Rutgers-Newark appoints head soccer coach

Rutgers-Newark has selected Chris Condron as its head men's soccer coach.

For the past two seasons, Condron has served as head coach at Keuka. During his tenure at the school, his teams captured two North Eastern Athletic Conference championships. Before his tenure at Keuka, Condron was an assistant at Clarkson in 2000. He also worked as an assistant at Elizabethtown in 1999, where he led the program to a Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Condron was a men's soccer student-athlete at Elizabethtown, where he helped the school capture four straight NCAA tournament berths. As a senior, he served as captain and earned all-America recognition from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Condron earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education in 1994 from Elizabethtown.

American's Tom George resigned as director of athletics, effective July 31 ... Pamela S. Samuelson was chosen as athletics director at Susquehanna, effective August 4. Since 1998, Samuelson, who succeeds Don Harnum, has been assistant director of athletics at Massachusetts-Boston ... Oberlin named Vin Lananna as director of athletics and professor of physical education. Since 1992, Lananna has been director of track and field and cross country at Stanford ... Nova Southeastern promoted Michael Mominey to director of athletics. Mominey, who will retain head baseball coaching duties, has been interim athletics director since January 2.

Roxann Moraza resigned as senior woman administrator and head women's softball coach at Lehman ... Clayton State hired Monique Holland as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director. For the past two years, Holland has been assistant director of compliance at Georgia Tech ... Sherry Penner was hired as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for game management and facilities at North Dakota. Penner has been an associate athletics director at Baker University for three years ... Kathleen Heitzman resigned as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for NCAA compliance at New Jersey Institute of Technology to become an associate athletics director at Bloomsburg ... Stetson elevated Jan Usher to senior woman administrator and coordinator of academic support. For the past four years, Usher has worked as administrative assistant to the athletics director.

Cota was the West Coast Conference women's coach of the year this season ... Bill Meiers was hired as head men's and women's coach at Arcadia ... Stevens Institute of Technology added Kevin McGinn as head men's and women's coach to replace Al Alonso. McGinn spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Columbia.

Field hockey -- Susan Mackley was named as head coach at Goucher. For the past three seasons, Mackley, who replaces Kim Murdock, has worked as head coach at Notre Dame (Maryland) ... Amherst awarded head coaching responsibilities to Carol Knerr after she spent the past two seasons sharing duties with Christine Paradis. Paradis will continue as an assistant coach and head women's lacrosse coach ... Roanoke chose Emily Stone as head field hockey and assistant women's lacrosse coach. Last season, Stone was interim head women's lacrosse coach at the school.

Field hockey assistants -- Tara Herrmann accepted duties as an assistant coach at Bucknell. Herrmann is a 2003 graduate of Old Dominion, where she was a field hockey all-American ... Courtney Breen was awarded assistant coaching responsibilities at Stonehill.

Football -- Lane hired Darrin Hayes as head coach.

Football assistants -- Lane tabbed Michael Jackson as offensive coordinator and Ted Bahhur as quarterbacks and wide receivers coach ... John Banaszak was chosen as defensive line coach at Robert Morris ... Lenoir-Rhyne appointed David Elder as director of football operations and high school relations ... Greg Etter accepted assistant coaching duties at Carthage ... Western Illinois tabbed Ronnie Harmon as running backs and fullbacks coach to replace Larry Holton. Harmon formerly played professionally in the NFL and recently has been coaching at the high school level ... Gary Krol was named as football quarterbacks and passing game coordinator and as an assistant baseball coach at Westminster (Pennsylvania). Krol has been an assistant football coach at Millersville for the past six years ... Brian Hodges accepted duties as a graduate assistant for football operations at Illinois ... Coker named John Handrigan as head coach to succeed Don Schmotzer, who will continue as head men's basketball coach. Handrigan has been top assistant men's coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) for three years ... Mark Gaynor was hired as head men's coach at Francis Marion to succeed Jonathan Burnett. Gaynor has been head men's coach at Texas-Pan American for three years ... Adams State tabbed Cole Wasinger as head coach. Men's and women's gymnastics assistant -- West Virginia named David Kuzara as an assistant coach. From 1993 to 2002, Kuzara was head coach at Massachusetts, where the program captured two Atlantic 10 Conference championships.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Ohio State signed head men's coach John Markell to a new contract.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Andrew Towers was selected as head men's coach at Hartford ... Towson appointed Missy Holmes as head women's coach. Holmes has been an assistant coach at Princeton since 2001 ... Andrew Fink was tabbed as head men's coach at Mount Ida ... Loyola (Maryland) named Kerri Johnson as head women's coach ... Wittenberg chose Katherine Haney as head women's coach. Haney, who has been assistant women's lacrosse and women's soccer coach at Utica, replaces Nancy Beck.

Women's soccer -- North Carolina Wesleyan head coach Kelly Walters resigned after four years to assume duties as head coach at Kenyon ... Mike Brewer resigned as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan to become an assistant women's coach at Iowa ... Arcadia hired Richard Brownell as head coach. For the past three seasons, Brownell has led the program at Bucks County (Pennsylvania) Community College ... Lisa Cole assumed responsibilities as head coach at Rhode Island. Cole, who has been an assistant at Connecticut for the past three seasons, succeeds Geoff Bennett.

Women's soccer assistant -- Manoj Khettry was appointed as an assistant coach at Dayton.

Softball -- Mark Katarski was hired as head coach at Pittsburgh-Greensburg to replace Rhonda Cooley. Katarski has been assistant baseball coach at the school for two seasons and will retain responsibilities as sports information director and assistant women's basketball coach ... Bradley appointed Venus Taylor as head coach. Taylor was an assistant at Georgia Tech ... Richie Bruister assumed responsibilities as head coach at Henderson State. Since August 2000, Bruister has worked as an assistant at Jones County (Mississippi) Junior College ... Trisha Dean resigned after two seasons as head coach at Saint Mary's (California) to accept a position as an assistant at Stanford.

Softball assistant -- New Jersey City tabbed Michael Orlando as an assistant.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Benji DeMotte resigned as head men's and women's coach at Binghamton to become an assistant women's swimming coach at Arkansas. DeMotte has been in charge of the programs for five years. The school promoted Patrice Back, an assistant for the past five years, to replace DeMotte ... Julie Benker O'Brien was chosen as aquatics coordinator and head men's and women's club swimming coach at Roger Williams. O'Brien has been aquatics director and head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Rochester since 1996.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Penn State named John Hargis as an assistant men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Jen Callen resigned as head women's coach at North Carolina ... Tyler Gibson accepted responsibilities as head men's coach and Donna Lisevick assumed duties as head women's coach at Hartford ... UTEP tabbed Jamie Campbell as head women's coach ... Montevallo's Leslie Smith resigned as head women's coach ... Allegheny tabbed Jared Luteran as head men's and women's coach ... Michael Coleman was selected as head women's coach at Nova Southeastern. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the 2003-04 school year. Coleman has been head women's coach at George Mason for two years.

Men's and women's track and field -- Carthage promoted Stephanie Ulicny to head women's coach. Ulicny has been associate head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Carthage announced Steve Ray as director of track and field operations.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Jolie Ward was named as head women's coach at Eastern Connecticut State ... Pavlina Klimova was hired as head women's coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology to succeed Anthony Valbrun. For the past two seasons, Klimova has worked as a graduate assistant and fitness center coordinator at Wagner ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg appointed Leroy Simms as head women's coach to succeed Janet Buchheit. Simms spent the past season as an assistant coach at Waynesburg ... Oakland appointed David Schmidlin as head women's coach. Schmidlin, who takes over for Mark Ridley, has been an assistant men's coach at Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne ... Jean-Paul Farineau was chosen as head women's coach at Saint Michael's to succeed Betsy Cieplicki. Farineau formerly was head coach of the program from 1983 to 1986.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Birmingham-Southern selected Pavlina Steffkova and Justin Dee as assistant coaches ... Tracey Sawvel was chosen as an assistant women's coach at Iona ... Mount Ida hired Mike Chin as an assistant women's coach ... Tim Walenga was tabbed as an assistant coach at Elon. For the past three seasons, Walenga has worked as an assistant coach at Marshall ... Krista Singleton was hired as an assistant at Bradley. During the 2000 and 2001 seasons, Singleton was an assistant at Cleveland State ... Saint Michael's chose Emily Verbridge as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's water polo -- UC Irvine will not renew the contract of head women's coach Julie Swail, who has led the program since October 1999.

Wrestling assistant -- North Carolina-Greensboro chose Sam Kline as an assistant coach.

STAFF

Academic services -- Penn State announced the retirement of Don Ferrell, academic-athletics advisor. Ferrell joined the school in 1970 and has been academic-athletics advisor since 1982.

Academic services assistant -- Clarissa Gentzler was chosen as a grant-in-aid specialist in the academic services department at Illinois.

Administrative -- Misericordia hired Erick Hart as an athletics department intern.

Athletic trainers -- Birmingham-Southern elevated Mike Morley to head athletic trainer ... North Carolina-Wilmington's Tom Lemley resigned as director of athletic training services. The school announced Kara Williams as interim director of athletic training services ... Sean Hanrahan was named as head athletic trainer at Mount Ida ... Bradley announced Eric Redman as head athletic trainer. Since 1998, Redman has been head athletic trainer at Tyler (Texas) Junior College.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Birmingham-Southern named Matt Kirkpatrick as an assistant athletic trainer ... Illinois appointed Brian Collette as an assistant athletic trainer. For the last two years, Collette has worked as a graduate assistant at Upper Iowa.

Development assistant -- Elon chose Jennifer Poole as an assistant with the Elon Athletics Foundation. Poole is a 2003 graduate of Appalachian State.

Marketing/promotions -- Southeastern Louisiana chose Tommy Krysan as director of corporate sales and broadcast operations ... Kevin Frattura resigned as director of corporate sales, marketing and ticket operations at Albany (New York) to assume responsibilities with the NBA's Indiana Pacers. Frattura has been with the school since 2001.

Operations assistant -- Ryan Tressel was hired as an operations intern at Bradley to replace Josh Monk. Tressel served as an assistant men's basketball coach at St. Scholastica last season.

Sports information -- Matt Michalec was hired as full-time sports information director at Norfolk State. Michalec has been serving in an interim capacity since January 1 ... Jim Taylor was hired as sports information director at Hamilton. Taylor was an editorial assistant in the prep sports department with the Chicago Tribune ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis promoted Ed Holdaway to sports information specialist. For the past two years, Holdaway served as part-time assistant sports information director at the school ... Northern Michigan selected David Faiella as sports information director to replace Jim Pinar. Faiella joined the school as assistant sports information director in August 2001 and has been interim sports information director since December.

Sports information assistants -- Birmingham-Southern promoted Will Chandler to associate sports information director and named Bailey Mixon as assistant sports information director ... Kemmler Chapple was chosen as assistant sports information director at Southeastern Louisiana. Chapple has been a graduate assistant in the school's sports information office for the past year ... Elon selected Megan Donald as a sports information assistant. Donald is a 2003 graduate of Roanoke ... Seton Hall tabbed Jeff Mead as assistant sports information director. During the 2002-03 season, Mead was a communications assistant with the Big East Conference ... La Salle named Meaghann Schulte as assistant director of athletics communications and Marc Mullen as athletics communications assistant ... Travis Steiner and Kevin Walsh were added as sports information interns at Illinois. Steiner and Walsh are 2003 graduates of the school.

Strength and conditioning -- Northern Colorado selected Kyle Ryan as strength and conditioning coach.

Ticket office assistant -- Jason Coomer was tabbed as assistant director of ticket sales and operations at DePaul.

CONFERENCES

Robert DeGregorio Jr. was appointed commissioner of the Atlantic Hockey Conference. The Division I conference is set to begin competition during the 2003-04 season with nine members ... The Sunshine State Conference chose Leslie Ricker as media relations assistant/membership services liaison.

NOTABLES

U.S. Field Hockey selected Beth Anders, head coach at Old Dominion, as head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team. Anders has been interim coach since April and formerly led the national team in 1985 and from 1990 to 1993.

DEATHS

Former Notre Dame football assistant coach Joe Moore died of lung cancer July 3. He was 71. Moore served as offensive line coach at Notre Dame from 1988 to 1996 and also coached at Pittsburgh from 1977 to 1985.

Dave Polansky, former basketball coach at CCNY, died June 16. Polansky was 83.
