Newberry nets Staniford as head coach

Newberry has named David Staniford as head tennis coach.

For the past 10 seasons, Staniford has been in charge of the men's tennis program at Marquette. Before coming to Marquette, Staniford was head men's coach at Illinois State for eight seasons. He also served as head women's coach at the school from 1985 to 1990. Staniford, the author of several articles and books, also has fulfilled coaching stints in Australia and Canada, as well as in Oregon, Florida and Wisconsin.

As a tennis student-athlete at the University of Oregon, Staniford played No. 1 singles. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1969 at Oregon, where he also earned a master's degree in physical education and recreation in 1970 and a doctorate in physical education and leisure studies in 1975.

Livingston Alexander was named as president at Pittsburgh-Bradford, effective August 1. Alexander has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Kean ... James L. Gearity resigned as president at Belmont Abbey, effective at the end of the academic year. The school announced Placid D. Solari, chancellor at Belmont Abbey, as interim president ... Mars Hill chose Dan G. Lunsford as president. Lunsford has been fulfilling the position on an interim basis ... Jeanne O'Laughlin announced plans to retire as president at Barry, effective June 30, 2004 ... Becker selected Bruce Stronach, provost and chief operating officer at the school, as acting president ... Concordia-Moorhead President Thomas W. Thomsen resigned, effective July 1 ... Indiana (Pennsylvania) selected Derek J. Hodgson as president, effective August 15, to succeed the retiring Lawrence K. Pettit. Hodgson has been vice-chancellor for academic affairs at Nebraska-Omaha ... Robert V. Antonucci was named as president at Fitchburg State. Antonucci has been president of Riverdeep, The Learning Company, in Massachusetts ... New Mexico chose Louis Caldera as president, effective August 1. Most recently, Caldera has been vice-chancellor for university advancement for the California State University system ... Ferris State appointed David L. Eisler, provost and vice-president for academic affairs and professor of music at Weber State, as president ... Andrew Hugine Jr. was named as president at South Carolina State, effective in July, after serving as interim executive vice-president at the school ... Joan Hinde Stewart, dean of liberal arts and professor of French at South Carolina, was chosen as president at Hamilton, effective July 1.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Northwestern hired Mark H. Murphy as director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation, effective June 16, to succeed the retiring Charles F. Taylor. For the past 11 years, Murphy has been director of the division of physical education, recreation and athletics at Colgate ... John Robinson resigned as director of athletics at UNLV, but will continue as head football coach at the school. Robinson has been athletics director since January 2002. The school announced Fred Albrecht, vice-president for university and community relations at UNLV, as interim athletics director ... Minnesota-Crookston announced Stephanie Helgeson as interim athletics director ... North Carolina Central chose William Hayes as athletics director ... Darryl Rogers, director of athletics at Southern Connecticut State, retired June 1. Rogers, who has been athletics director since 1992, was a member of the NCAA Football Rules Committee and the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports. The school named Patricia D. Nicol, associate athletics director, and Antonio L. Aceto, coordinator of athletics facilities, as interim co-athletics directors.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Nancy Lewis was named as interim senior woman administrator and interim associate athletics director at San Jose State. Lewis, who will continue as director of golf at the school, succeeds Carolyn Lewis, who is retiring ... Oklahoma named Stephanie Rempe as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Chicago promoted Brian Baldea to associate athletics director. Baldea, who was an assistant athletics director, will retain duties as head baseball coach ... Wichita State hired Brian Pracht as associate athletics director for marketing and promotions. Since 1997, Pracht has been with the Southland Conference, most recently serving as assistant commissioner for marketing and business ... Kevin Sponzo was elevated to associate athletics director for facilities and operations at Seton Hall. Sponzo, who is in his fifth year with the school, was assistant athletics director for facilities ... Tina Fahan was promoted to associate athletics director at Mount St. Vincent. Fahan has been an assistant athletics director for nine years and will continue as head men's and women's cross country coach.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Jennifer Coleman was appointed as assistant director of athletics for facilities management and Dave Hilbert was chosen as assistant athletics director for sports information at Chicago. Coleman has been assistant athletics director for event management at Dartmouth for 13 years and Hilbert has been the sports information director at Chicago since 1993 ... Mount St. Vincent named Dave Genovese as assistant athletics director and head men's basketball coach. Genovese replaces Chuck Mancuso as head basketball coach. Mancuso will continue as athletics director ... San Jose State appointed Ricardo Hooper as assistant director of athletics for internal operations. Hooper joined the school as assistant athletics director for academic services in 2002.

Baseball -- Pomona-Pitzer selected Frank Pericolosi as head coach to succeed Paul Svagdis. Pericolosi was interim head coach at the school for the 2003 season ... Bob Fornelli was hired as head coach at Emporia State. In the past seven years, Fornelli has led the program at Fort Hays State to four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships ... Scott Broghamer resigned as head coach at Iowa ... Bluffton announced James Grandey as head baseball coach and assistant football coach.

Men's basketball -- Gary Grzesk was appointed as head coach at Lakeland.

Men's basketball assistants -- Ed Pinckney was tabbed as an assistant coach at Villanova. Pinckney takes over for Joe Jones ... Evansville named Jason Zimmerman as an assistant. For the past seven seasons, Zimmerman has been at Davidson ... Michael Wernicki assumed duties as an assistant coach at Canisius after serving as an assistant at Mercyhurst for the past six seasons. Wernicki replaces Tyrone Thomas ... Drake added Keno Davis, Chris Davis and Chad Buchanan as assistant coaches ... Jayson Gee was awarded assistant coaching duties at St. Bonaventure ... Dayton named Jon Borovich as director of basketball operations ... Kareem Richardson was hired as an assistant at Evansville. Richardson formerly has coached at Indianapolis, Indiana State and Wright State ... Campbell named Brian Alexander as an assistant coach ... New Jersey Institute of Technology will not renew the contract of top assistant coach Anthony Walker, who has been with the school for two years ... Tommy Dempsey was chosen as an assistant coach at Rider.

Women's basketball -- MaChelle Joseph was promoted to head coach at Georgia Tech to succeed Agnus Berenato. For the past two seasons, Joseph has been top assistant with the program ... Potsdam State selected Devonna Williams as head coach ... Dickie McCarthy was chosen as head coach at Sewanee (University of the South) ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) tabbed Melissa Hodgdon as head coach ... Barb Bausch resigned as head coach at Guilford to become an assistant women's coach at Cal State Fullerton ... Tennessee State's Valencia Jordan was reassigned within the athletics department after three seasons as head coach.

Women's basketball assistants -- Mississippi State appointed Steve Curtis as an assistant coach. Curtis, who formerly was an assistant with the school during the 1997-98 season, spent the past season as an assistant at Texas A&M ... Terry Canova was awarded responsibilities as an assistant at South Alabama. For the past three years, Canova has been top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe ... Joanie O'Brien was named as associate coach at Auburn ... Santa Clara awarded assistant coaching responsibilities to Tanya Bauer, who takes over for Katie Cronin, who resigned. ... Kristen Holt and Paula Johnson were added as assistant coaches at Wichita State. The school also announced the selection of Megan Wright as director of basketball operations. Holt was interim head coach at Radford during the 2001-02 season and Johnson has spent the past two seasons as an assistant at North Carolina State. Wright has been a member of the event management/operations staff at the school while completing a master of business administration degree ... Drake appointed Linda Lappe as an assistant coach ... Amy Valentino resigned after one season as top assistant coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology ... Illinois State selected Willie Cox as an assistant coach ... Carolyn DeHoff was hired as an assistant at Utah. DeHoff, who replaces Joe Legerski, has been an assistant at Weber State for five seasons.

Men's and women's cross country -- Arnold Minkoff was chosen as head men's and women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track coach at Farmingdale State. Minkoff, who takes over for the retired Steve Hayden, formerly was head cross country coach at the school from 1984 to 1985 and head track coach from 1980 to 1989 ... Washington and Jefferson named Mark Fitzpatrick as head men's and women's cross country and track coach.

Field hockey assistant -- Davidson awarded assistant coaching duties to Laura Emery.

Football -- Lawrence Livingston So was hired as head coach at Earlham.

Football assistants -- Kasey Dunn, assistant head coach at Alabama, was reassigned within the athletics department. Dunn, who was running backs coach, has been with the school since January ... Grove City promoted Rob Skaricich to defensive coordinator after he most recently was defensive backs coach. The school announced Brock McCullough as defensive backs coach ... Glenn Caruso was hired as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Caruso was offensive coordinator at North Dakota State ... Steve Hellyer was chosen as director of football operations at Kentucky. Most recently, Hellyer has worked as executive director of the Iowa Greyhound Association and formerly was director of football operations and sports information director at Oregon ... Alabama selected Charlie Harbison as wide receivers coach. Harbison, who has been defensive backs coach at LSU for two seasons, formerly was defensive backs coach at Alabama from 1998 to 2000.

Men's and women's golf -- Seton Hall tabbed Scott Allen as head men's coach. Allen has been head coach at Manhattanville since 1998 ... Washington and Jefferson tabbed Peter Coughlin as head men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- St. Andrews Presbyterian appointed Samantha Valder as head women's coach. The program is slated to begin competition during the 2003-04 season. Valder was an assistant at Cayuga (New York) Community College for two seasons ... Jill Penrose was selected as head women's coach at Methodist ... Towson will not renew the contract of head women's coach Linda Ohrin.

Men's soccer -- Keystone awarded head coaching responsibilities to Winga Siwale ... New England tabbed David DeCew as head men's soccer and baseball coach.

Men's soccer assistants -- Nathaniel D. Day was hired as an assistant coach at Utica ... Ben Fisher was added as an assistant at Belmont.

Women's soccer -- Pomona-Pitzer selected Jennifer Scanlon to succeed Eli Koenn-Bollinger as head coach. Koenn-Bollinger will continue as head softball coach. Scanlon has been head coach at Kenyon since 2000 ... Todd Sniper was named as head coach at St. Joseph's (Maine).

Women's soccer assistants -- Amy Simonson was selected as an assistant coach at Cincinnati to replace Becki Poeppelmeier ... John Ross was appointed as an assistant coach at North Dakota State.

Softball -- Kelly Erickson was promoted to head coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point to succeed Paul Caufield, who will continue as an assistant men's hockey coach. Erickson has been an assistant with the program for the past two seasons ... Tanya Spishak resigned as head coach at Belmont. Spishak has been in charge of the program for three years ... New Jersey City elevated Bridgette Quimpo to head coach to replace Tara Laposa, who resigned, and interim head coach Andy Luciani, who will continue with the school's sports medicine department. Quimpo was an assistant with the program during the 2003 season.

Men's and women's swimming -- Chicago tabbed George Villarreal as head men's coach. From 1998 to 2003, Villarreal worked as head men's and women's coach at Frostburg State.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Army hired Beth Jerome and Matt Crispino as assistant swimming and diving coaches. Jerome has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Utah and Crispino spent the 2002-03 season as a graduate assistant at Florida State.

Men's and women's tennis -- Nebraska Wesleyan tabbed Rick Harley as head men's and women's coach to succeed co-head coaches Kirk Cox and Sandy Hilsabeck. For the past seven years, Harley has been head women's golf coach at the school and formerly was an assistant tennis coach from 1996 to 1997 ... Texas-Pan American hired Eduardo Provencio as head men's and women's coach to succeed Todd Chapman. Provencio has been head coach at Metro State, where he was recognized as the 2002-03 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's and women's coach of the year ... Newberry hired David Staniford as head men's tennis coach. Staniford has served as head men's coach at Marquette for the past 10 seasons.

Men's and women's track and field -- Rose-Hulman tabbed Larry Cole as head track and field and men's cross country coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Joe Chojnacki was promoted to head women's coach at Adelphi. Chojnacki most recently has been working as interim head coach after serving as an assistant coach for two years ... Goucher appointed Jeremy Price as head women's coach. Price has been a physical education teacher and athletics director at Grace Christian School in Maryland ... Amy Bowen was awarded additional duties as head women's volleyball coach at Gordon. Bowen, who served as interim head volleyball coach during the 2001 season, will retain duties as an assistant women's basketball coach.

STAFF

Athletic trainers -- Dale Rudd was selected as director of athletic training and rehabilitation at UCLA. Rudd, who formerly fulfilled the same capacity at the school from 1990 to 1997, has been head athletic trainer at California for the past year ... Roger Williams tabbed Kristin Raffa as head athletic trainer. Raffa has been associate athletic trainer at Wheaton (Massachusetts) for two years.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Adelphi elevated Mike Gavagan to full-time assistant athletic trainer. Gavagan, who replaces Laura Iannucci, has been a graduate assistant.

Business manager -- Alicia Alford assumed duties as athletics business manager at Seton Hall. For the past two years, Alford has worked as a compliance assistant at the school.

DEATHS

Rodney Abercrombie, a senior football defensive back at California (Pennsylvania), died May 15. He was 19.

Former Louisiana Tech head men's basketball coach Emmett Hendricks died May 18 at the age of 65. Hendricks guided the team for three seasons after spending two as an assistant. During his tenure as head coach, he earned Southland Conference coach of the year recognition in 1975-76 and 1976-77.

Quigg Newton, former president at Colorado, died April 4. Newton was 91.

Charles Williams, a football cornerback at Samford, died in a recent car accident. He was 21. Williams, a junior, appeared in eight games last season.
