Mars Hill appoints Ginn as head soccer coach

Mars Hill has selected Scott Ginn as head women's soccer coach. Ginn replaces David Bennett, who resigned.

Most recently, Ginn has served as director of coaching and player development at the Stones River Futbol Club in Smyrna, Tennessee. Before that, he was head women's soccer coach at Middle Tennessee State in 2000 and 2001. He also completed tenures as head women's coach at Barton from 1996 to 1999 and as an assistant women's coach at Berry College from 1995 to 1996. Before a one-year stint as head coach at Forest Park (Georgia) High School in 1993, Ginn was an assistant men's coach at Barton from 1990 to 1992.

Ginn competed on the men's soccer squad at Barton, then at Atlantic Christian College from 1986 to 1989, serving as team captain during his senior season. Ginn has earned a National "A" license from the United States Soccer Federation and an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Victor J. Boschini Jr. was named as chancellor at Texas Christian, effective June 1. Boschini has been president at Illinois State ... Buffalo (New York) President William Greiner announced plans to retire, effective June 30 ... S. Georgia Nugent was chosen as president at Kenyon, effective in July. Nugent has been dean of the Harold W. McGraw Jr. Center for Teaching and Learning at Princeton ... Anthony G. Collins was named as president at Clarkson. Collins has been provost at the school ... Pomona selected David W. Oxtoby as president, effective July 1. Oxtoby, who also will serve as a professor of chemistry, has been dean of physical sciences at Chicago ... Ronald R. Thomas was appointed as president at Puget Sound, effective July 16. Thomas has been college vice-president at Trinity (Connecticut).

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Tennessee Tech's David Larimore announced plans to retire as athletics director ... Don Harnum, athletics director at Susquehanna, announced his retirement, effective this summer. Harnum has guided the athletics department for 24 years, but will continue as head men's golf coach, a position he has held since 1989 ... Bill Zwaan resigned as director of athletics and head football coach at Widener to become head football coach at West Chester. Zwaan, who has been with the school since 1992, has been head football coach and athletics director since 1997 ... Wisconsin's Pat Richter announced his retirement as athletics director, effective April 1, 2004. Richter has served as athletics director since 1989 ... Val Sheley resigned as athletics director at Presbyterian. Sheley, who was the school's first female athletics director, joined the school in 2000 ... Eastern Kentucky named John Shafer as athletics director.

Calli Sanders was chosen as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Iowa State.

David Hansen was promoted to senior associate director of athletics at Southern Mississippi. Hansen has been associate director of athletics for internal operations.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

New Mexico State reassigned Nikita Lowry as an assistant athletics director. Lowry most recently has been head women's basketball coach ... Southern Mississippi elevated Scott Carr to assistant director of athletics for external affairs and sales. Carr was assistant director of athletics for facilities and event management. The school also hired Timothy Atkinson as assistant director of athletics for facilities and event management ... Ross Cobb was chosen as assistant athletics director for business affairs at Texas-San Antonio. Since 2002, Cobb has worked as assistant athletics director for business at Georgia Southern.

COACHES

Women's basketball -- Shawna Lavender was named as interim head coach at Abilene Christian to take over for Wayne Williams, who was granted a leave of absence due to health issues ... Emory head coach Myra Sims resigned as head coach, effective at the end of the season, to become a full-time athletics administrator with the school. Sims joined the school in 1987 as head volleyball coach and established the women's basketball program in 1988-89 ... North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell signed a six-year contract extension, through the 2007-08 season. Hatchell, who has been head coach for 17 years, has guided the program to four Atlantic Coast Conference championships and the 1994 national championship.

Men's and women's cross country -- Curry selected Emer Molloy as head women's coach.

Men's and women's cross country assistant -- Rachelle Roberts was appointed as an assistant cross country and track coach at Greensboro.

Football -- Whittier appointed Greg Carlson as head coach. Carlson formerly was head coach at Wabash ... Oregon State head coach Dennis Erickson resigned to become head coach of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Erickson has led Oregon State to three bowl appearances in four seasons as head coach ... Auburn's Tommy Tuberville signed a new five-year contract to remain head coach. Tuberville has led the school to at least a share of three straight Southeastern Conference Western Division titles ... Oregon State hired Mike Riley as head coach to succeed Dennis Erickson. Riley, who formerly was head coach at the school in 1997-98, has been defensive backs coach for the NFL's New Orleans Saints.

Football assistants -- Northern Illinois selected Matt Canada as offensive coordinator ... Dan Cozzetto was hired as offensive line coach at Washington. Cozzetto has been an assistant at Oregon State for three years ... Kevin Sumlin was chosen as an assistant at Oklahoma. Sumlin had spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Texas A&M before recently becoming Colorado's receivers coach ... Quincy added Nathan Naggi as defensive coordinator. In 2001-02, Naggi worked as a defensive graduate assistant at Oregon ... Arizona tabbed Mike Deal as offensive coordinator and Jeff Hecklinski as quarterbacks coach. Deal has been offensive coordinator for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe and succeeds Rick Dykes. Hecklinski, who is set to replace Scott Pelluer, spent 2001-02 as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Central Missouri State and had been an assistant at Ball State since January ... Utah added Brent Myers as assistant head coach and guards and centers coach. Myers was offensive line coach at Washington for three seasons ... Tim Walton was hired as defensive backs coach at LSU after serving as defensive backs coach at Syracuse for one season. The school also announced Lance Thompson, defensive line coach last year, was named as assistant head coach, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. Derek Dooley, recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach for three years, assumed duties as running backs coach and special teams coordinator ... Washington tabbed John Pettas as quarterbacks coach. Last year, Pettas was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Louisville ... Earnest Collins was selected as cornerbacks coach at Kansas. For the past three seasons, Collins has worked as secondary coach and special teams coach at Northern Colorado. The school also announced assistant coach Clint Bowen will move to safeties coach after serving as running backs coach and Pat Henderson, secondary coach last year, was named as running backs coach ... George Pugh resigned as tight ends coach at Arkansas. Pugh has been with the program since 2001 ... Eastern Washington tabbed Beau Baldwin as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to succeed Timm Rosenbach. For the past seven seasons, Baldwin has worked as an assistant at Central Washington ... New Mexico added Clayton Carlin as defensive backs coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator. Carlin has spent the past two years as secondary coach at Buffalo (New York) ... Ron Burton was appointed as defensive line coach at Air Force. Burton, who replaces Jerome Oliver, has been defensive line coach at Grand Valley State ... Greg McMackin resigned as defensive coordinator at Texas Tech to become associate head coach for defense and linebackers coach for the NFL's San Francisco 49ers ... Air Force selected John Reagan as offensive line coach. Reagan, who replaces Ed Warinner, has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Temple ... Karl Morgan was tabbed as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach and Timothy Edwards was named as linebackers coach at Hampton ... Arkansas chose Clifton Ealy as tight ends coach to succeed George Pugh. Ealy, who formerly was an assistant with the school in 1987 and from 1998 to 2000, has been outside linebackers and free safeties coach at Fayetteville (Arkansas) High School for three years ... Todd Bradford was appointed as receivers coach at BYU. Bradford, who replaces Mike Borich, has been secondary coach and kickoff cover coach at Middle Tennessee State ... Pittsburgh hired Dino Babers as running backs coach. Babers, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M for two seasons, replaces Shawn Simms ... Ashley Anders assumed duties as defensive coordinator in addition to serving as linebackers coach at Valdosta State ... Bill Lazor resigned as offensive coordinator at Buffalo (New York) to become an assistant coach with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons ... Ted Gilmore was added as wide receivers coach at Colorado to replace Kevin Sumlin. Gilmore has been an assistant at Purdue, Wyoming, Kansas and Houston ... Georgia Tech named Wayne Geis as passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach, Patrick Nix as running game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Tommie Robinson as tight ends coach, and Curtis Modkins as running backs coach. The program also announced Jon Tenuta, defensive coordinator, also will coach defensive backs ... Bucknell hired Tripp Merritt as associate head coach and defensive coordinator, Ian Shields as offensive coordinator, Jared Backus as linebackers coach and Steve Perry as defensive backs coach ... Todd Littlejohn was selected as defensive backs coach at Syracuse ... Columbia added John DeFilippo as quarterbacks coach, Sean Ryan as special teams coach, Mike Siravo as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, Tim Weaver as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach and Shawn West as defensive assistant primarily in charge of backs. DeFilippo has been a graduate assistant at Notre Dame for two years, and Ryan has served as a graduate assistant at Boston College. Siravo, formerly a graduate assistant at Boston College, has been in pharmaceutical sales since 2001. For the last four seasons, Weaver has worked as a defensive assistant at Harvard, and for the past two seasons, West has been tight ends coach at Fordham. The school also announced that Rich Skrosky will retain duties as offensive coordinator and part-time assistants Pat Madden, Keith Hellstern, Bob Muckian, Jim Schroeder and graduate assistant Joe Pine will continue with the program.

Men's and women's gymnastics assistant -- Rhode Island College chose Bob Nannig as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Curry appointed Adam Olshansky as an assistant men's coach.

Men's soccer -- Dave Schaller was awarded additional responsibilities as head men's soccer coach. Schaller will continue as head men's lacrosse coach ... Philadelphia U. named Greg Wilson as head coach to succeed John Dunlop, who resigned after nine years. Wilson has been an assistant at Pennsylvania ... Paul Stahlschmidt was chosen as head coach at Appalachian State ... Western Illinois will not renew the contract of head coach Willy Roy ... St. Catherine added Jeremy Driver as head coach. Most recently, Driver has been head boys' varsity coach at Academy of Holy Angels.

Men's soccer assistants -- Doug Fitzgerald was tabbed as an assistant coach at Curry ... Duke added Dan Ensley as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Roy Wilkins, head coach at Richard Stockton, announced plans to retire. In 14 seasons as head coach, Wilkins has led the program to four berths in the NCAA Division III tournament and to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro championship in 1993, 1999 and 2002.

Softball assistants -- Colleen Reid and Gina D'Amaro were added as assistant coaches at Manhattan.

Men's and women's tennis -- Oneonta State awarded additional duties to Ed O'Malley as head men's coach. O'Malley, who succeeds the retired Jim Baker, has been head women's coach for four seasons.

Men's and women's track and field -- Curtis Pittman resigned as head track and field and cross country coach at Bethune-Cookman to become head track and field coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Pittman led the school to five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships. Bethune-Cookman appointed Walter McCoy as interim head coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Babson named Lisa Wallin as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Upper Iowa appointed Julia Fielder as head coach. For the past three seasons, Fielder has worked as an assistant coach at Alma ... Truman State's Qi Wang resigned as head coach to assume head coaching responsibilities at Tennessee Tech. During a two-year tenure as head coach at Truman State, Wang has guided the school to a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division II national championship game.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Charlene Tagaloa was tabbed as an assistant coach at Nebraska ... Southern Mississippi named Kelly Tribble as a full-time assistant. Last season, Tribble was a graduate assistant with the program.

STAFF

Administrative -- Arkansas selected Chris Vaughn as recruiting coordinator.

NATIONAL OFFICE

James Garland was named as assistant director of basketball certification. Garland has been a teacher at the Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice ... Leah Nilsson was promoted to associate director of membership services/Division III governance liaison. Nilsson has been an assistant director of membership services.

CORRECTIONS

The position of Southern Mississippi's Santiago Restrepo was incorrectly listed in the February 17 edition of The NCAA Record. Restrepo was hired as head women's volleyball coach at the school.

NOTABLES

REPRIMANDS

Mark Schubert, head swimming coach at Southern California, and Eddie Reese, head swimming coach at Texas, were chosen as head women's and men's coaches, respectively, for the U.S. swimming teams for the 2004 Olympics ... Herman Frazier, athletics director at Hawaii, was chosen to lead the United States delegation at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

DEATHS

Former Georgia Tech men's basketball coach John "Whack" Hyder died February 9. He was 90. Hyder, a letter-winner in basketball, baseball, cross country and track at the school before graduating in 1937, joined the school as an assistant coach in 1946. He led the program to 292 victories as head coach from 1959 to 1971 and was named as Southeastern Conference coach of the year twice.

Former Arkansas men's basketball player Steve Stroud died of pancreatic cancer. He was 48. Stroud helped Arkansas capture the 1977 Southwest Conference championship with a 16-0 conference mark.

Frederick "Fritz" Pollard Jr., a former three-sport athlete at North Dakota, died recently. He was 87. Pollard, a 1936 Olympic bronze medalist in the 110-meter hurdles, competed as a football running back as well as participated on the track and boxing teams at North Dakota in the late 1930s.

Former Illinois Wesleyan president Lloyd M. Bertholf died January 20. Bertholf was 103.
