Herbert appointed as president at Indiana

Indiana has selected Adam W. Herbert Jr. as president. Herbert succeeds Myles Brand, who became president of the NCAA January 1.

Herbert, a former chair of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council, presently serves as Regents Professor and founding executive director of the Florida Center for Public Policy and Leadership Development at North Florida. From 1998 to 2001, he was chancellor of the State University System of Florida. He also was president at North Florida from 1989 to 1998.

A former member of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, Herbert has held administrative and teaching appointments at Florida International, Virginia Tech and Southern California. In addition, he has been elected to the National Academy of Public Administration and has completed two terms on its board of trustees. Currently, Herbert is a member of the Education Commission to the States after being appointed for the position by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Herbert earned a bachelor of arts in political science in 1966 and a master of public administration in 1967 from Southern California. He also earned a doctorate in urban affairs and public administration at Pittsburgh in 1971.

Colorado State appointed Larry Penley as president. Penley formerly was dean of the business school at Arizona State ... New Paltz State named Steven G. Poskanzer as president. Poskanzer has been interim president at the school ... Macalester chose Brian C. Rosenberg, dean of the faculty at Lawrence, as president ... Merrill J. Bateman resigned as president at Brigham Young in order to return to full-time church service ... Campbell selected Jerry Wallace as president. Wallace has been special assistant to the president and the James R. Coates professor of religion at the Campbell University School of Divinity.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Norfolk State awarded Athletics Director Orby Moss a contract extension through 2008. Moss, a former member of the NCAA Division I Management Council, serves as director of athletics and assistant vice-president for student affairs at the school ... Kansas named Lew Perkins as director of athletics to succeed Al Bohl and interim athletics director Drue Jennings. For the past 13 years, Perkins has led the athletics department at Connecticut. He formerly was athletics director at Maryland and Wichita State. Jeffrey Hathaway was chosen as athletics director at Connecticut to replace Perkins. Hathaway formerly was senior associate athletics director at the school and has been athletics director at Colorado State since 2001. Colorado State named Christine Susemihl as interim director of athletics to succeed Hathaway. Susemihl has been with the school since 1973 and currently serves as associate athletics director for compliance ... Ken Godfrey, associate vice-president of recreation and athletics at Northern Michigan, was named as athletics director at the school to replace Dan Spielmann. Godfrey, who has been with the school since 1979, has been interim athletics director and will continue as associate vice-president of recreation and athletics ... Wyoming's Lee Moon stepped down as athletics director. Moon had guided the program for seven years ... Janet Little was selected as interim athletics director at Colgate ... Timon Corwin was named as director of men's athletics at Kalamazoo, effective July 1. Corwin will retain head men's tennis coaching responsibilities ... Christopher Ragsdale was announced as athletics director at La Verne, effective July 7. Ragsdale, who has been athletics director at Elmhurst, replaces Jimmy Paschal, who is retiring, effective June 30.

FACULTY ATHLETICS
REPRESENTATIVE

Tim Sellnow was named as faculty athletics representative at North Dakota State. Sellnow, a professor of communication, succeeds Velmer Burton.

Wisconsin named Jamie Pollard as deputy athletics director, Doug Beard as associate athletics director for administration, John Chadima as associate athletics director for operations and Steve Malchow as associate athletics director for communications. Pollard has been senior associate athletics director for administration and chief financial officer at the school, and Beard, who has been at Wisconsin for three years, has been an associate athletics director since 2002. Chadima served as the school's administrative assistant for football (1990-97) and football director of operations (2000-03). Malchow, who spent 11 years as Wisconsin's director of men's sports information, has been assistant athletics director for communications for the past two years ... Marquette named Jack Harbaugh as associate athletics director. For the past 14 seasons, Harbaugh has been head football coach at Western Kentucky, where his team captured the 2002 NCAA Division I-AA national championship ... Chris Walker was promoted to associate athletics director at Southern Methodist after spending the past three years as assistant athletics director for communications and broadcasting ... Nebraska promoted Boyd Epley to associate athletics director ... Richmond elevated Allen Fredd to senior associate athletics director for business, Mark Sandy as senior associate athletics director for external operations and David Walsh as senior associate athletics director for internal operations ... Marc Tuttle was promoted to associate athletics director for external affairs at Tulsa. For the past three years, Tuttle has worked as assistant athletics director for operations ... Griffin has been associate athletics director, compliance coordinator, senior woman administrator, head women's basketball coach and sport studies instructor at St. Andrews Presbyterian ... Catrina Gibson was promoted to assistant athletics director, Michael Stevenson was elevated to assistant athletics director for academics and Alex Parker was promoted to assistant athletics director for compliance at Tulsa. Gibson has been with the school for five years, Stevenson has been director of academic services for nine years and Parker has spent the past five years as director of compliance ... Delaware awarded head coach Tina Martin a contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Martin has been head coach at the school for seven years. ... La Salle head coach John Miller signed a contract extension through 2005-06 ... Myndi Hill was hired as head coach at Manhattan after serving as head coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) for the past four seasons. Hill succeeds Sal Buscaglia ... Vermont chose Sharon Dawley as head coach to replace Keith Cieplicki. Dawley was an assistant coach at Dartmouth from 1993 to 1997 and has been associate head coach there since 1997 ... Gail Gilchrest was promoted to head coach at Washington (Maryland). Last season, Gilchrest was an assistant coach.

Women's basketball assistants -- Army selected Lorraine Morrissey as an assistant coach. Morrissey formerly has coached at Pace, Sacred Heart and Stony Brook ... College of Charleston tabbed Valerie Linley as an assistant coach ... Tamika Williams was hired as an assistant coach and Erin Wright was named as director of basketball operations at Ohio State. For the past two seasons, Wright has fulfilled similar duties at Vanderbilt. Williams plays professionally with the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx ... Valparaiso elevated Steve Bruce to associate coach after most recently serving as an assistant coach since the 1999-00 season ... Blair Savage-Lansden was tabbed as an assistant at Belmont to replace Clint Mason. Since the 1994-95 season, Savage-Lansden has worked as an assistant at Memphis ... Men's and women's cross country -- Newberry chose Audrey Ramsey as head women's cross country coach and assistant women's basketball coach.

Field hockey -- Kent State awarded head coach Kerry De Vries a five-year contract extension through the 2008 season. In seven seasons as head coach, De Vries has guided the program to two Mid-American Conference regular-season championships and four conference tournament championships.

Field hockey assistant -- Carla Tagliente was chosen as an assistant coach at Iowa.

Football -- Greg Pscodna resigned after seven seasons as head coach at Defiance to become assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Grand Valley State. Robert Taylor was promoted to head coach at the school to replace Pscodna. Taylor has been with the program since 1997 and has been assistant head coach since 2001 ... Northeastern State head coach Tom Eckert announced his retirement, effective immediately. Eckert joined the program in 1971 as defensive coordinator and has guided the program as head coach since 1987.

Football assistants -- San Diego hired Tim Drevno as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Michael Fisher as tight ends coach and Shaun Murgel as defensive line coach. Drevno, who succeeds Greg Quick, worked as an offensive line coach at Idaho from 2000 to 2002. Fisher has been a graduate assistant coach at Syracuse since 2000 and Murgel has been with Montana Western, serving most recently as linebackers coach ... Marion "Butch" Posey was chosen as defensive coordinator at Delaware State. Posey has been defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at the school since the 2000 season ... Greg Breitbach was appointed as offensive coordinator at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. For the past four seasons, Breitbach has been an assistant coach at Lewis and Clark ... Arizona's Mike Borich resigned as wide receivers coach, effective July 31. Borich had spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Brigham Young ... Alabama appointed Joe Kines as assistant head coach ... Western Carolina chose Donnie Kirkpatrick as wide receivers coach ... Iowa Wesleyan named Brian Kerbel as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Butler tabbed Steve Jones as head women's coach ... Jonathan Burnett resigned as head men's coach at Francis Marion ... Henry Williams resigned as head women's coach at Kalamazoo ... Anderson (South Carolina) hired Danny Neal as head men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's golf assistants -- Don Thompson was added as a part-time assistant men's coach and Mike Bourne was added as a volunteer assistant men's coach at Delaware.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Army named Rob Haberbusch as an assistant coach to replace Mike Warde. Last season, Haberbusch was an assistant at Iona.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- George McCormack was promoted to head men's coach at Williams to succeed Renzie Lamb. For the past three years, McCormack was been assistant men's lacrosse coach, football linebackers coach and assistant professor of physical education.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Scranton chose Linda Drapeau as head women's coach.

Women's rowing -- Nova Southeastern appointed John Gartin as head women's rowing coach. The school is scheduled to begin varsity competition during the 2003-04 school year. For the past two years, Gartin has been master's head women's coach at the San Diego Rowing Club and formerly was a volunteer assistant women's coach and head men's rowing club coach at San Diego State.

Men's soccer -- New Jersey Institute of Technology hired Pedro Lopes as head coach. Lopes, who replaces Ricky Hill, has spent the past six seasons as an assistant at Rutgers ... Roger Williams resigned after one season as head coach at Newberry to become an assistant at VMI ... Bethel (Minnesota) chose Chad Osgood as interim head coach ... Tim Halloran was tabbed as head coach at Kalamazoo ... Northern Kentucky named John Basalyga as head coach to succeed the late John Toebben. Basalyga has been head boys' coach at Turpin (Ohio) High School for 24 years.

Men's soccer assistants -- Rhode Island College selected Don Denham as an assistant coach. Denham is a 2002 graduate of the school and currently is a social studies teacher at Cranston (Rhode Island) High School West ... Stephen Welham was hired as an assistant coach and assistant academic coordinator at Merchant Marine.

Women's soccer -- Emily Kiablick was named as head women's soccer coach, head women's lacrosse coach and events coordinator at Roger Williams. This past season, Kiablick was an assistant lacrosse coach at Springfield ... Aaron Blessing assumed responsibilities as head coach at Indianapolis to replace Chris Johnson. Blessing has been head girls' coach at Bishop Chatard (Indiana) High School since March 2000 ... Coast Guard named Carla DeSantis as head coach ... Kalamazoo promoted Matt Kellogg to head coach. Kellogg was an assistant coach.

Women's soccer assistants -- Angelo State chose Riley Bailey as an assistant. Bailey, who replaces Travis McCorkle, has been head coach at Lambuth for two seasons ... Tony Martin resigned as an assistant at Wheaton (Massachusetts) ... John Ross was added as an assistant coach at North Dakota State, effective August 1. Ross has been assistant coach in the Premier Development League.

Softball -- Ty Cook accepted head coaching responsibilities at Guilford. Cook, who has been head coach at Bluffton for five seasons, takes over for J.J. Edwards and Barb Bausch, interim co-head coaches ... Jennifer Fisher was appointed as head coach at Manhattan ... Dave Burwell resigned as head coach at Missouri-Rolla ... Hardin-Simmons chose Rita Jordan as head coach ... Indianapolis hired Jackie Nebelsiek as head coach. Nebelsiek served as interim co-head coach during the 2003 season.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Randy Duncan was selected as head women's swimming coach at Pfeiffer ... Davidson's Jim Conlon resigned as head coach ... Lyn Maurer relinquished head women's coaching duties at Kalamazoo and assumed responsibilities as assistant men's and women's coach. Maurer also will continue as director of women's athletics. The school named Kathy Milliken as head men's and women's swimming coach. Since 2000, Milliken has served as an assistant at Denison.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Carrie Nixon was chosen as an assistant coach at Clemson.

Men's and women's tennis -- Southwest Texas State's Brenda Burgess resigned as head women's coach ... Art Peterson, head coach at Western Illinois, announced his retirement. Peterson joined the school as head men's tennis coach and athletics ticket manager in 1981. He also has fulfilled tenures as head women's tennis coach and assistant director of athletics for operations ... Constantine Ananiadis was hired as head men's and women's coach at Washington (Maryland). For the last two seasons, Ananiadis, who takes over for Matt Rose, has been an assistant women's coach at Virginia ... Marty Perry was named as head men's and women's coach at Chicago. During the 2002-03 season, Perry was head coach at Colgate.

Men's and women's track and field -- Mike Johnson was promoted to head track and field coach at Western Oregon to succeed the retired John Knight. Johnson, an assistant with the program for two years, formerly was head track and field and cross country coach at Boise State, head cross country coach at Washington and head track and cross country coach at Portland ... Florida State appointed Bob Braman as head track and field coach ... Brett Willmott was hired as head men's and women's coach at Plattsburgh State. Willmott succeeds Scott Slade, who will continue as head men's and women's cross country coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Brian Meeter was named as head women's coach at Loras ... Campbell hired Malinda Ashcraft as head women's coach to replace Gwen Adams, who resigned. For the past three years, Ashcraft, formerly head coach at Samford, has been sport team director of volleyball with Athletes in Action ... Julie Morgan assumed head coaching responsibilities at Hawaii-Hilo. Morgan formerly was head coach at Salt Lake Community College, Illinois State and Utah.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Sarah Chlebana was named as an assistant at Belmont. The 2000 Cal State Sacramento graduate has been coaching at the club level most recently ... Derek Schroeder was tabbed as assistant women's coach at Furman ... Akron added John Rodgers as an assistant coach. For the past nine seasons, Rodgers has been an assistant at Orrville (Ohio) High School.

Wrestling -- Cornell College named Andrew Pariano as head coach. Pariano, who succeeds Curt Heideman, has been an assistant at John Carroll.

STAFF

Athletic trainer -- UMKC named Ted Ferris as head athletic trainer. Since 2000, Ferris has fulfilled responsibilities as head athletic trainer at Highland (Kansas) Community College ... Scott Michel was named as an athletic trainer at Kalamazoo.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Vanessa Rettinger was chosen as an assistant athletic trainer at Anderson (South Carolina). Most recently, Rettinger has been on the athletic training staff at Clemson.

Development -- Southern Colorado hired Todd Kelly as athletics development and major gifts officer. Kelly, who replaces Marcie Reynolds, has been assistant commissioner of media relations and championships at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference ... McNeese State hired Kelly McCall as coordinator of athletics development. McCall was director of donor relations for the athletics fund at Tulane for 11 months.

Fund-raising -- Susan Krilov was named as director of fund-raising and alumni relations at New Orleans. Krilov has been executive director of the Louisiana chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Marketing/promotions assistant -- Delaware hired Josephine A. Finamore as a marketing intern.

Media relations assistant -- Kylee Davis was announced as assistant media relations director/marketing at Emporia State.

Sports information -- Abby Gonzales was selected as interim sports information director at Central (Iowa) to replace Larry Happel, who will take a professional sabbatical during the 2003-04 academic year. Gonzales has been a sports information intern at Southern Illinois.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Jake Moore was appointed as assistant coach for strength and conditioning and Holly Shumard was appointed as strength and conditioning intern at Dartmouth.

CONFERENCES

The American Southwest Conference elected the following as officers and members of the executive committee for 2003-04: Lanny Hall, Howard Payne, president; Franklyn Jenifer, Texas-Dallas, vice-president; Jerry Bawcom, Mary Hardin-Baylor, past president ... Sherry L. Hoppe, president at Austin Peay State, was appointed as president of the Ohio Valley Conference, and Joanne K. Glasser, president at Eastern Kentucky, was selected as conference vice-president for the 2003-04 academic year ... The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference extended the contract of Commissioner Richard J. Ensor through June 30, 2006 ... The Big South Conference renewed internship responsibilities for Chad Cook, who has been a marketing assistant with the conference for the past year ... The Northeast Conference chose Richard Judd as president and Frank Macchiarola as vice-president, effective July 1 ... Jim Andrus and Dan Butterly were promoted to associate commissioners at the Mountain West Conference. ASSOCIATIONS

Tom Starr was appointed as the first executive director of the Fort Worth Bowl. The newly established bowl is slated to be played at TCU's Amon G. Carter Stadium December 23 and will feature teams representing Conference USA and the Big 12 Conference. Starr has been in charge of the marketing programs associated with the MainStay Independence Bowl since 1999.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Kay Hawes was appointed as associate director of public relations for the NCAA. Hawes previously had been assistant director of The NCAA News.

CORRECTIONS

In the May 26 issue of The NCAA News, the institution of baseball coach Calvin Bailey was listed incorrectly. Bailey is coach at West Virginia State College.

REPRIMANDS

The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded Cal State Northridge student-athletes Brandon Esparza and Brian Phillips for misconduct displayed during the first round of the 2002 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. Esparaza and Phillips participated in a postgame altercation, which prompted the committee to issue a public reprimand and withhold transportation and per diem reimbursements to Cal State Northridge for their participation in the championship. The committee also has asked that the student-athletes return their championship participant medallions.

The following NCAA coaches have been selected and approved as members of the USA Track and Field Team USA coaching staff for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games: Men's team selections -- George Williams, St. Augustine's, head coach; Vin Lananna, Stanford, assistant middle distance coach. Anthony Frederick, former Pepperdine basketball forward, died May 29. He was 38. Frederick competed at the school from 1984 to 1986 and went on to play professionally in the NBA before retiring in 1992.

Gregory D. Hennigar, a freshman member of the Penn State football team, died in an automobile accident May 31. Hennigar, 18, red-shirted during the 2002 season.

Texas Tech President Emeritus Grover E. Murray died May 21.

Donald Wilson, former president at Pittsburgh State, died May 16. Wilson was 65.

George H. Williams, former president at American, died May 18. Williams was 85.
