed Anne Rexford. For the past 12 years, Barrett has been assistant men's basketball coach at the school ... Shelly Ethridge stepped down after six years as head coach at Missouri-St. Louis, effective June 30 ... John Ross accepted responsibilities as head women's basketball coach and head men's tennis coach at Calvin to replace Kim Gall as head basketball coach and Milan Norgauer, head tennis coach. Ross has been head men's and women's tennis coach and assistant men's basketball coach at Earlham for four years ... Montana State-Billings head coach Karyn Ridgeway resigned. Ridgeway has led the team to a Pacific West Conference title and two NCAA postseason appearances since becoming head coach in July 2000 ... Nicole Scholl was hired as head coach at Pacific (Oregon). Scholl has been an assistant at Binghamton for four years.

Women's basketball assistants -- Towson hired John Ardizone as an assistant coach. Ardizone has been an assistant at Army for five seasons ... Sacramento State chose Lindsey Dion as an assistant coach. Dion has worked as an assistant at Seattle Pacific during the 2002-03 year ... Marsha Frese and Chris Mennig were chosen as assistants at Illinois. Frese has been assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at Maryland, and Mennig has spent the past two years as an assistant coach at Illinois State ... Rochester selected Iesha Eldridge as an assistant coach ... Doug Hoselton was named as an assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth. Hoselton formerly has been head coach at New Mexico and New Mexico State ... Longwood added Nikki Atkinson as an assistant. Since 1999, Atkinson has been head coach and senior woman administrator at West Virginia Wesleyan ... Geoff Lanier was chosen as an assistant coach at Akron to take over for Art Prevost. For the past five seasons, Lanier has been head coach at North Dakota State College of Science ... Sharrona Reaves was hired as an assistant at West Virginia to succeed Joanna Bernabei. Reaves formerly has coached at Troy State and California. West Virginia also elevated Cindy Martin to first assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Greensboro awarded Jason Tuggle with additional responsibilities as head men's and women's cross country coach to replace Abby Hilemn. Tuggle will continue as head women's basketball coach at the school ... Jennifer Jacobsen resigned after three seasons as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Franklin & Marshall.

Field hockey -- Addy Malatesta stepped down as head coach at Wilkes to concentrate on responsibilities as director of athletics at the school. Malatesta guided the program for 14 years ... Moravian's Natalie Gozzard resigned as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach. Gozzard has guided the field hockey squad for two seasons and led the women's lacrosse program in its first season this past spring.

Football -- Jim Tressel, head coach at Ohio State, was awarded a six-year contract. Tressel, who led the school to a 14-0 record and a national championship last year, has been head coach for two seasons ... North Carolina Wesleyan selected Jack Ginn as head coach. The school will begin varsity competition in 2004. Ginn has served as quarterbacks coach and wide receivers coach at Shepherd for the past two seasons ... Merrimack head coach Gerry Sullivan resigned. Sullivan joined the program in 1996, served as interim head coach in 2001 and has been head coach for two seasons ... June Jones, head coach at Hawaii, was awarded a five-year contract through June 30, 2008 ... Bob Stoops, head coach at Oklahoma, was awarded a two-year contract extension through December 31, 2009.

Football assistants -- Joe DeGeorge was tabbed as defensive coordinator at Augustana (Illinois) ... Kyle Davis was added as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach and Erik Ieuter was chosen as a graduate assistant at Adams State. Davis, who succeeds Derek Frazier, formerly was assistant head coach at Southern Utah. Adams State also announced Gary Thomas was promoted to full-time quarterbacks coach, taking over for Eric Handke ... Cal Lee was hired as linebackers coach at Hawaii to replace George Lumpkin, who was named as defensive coordinator at the school after Kevin Lempa resigned. Lee has been athletics director and head football coach at St. Louis School in Honolulu and spent the past year as head coach of the Arena Football League's Hawaiian Islanders ... Texas A&M-Kingsville elevated Tony Johnson to offensive line coach to succeed Lee Hays. Formerly, Johnson has served as offensive coordinator at Graceland University and was an assistant at TCU.

Men's and women's golf -- Dean Marks was named as head women's coach at Kalamazoo ... North Carolina-Greensboro added Emily Marron as head women's coach ... Tim Mickelson was hired as head men's coach at San Diego. Mickelson has been an assistant men's coach at San Diego State for two years and replaces Tim Moher ... John Connelly resigned as head men's coach at Toledo. He guided the program during the 2002-03 season.

Men's and women's golf assistant -- Danielle Roudebush was appointed as an assistant women's coach at Virginia. The program is slated to begin competition this fall. Since 1998, Roudebush has been a sales support representative for Acushnet Company, a parent company of Titleist and Footjoy.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Dartmouth's Judy Parish Oberting resigned as head women's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Ryan Polley was appointed as head men's coach at Merrimack. For the past three seasons, Polley has worked as head girls' coach at Andover (Massachusetts) High School ... Smith named Wendy Walker as head women's coach to succeed Judy Strong, who will continue as head field hockey coach. Walker formerly was an assistant at Holy Cross and Boston College.

Men's and women's rowing -- Delaware head women's coach Amanda Kukla resigned after five seasons.

Men's soccer -- John Ramirez was named as head coach at John Jay. For the past three years, Ramirez has been an assistant at Molloy and formerly was an assistant at Long Island for 22 seasons.

Men's soccer assistants -- David Boutilier, a 2003 graduate and three-time soccer team captain at Drew, was added as an assistant coach at the school ... Mario Sanchez was tabbed as an assistant coach at Akron. Sanchez, who replaces Chad Flanders, was an assistant at Fresno State from 1999 to 2002.

Women's soccer -- Newberry selected Chris Davidovicz as an assistant coach. Davidovicz was a 2003 graduate of Virginia Tech, where he was a letter-winner on the men's soccer team ... Joe McCauley was tabbed as head coach at Eckerd.

Women's soccer assistants -- Slippery Rock tabbed Sergio Gonzalez as a part-time assistant coach. Gonzalez was interim assistant coach at the school in 2001-02 ... Frostburg State hired Denise Rogers and Jamie Olson as assistants. Rogers has played on the women's soccer squad at Elon for two years and will complete her bachelor's degree from the school in July. Olson is a May graduate of Campbell.

Softball -- Franklin & Marshall promoted Ann Goropoulos to head coach to succeed Robert Bunnell. Goropoulos has worked as an assistant with the program ... Wellesley selected Keri O'Meara as head softball coach and assistant professor of physical education, effective August 18. The school is scheduled to begin varsity competition during the 2004-05 season. O'Meara was an assistant coach at Dartmouth ... Leslie King Moore was tabbed as head coach at Pennsylvania.

Softball assistant -- Stephanie Hughes was hired as an assistant at Texas-San Antonio. Hughes most recently spent one season as an assistant at Navarro (Texas) College.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Matt Gardner was awarded responsibilities as head men's and women's swimming coach at Webster ... Andrew Waeger was hired as head men's and women's swimming coach at Slippery Rock. During the 2002-03 season, Waeger served as a graduate assistant with the program.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- College of Charleston added Kelly McClanahan as an assistant swimming and diving coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Methodist chose Kelly Brown as head women's coach ... Kate Malesevich was hired as head women's coach at Webster ... John Nelson was named as head men's coach at Hawaii to succeed Jim Schwitters, who is retiring after 38 seasons. Nelson has been head coach at San Diego State for 10 seasons ... Augustana (Illinois) appointed Brad Dietzel as head men's and women's coach. Dietzel, who takes over for Todd Creal, has been a tennis professional since 2002 ... Eric Allen was tabbed as head men's and women's coach at North Carolina Wesleyan. Allen is a 2003 graduate of the school and was a three-year letter-winner with the tennis program ... Chad Braun and LeAnn Hagen were named as head men's and head women's coaches, respectively, at Monmouth (Illinois), to succeed Dennis Mann, who will retain head women's basketball coaching responsibilities. Braun will continue as football defensive coordinator, a position he has held for the past three seasons, and Hagen will retain duties as head softball coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Bill Jordan resigned as head men's track and field coach and football offensive coordinator at Grove City ... Andrew Valmon was selected as head men's and women's coach at Maryland ... Earlham selected Nick Johnson as head men's and women's coach, succeeding Pat Thomas, who will continue as head men's and women's cross country coach and as assistant track coach. Johnson also will serve as football linebackers coach ... UC Riverside will not renew the contract of head coach Chris Rinne, who has been with the school since 1969.

Men's and women's volleyball -- John Jay elevated Mamdouh Hassan to head women's coach. Hassan has been with the program since 1997 ... Fred Glanville was named as head women's coach at Westfield State. Glanville has been Ludlow (Massachusetts) High School's head girls' coach for the past five years and head boys' coach since 1996 ... Central (Iowa) chose Kent Clayberg, associate head coach, as head women's coach. Clayberg takes over for Megan Clayberg, who is relinquishing head coaching duties after 12 seasons, but will remain as associate head coach ... Wayne Chadwick was awarded duties as head women's coach at Manchester.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Sarah Deuel assumed duties as an assistant at Frostburg State. For the past two seasons, Deuel has been an assistant at Elmira.

Wrestling -- Wilkes promoted Jon Laudenslager to head coach to replace Alan Zellner, who resigned to become director of diversity at the school. For the past three seasons, Laudenslager has worked as an assistant coach.

STAFF

Academic services -- New Orleans tabbed Angela Crock as director of student-athlete support services. For the past five months, Crock has worked as a mentor in the athletics department at Tulane ... Meghan Doyle was named as director of student services at Maine. Doyle has been an assistant in academic support services at the school for three years.

Athletic trainers -- Hope Ghorley was named as athletic trainer at Sam Houston State ... UC Riverside head athletic trainer Bill Brewer resigned, effective July 31. Brewer joined the school in 1988 and has been head athletic trainer since 1990.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Tom Fregoso was named as assistant athletic trainer at Oregon State. For the past 19 years, Fregoso, who replaces Kimberly Frostad, has worked as head athletic trainer at Portland.

Broadcasting -- Phil Woodall was appointed as full-time director of the Buffalo Sports Network at West Texas A&M. Since 1987, Woodall has been broadcasting the school's sports action.

Facilities -- Wisconsin-Superior hired Jeffrey Dupont as director of recreational facilities, effective July 14. Dupont has been assistant director of the department of recreational services at Fort Lewis.

Marketing/promotions -- Jay Martin was hired as marketing and communications coordinator at Wheaton (Illinois). For the past six years, Martin has worked as head baseball coach and associate professor of physical education at Malone College.

Sports information -- Garry Bowman was elevated to sports information director at Kansas State. Bowman has been with the school's sports information department for two years ... Zach Fisher was tabbed as sports information director at West Texas A&M. Fisher was assistant sports information director at Pittsburg State for two years.

Sports information assistant -- Tom Gilbert was promoted to assistant sports information director for men's basketball at Kansas State. Gilbert has been with the school for four years.

Strength and conditioning -- Kyle Speer assumed responsibilities as strength and conditioning coach at Sam Houston State ... Drexel chose Michael Rankin as strength and conditioning coach. Rankin was a strength and conditioning graduate assistant at the school before serving as interim coach for the past four months.

Ticket office -- Jim D'Arecca was added as director of new ticket sales and event promotions at Florida International. For the past two years, D'Arecca has served as group ticket sales manager at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-Continent Conference named Ron Bertovich as commissioner. For the past five years, Bertovich, who succeeds Jon Steinbrecher, has been executive vice-president of administration for the NHL's Buffalo Sabres ... The Missouri Valley Conference named the following as athletics officers for 2003-04: John P. Schlegel, chair of the presidents council; Tim Dickel, president of the Missouri Valley Conference; and Andrea Myers, chair of the athletics administrators. The league also promoted Jack Watkins to associate commissioner for marketing and television, Mike Kern to associate commissioner for communications, Stacey Montooth to assistant commissioner for communications, John Sanders to assistant commissioner for operations and championships, Rich Steed to chief financial officer and Sarah Weier to director of compliance and community relations. Also Erica Fricke was named as as assistant director of communications for the conference ... The Eastern College Athletic Conference named Brian Young as coordinator of championships and chose Paul Duffy as Division I men's ice hockey league coordinator of officials. Young, a 2002 Ithaca graduate, was an Asa S. Bushnell intern in strategic marketing and business development with the league during the 2002-03 academic year. Duffy, who succeeds the retired John Gallagher, has been secretary-rules editor for the NCAA Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee since 1989 and formerly was head coach at Geneseo State for 28 years.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the following as newly elected members to its Board of Directors: Mickie DeMoss, head coach at Kentucky, vice-president; Bonnie Hendrickson, head coach at Virginia Tech, secretary; Lisa Bluder, head coach at Iowa, Division I Midwest representative; Julie Wilhoit, head coach at Loyola Marymount, Division I West representative; Douglas Bruno, head coach at DePaul, male coaches of women's basketball representative; and Stephanie Glance, assistant coach at North Carolina State, assistant coaches representative. The association also named Wendy Larry, head coach at Old Dominion, as president. Larry has been vice-president for the last two years.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Mike Ward and Eddie Weatherington were hired as assistant directors of enforcement. Ward has been an investigator at Smith and Carson, Co., and Weatherington has been associate director of judicial services at Clemson. Jay Jones and Stephanie Quigg were selected as assistant directors of membership services. Jones has been director of compliance at Saint Louis and Quigg was a department attorney with Bricker and Eckler LLP.

CORRECTIONS

An article in the June 23 NCAA News about Division I-A conference championship games in football incorrectly stated that the Southeastern, Big 12 and Western Athletic Conferences currently conduct championship games. In fact, the SEC, the Big 12 and the Mid-American Conference conduct these games.

A photo of participants selected for the NCAA Leadership Institute misidentified Terrence Hines, associate athletics director at the University of Kansas, as David Mines, director of special projects at the Ohio Valley Conference.

REPRIMAND

The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded Southern New Hampshire University student-athletes Anthony Augustine and Michael Savastra for their participation in an altercation with student-athletes from Sonoma State University during the 2002 Division II Men's Soccer Championship. Augustine and Savastra were issued red cards and were dismissed from the match. The committee also decided to ban both players from the next NCAA tournament game in which Southern New Hampshire is selected and eligible to participate. This penalty is in effect regardless of the year and team for which both players compete.

NOTABLES

Rickie Weeks, a baseball player at Southern, was chosen as the Dick Howser award winner as the top college baseball player in the nation. In 158 at-bats this season, Weeks batted .500, with 16 home runs, 27 stolen bases and 67 RBI ... Daniel Lincoln, a senior at Arkansas, and Perdita Felicien, a senior at Illinois, were named as Mondo Division I athletes of the year for outdoor track and field by the U.S. Track Coaches Association. Lincoln captured his third consecutive NCAA title in the steeplechase, while Felicien won the 100-meter high hurdles ... The U.S. Track Coaches Association also named Phil Lundin and Pat Henry as Division I outdoor track and field coaches of the year. Lundin serves as head men's coach at Minnesota and Henry is head women's coach at LSU ... Ryan Garko, a catcher at Stanford, was named as the recipient of this year's Johnny Bench award as the nation's top college baseball catcher. Garko, co-Pacific-10 Conference player of the year, hit .402, 18 home runs and tied a school record with 92 RBI for the season.

DEATHS

Dick Fick, former head men's basketball coach at Morehead State, died April 29. He was 50. Fick spent six seasons as head coach at the school from 1991 to 1997. Most recently, he had been a part-time assistant coach at St. Francis (Illinois) before stepping down after the 2002-03 season. He also was an assistant at Creighton from 1985 to 1991 and at Valparaiso from 1978 to 1985.

Dave Reynolds, head lacrosse coach at Wesley, died April 20. Reynolds, 25, also worked as director of intramurals at the school.

Billy Gaines, a football player at Pittsburgh, died in an accident June 18. He was 19. Gaines was a sophomore wide receiver.

Peter Carlesimo, former athletics administrator and coach, died June 22. He was 87. Carlesimo formerly was athletics director at Fordham and coached football and basketball at Scranton. Carlesimo also formerly was executive director of the National Invitation Tournament.

Charles O. Carroll, former football player at Washington, died June 23 at the age of 96. He was a running back and linebacker for the school, earning all-American recognition in 1927-28 season. Carroll, who established in 1928 and still holds the school record for the most points scored in a game at 36, was a 1964 National Football Foundation Hall of Fame inductee and is one of three Washington players to have his number retired.

Former Washington and all-Pacific-10 Conference football player Fred Small died June 24. Small, a motorcycle policeman, was involved in a traffic accident. He was 39. Small competed at Washington from 1981 to 1984, earned all-conference honors during his senior season and was a member of the 1982 Rose Bowl and 1985 Orange Bowl teams.

Glenn Leggett, former president at Grinnell, died June 2. Leggett was 85.
