Shaw announces retirement as chancellor

Kenneth A. Shaw, former chair of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and NCAA Basketball Issues Committee, announced plans to retire as chancellor at Syracuse, effective August 1, 2004.

Shaw was named chancellor at Syracuse in 1991 after serving as president of the 26-campus University of Wisconsin system from 1986 to 1991. He also has been chancellor of the Southern Illinois University system (1979-86) as well as president at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (1977-79) and vice-president and dean of the university at Towson (1969-77).

Shaw, a 1986 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award winner, earned a bachelor of science from Illinois State in 1961, a master of education from Illinois-Urbana in 1963 and a doctorate from Purdue in 1966. He plans to take a year-long leave of absence before returning to Syracuse to teach and assume responsibilities assigned by the new chancellor and the board of directors.

Winifred E. Coleman announced plans to retire as president at Saint Joseph (Connecticut), effective June 1, 2004 ... Truman named Barbara B. Dixon as president, effective July 1. Dixon has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Geneseo State ... Southern New Hampshire appointed Paul J. LeBlanc as president. LeBlanc has been president at Marlboro College ... Marylin Newell, president at Andover, was named as president at McIntosh College ... Gettysburg President Gordon A. Haaland announced plans to retire, effective in 2004. Haaland has been president since March 1990 and formerly was president at New Hampshire ... Robert A. Hoover resigned as president at Idaho ... Thomas L. Reuschling stepped down as president at Florida Southern, effective at the end of the 2003-04 academic year.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Olivet chose Dave Price as athletics director ... Richard Laskowski resigned as dean of physical education and athletics at Stony Brook, effective at the end of the spring semester ... Central Oklahoma hired Bill Farley as director of athletics to replace Skip Wagnon, effective June 9. Farley has been director of athletics development at Alabama for five years ... Rutgers-Camden chose Jeffrey L. Dean as director of athletics and recreational services ... Idaho State appointed Jim Senter as director of athletics. Senter has spent 16 years at Idaho fulfilling various responsibilities, including serving as associate athletics director for development for the past three years ... Dave DeHart was selected as director of athletics at Ozarks (Arkansas), effective July 1, to replace Jack Jones. DeHart has been head men's soccer coach at the school since 1999 and will retain head coaching responsibilities ... Maine announced Patrick Nero as director of athletics. Most recently, Nero has fulfilled duties as senior associate athletics director at Miami (Florida).

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS

Maryalyce Jeremiah resigned as senior associate athletics director at Cal State Fullerton to become the school's head women's basketball coach. Jeremiah, who replaces Barbara Ehardt, formerly was head basketball coach at the school from 1985 to 1992.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS

Elizabeth Bowden accepted additional responsibilities as assistant athletics director for administration at St. Andrews Presbyterian. Bowden will continue as assistant women's soccer coach, a position she has held since 2000.

COACHES

Baseball -- Hampden-Sydney's Todd Lampman resigned as head coach ... Brian Embery resigned as head coach at Emporia State, effective at the end of the season.

Men's basketball -- East Tennessee State named Murry Bartow as head coach to replace Ed DeChellis. Bartow was head coach at Alabama-Birmingham from 1996 to 2002 ... Bart Lundy, head coach at Queens (North Carolina) for the past five seasons, was named as head coach at High Point. Lundy succeeds the retired Jerry Steele ... Jacksonville State signed Mike LaPlante to a five-year contract as head coach ... Marquette signed head coach Tom Crean to a multiyear contract. This season, Crean, who has been head coach since 1999, led the school to its first Final Four appearance in 26 years ... Mark Slonaker, head coach at Mercer, agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2007-08. Slonaker, who has been head coach for six seasons, was named 2003 Atlantic Sun Conference coach of the year ... Campbell hired Robbie Laing as head coach to replace Billy Lee. For the past two seasons, Laing has served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas State ... Joe Jones was chosen as head coach at Columbia ... Larry Harrison, head coach at Hartford, signed a two-year contract extension, through April 2007 ... Texas A&M awarded head coach Melvin Watkins with a three-year contract extension. Watkins has led the program for five seasons ... Tom Davis was hired as head coach at Drake to succeed Kurt Kanaskie. Davis formerly was head coach at Iowa for 13 seasons ... Montevallo appointed Danny Young as head coach. Young has been athletics director and head men's basketball coach at Salem International ... Elon named Ernie Nestor as head coach. For the past two seasons, Nestor has served as an assistant at South Carolina ... Derek Thomas was selected as head coach at Western Illinois to succeed Jim Kerwin. Thomas has worked as an assistant coach at UNLV for two seasons ... Weber State awarded head coach Joe Cravens with a four-year contract ... Southern hired Michael Grant as head coach to replace the retired Ben Jobe. For the past six years, Grant has worked as head coach at Central State University ... Bruce Weber was hired as head coach at Illinois to succeed Bill Self. For the past five seasons, Weber has led the program at Southern Illinois ... Bob Hill resigned after four seasons as head coach at Fordham ... Central (Iowa) named Mike Boschee as head coach. Boschee, who succeeds Dan Mason, has been an assistant at Gustavus Adolphus since 1993 in addition to serving as head women's golf coach since 1995 ... Colorado-Colorado Springs head coach Ed Pipes resigned after seven seasons ... North Carolina A&T chose Jerry Eaves as head coach. Eaves, who has been an assistant with the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers, replaces Curtis Hunter ... Matt Painter was elevated to head coach at Southern Illinois to replace Bruce Weber ... Western Michigan promoted Steve Hawkins as head coach to succeed Robert McCullum. Hawkins has been an assistant for three years ... Craig Esherick was awarded a four-year contract extension, through the 2008-09 season, as head coach at Georgetown. Esherick has guided the program since 1999 ... Quinnipiac signed head coach Joe DeSantis to a contract extension through 2007. DeSantis has been head coach for seven seasons ... Tony Shaver was hired as head coach at William and Mary. For the past 17 seasons, Shaver has served as head coach at Hampden-Sydney ... St. Bonaventure appointed Anthony Solomon as head coach to replace Jan van Breda Kolff. Solomon has worked as an assistant at Notre Dame for three years ... Massachusetts Liberal Arts tabbed Devin Gotham as head coach. Gotham has been an assistant at Williams ... Longwood hired Mike Gillian as head coach. Since 1997, Gillian has been an assistant at George Mason.

Men's basketball assistants -- UNLV tabbed Dave Rice as an assistant coach ... Larry Greer, Brian Donoher and Ed Huckaby were added as assistants at Wright State ... Ron Jirsa, Josh Postorino and Frank Smith were added as assistant coaches at Clemson. The school also announced Shaka Smart as coordinator of men's basketball operations ... Michael Young was tabbed as an assistant coach at Houston ... Patrick Sandle was chosen as an assistant at Pittsburgh. For the past two seasons, Sandle has been an assistant at UCLA ... Penn State selected James Johnson as an assistant coach.

Women's basketball -- Cindy Fisher resigned after five seasons as head coach at Wyoming to become an assistant at Nebraska ... Emory selected Christy Thomaskutty as head coach. Thomaskutty, who takes over for Myra Sims, was an assistant at Illinois State for five seasons ... Pam Gohl was named as head coach at Fort Hays State ... Amy Stephens was chosen as head coach at Drake. Last season, Stephens was an assistant at Nebraska and formerly was head coach at Nebraska-Kearney for eight seasons ... Michigan hired Cheryl Burnett as head coach. Burnett served as head coach at Southwest Missouri State for 15 seasons before resigning after the 2001-02 season ... Jason Brink was named as head coach at Newberry to succeed Tommy Love. Brink was head coach at Missouri Baptist University for one season ... St. Francis (New York) named Brenda Milano as head coach. For the past year, Milano was an assistant coach at Hofstra, and she formerly was an assistant women's basketball coach and assistant athletics director for business affairs at the school ... Long Beach State awarded head coaching duties to Mary Hegarty. Hegarty has spent the past 10 years as head coach at Chapman ... Stephany Dunmyer was hired as head coach at Viriginia Wesleyan to replace Joanne Renn, who resigned to become athletics development director at the school. Last season, Dunmyer worked as an assistant at Indiana State ... Keith Cieplicki was chosen as head coach at Syracuse. Cieplicki, who succeeds Marianna Freeman, has been head coach at Vermont for six seasons ... Tisha Hill was hired as head coach at Youngstown State to succeed Ed DiGregorio, who retired. Hill has spent the past two years as an assistant at Ball State ... Concordia-Moorhead appointed Jessica Rahman as head coach ... Agnus Berenato was selected as head coach at Pittsburgh to take over for Traci Waites. Berenato has been at Georgia Tech for 15 years ... Wyoming announced Joe Legerski as head coach, to succeed Cindy Fisher. Legerski has been at Utah for 12 seasons, most recently serving as associate head coach ... Northern Arizona head coach Meg Sanders resigned after seven seasons ... Sal Buscaglia resigned after five seasons as head coach at Manhattan to become head coach at Robert Morris. Buscaglia replaces Lynn Roman.

Women's basketball assistants -- Michigan State added Darren Bennett as an assistant. For the past three seasons, Bennett has worked as an assistant at Syracuse ... Tricia Bader-Binford was hired as an assistant at Utah State. For the past four seasons, Bader-Binford has played in the WNBA and served as head women's basketball coach at Boise State from 1999 to 2001 ... Purdue appointed Katrina Merriweather as an assistant coach ... Reggen Stewart was chosen as an assistant at Wright State ... Jan Jensen assumed responsibilities as associate head coach at Iowa ... Charlotte's Nicole Erickson resigned as an assistant coach ... Middle Tennessee State added Kim Rosamond as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Heath Dudley assumed duties as head cross country and track coach at Jacksonville State.

Football -- Central Florida awarded head coach Mike Kruczek a three-year contract extension through 2007. Kruczek has led the program since 1998 ... Denver Johnson, head coach at Illinois State, signed a four-year contract ... North Carolina State head coach Chuck Amato was awarded a one-year contract extension, through 2007 ... VMI awarded Cal McCombs a three-year contract extension, through 2007. McCombs has been in charge of the progam for three years ... Mike Price was released as head coach at Alabama. Price, formerly head coach at Washington State, took over at Alabama at the end of the 2002-03 season.

Football assistants -- Whittier announced B.J. Hammer as an assistant. Most recently, Hammer has been at Heidelberg ... Michael Faustino was chosen as defensive coordinator at Utica. From 2000 to 2002, Faustino was defensive coordinator, secondary coach and special teams coach at Blackburn ... Kurt Ramler was named as offensive coordinator at Heidelberg. Last season, Ramler worked as quarterbacks coach at St. John's (Minnesota) ... Colgate named Chris Young as wide receivers coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Curt Smyth was chosen as head coach at New England to succeed Vaughn Twaddel, who resigned.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Plattsburgh State named Kevin Houle as interim head women's coach to replace Scott Dockett, who resigned. Houle has been associate coach of the school's men's squad since 1994 ... Garnet Asmundson accepted responsibilities as head women's coach at Hamline.

Men's soccer assistant -- Appalachian State selected Liam Farrell as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Tony Amato was selected as head coach at Rollins to replace Rebecca Craig, who resigned.

Men's and women's squash -- Williams appointed Zafrir Levy as head men's and women's coach. Levy was interim head coach last year.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Kongzheng Li was hired as diving coach at Florida International. For the past seven years, Li has been coaching at Minnesota.

Men's and women's tennis -- Todd Chapman resigned as head men's and women's coach at Texas-Pan American to become co-head tennis coach at Ennis (Texas) High School and assistant manager of the Lion Tennis Center.

Men's and women's track and field -- Connecticut's Jackie Adams resigned as head women's coach ... Norm Ogilvei was appointed as director of men's and women's track and field at Duke, effective July 1.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- NYU appointed Keith Mastronardi as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Stephanie Radecki was tabbed as head coach at St. Leo. Radecki has been an assistant at Augustana (South Dakota) for three years ... Elon named Mary Tendler as head women's coach. Tedler has been an assistant at James Madison for the past three seasons ... Cal Lutheran named Greg Gibbons as head women's coach. Since 2000, Gibbons has worked as head boys' coach and assistant girls' coach at Westlake (California) High School ... Paco Labrador assumed duties as head women's coach at Wittenberg. Labrador, who succeeds Connie Surowicz, has been an assistant at Miami (Ohio) for three years.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Iowa named Melissa Ohta as an assistant women's coach.

Wrestling assistant -- Penn State's Sammie Henson resigned as an assistant coach, effective at the end of the semester, to become an assistant at Army.

STAFF

Compliance -- Todd Hairston was appointed as compliance officer at George Mason. Hairston has been assistant athletics director for compliance at Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Assistant equipment manager -- Matthew Pobieglo was named as football equipment manager at Toledo. Formerly, Pobieglo has been assistant director of facilities and game operations at Vanderbilt.

Strength and conditioning -- Charlotte hired Preston Greene as head strength and conditioning coach to replace J.R. Waller. For the past two years, Greene has served as assistant strength, speed and conditioning coach at Arizona.

NOTABLES

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced the following players and coaches as 2003 selections to the College Football Hall of Fame: Dwayne Nix, Texas A&M-Kingsville, tight end, 1965-68; Willie Richardson, Jackson State, end, 1959-62; Calvin Roberts, Gustavus Aldophus, tackle, 1949-52; Ben Stevenson, Tuskegee, running back, 1924-30; Marino Casem, head coach at Alabama State (1963), Alcorn State (1964-85) and Southern (1987-88, 1992); Roy Kidd, head coach at Eastern Kentucky, 1964-02; and Harold "Tubby" Raymond, head coach at Delaware, 1966-01.

DEATHS

Mike Larrabee, former track and field student-athlete at Southern California, died April 22 of pancreatic cancer. He was 69. Larrabee earned Olympic gold medals for the United States at the 1964 Games in the 400 meters and the 1,600-meter relay.

Former Luther athletics coach and administrator Edsel Schweizer died April 22 of cancer. He was 80. Schweizer joined the school in 1950 as dean of students, football backfield coach, assistant basketball coach, track coach and instructor. After a year of active duty with the Marines, he returned to the school in 1952 to serve as professor of psychology, head football coach, head track coach and assistant basketball coach. Schweizer spent five years in charge of the track and field program and 26 years leading the football squad, in addition to serving as athletics director from 1966 to 1984.

Charles Shain, former president at Connecticut College, died April 13. He was 87.

Former Morehead State men's basketball coach Dick Fick died recently. Fick, 50, had been a part-time assistant at the University of Saint Francis for the past two seasons. Fick spent six years as head coach at Morehead State and also fulfilled assistant coaching stints at Valparaiso for seven seasons and Creighton for six seasons.

Johnny Griffith, former student-athlete and coach at Georgia, died April 28 at the age of 78. Griffith was a member of Georgia's 1946 undefeated football team. He served as an assistant football coach at the school from 1956 to 1960 before completing a three-year tenure as head coach beginning in 1961.
