Tulsa president makes retirement plans

Dave Auble has announced plans to retire as head wrestling coach at Campbell, effective at the end of the 2003-04 season.

Auble is entering his sixth season in charge of the program. In that time, he has produced three national qualifiers. Before coming to Campbell, he was an assistant coach at North Carolina State for four years. Auble also was an assistant coach at Ithaca, where he helped squads clinch NCAA Division III team championships in 1989, 1990 and 1994. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at UCLA in 1972 and served as head coach at the school from 1976 to 1979. Auble also led the United States team to a first-place finish at the 1977 Pan American Games.

A 1960 graduate of Cornell, Auble was an NCAA Division I national champion in the 123-pound weight class in 1959 and 1960. He was a member of the 1960 and 1964 United States Olympic wrestling teams in the 125.5-pound class. Auble also was a champion at the 1959 Pan American Games and captured the U.S. National Open in 1962.

Chief executive officers

Birmingham-Southern President Neal Berte announced plans to retire in May ... Gloria Bromell-Tinubu was selected as president at Bethune-Cookman. Bromell-Tinubu has been a professor of economics at Spelman ... Gardner-Webb appointed Frank Campbell as president. Most recently, Campbell has been serving in the position on an interim basis ... Franklyn Jenifer, president at Texas-Dallas, announced retirement plans, effective upon the selection of a successor ... William A. Kerr, president at La Roche, resigned, effective next summer ... New Orleans named Timothy P. Ryan, interim executive vice-chancellor and chief operating officer at the school, as chancellor ... Paul J. Zingg was selected as president at Cal State Chico, effective February 1. Zingg has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Cal Poly.

Directors of athletics

American chose Joni Comstock as director of athletics and recreation. For the past three years, Comstock has been athletics director at North Carolina-Asheville ... Mary Wessely was elevated to acting athletics director at Rutgers-Newark to succeed the late John Adams. Wessely has been senior woman administrator and associate athletics director since July 2001 ... Emmanuel hired Pam Roecker as director of athletics and recreation. Roecker has been an associate athletics director at Wagner ... Barbara Hedges, director of athletics at Washington, was awarded a nine-month contract extension through June 30, 2004 ... McMurry's Steve Keenum relinquished duties as athletics director, but will continue as head football coach at the school. Keenum has been fulfilling the dual capacity since March 2001.

Senior woman administrators

Leslie Faber, senior woman administrator and head women's soccer coach at Morehead State, resigned. Faber has guided the women's soccer team since 1998 ... Tricia Turley was promoted to associate athletics director for compliance and enrollment services and senior woman administrator at Northeastern. Turley has been assistant athletics director for compliance at the school since July 2001.

Associate directors of athletics

John Stallings was promoted to acting associate athletics director at Rutgers-Newark. Stallings has been assistant athletics director and sports information director since December 2000 ... Fresno State named Desiree Reed-Francois as associate athletics director for compliance and student services. Reed-Francois has been associate athletics director at Santa Clara for the past year.

Assistant directors of athletics

Stanford elevated Gary Migdol and Jamie Zaninovich to senior assistant athletics directors. Migdol has been with the school for 19 years and most recently has been assistant athletics director for media relations since 1996. For the past seven years, Zaninovich has been an assistant athletics director and formerly was marketing and operations director for men's basketball at the school from 1996 to 1999 ... Texas-Pan American promoted Jim Lancaster to assistant athletics director for sports medicine. Lancaster has served as head athletic trainer at the school for 22 years ... Stan Nance was hired as assistant athletics director/recruiting coordinator at Emerson. Nance has been director of basketball operations at Rutgers.

Coaches

Baseball assistants -- Greensboro added Andrew Fleischacker as an assistant coach. From 1991 through 2003, Fleischacker, who currently attends the school, played and coached professionally in Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland ... Mike Smith assumed duties as an assistant coach at Shenandoah. Smith has been with Clarke County (Virginia) High School for eight years and has served as head coach for the last three years.

Men's basketball -- Kentucky State released head coach Winston Bennett, who has guided the program since May 2000.

Men's basketball assistants -- Roger Williams hired Matthew Chittim as an assistant coach. Chittim is a May 2003 graduate of Vassar, where he was a four-year letter-winner on the men's basketball team and captain of the squad as a senior ... Stephen Stewart was named as an assistant coach at Albany (New York). Since 2001, Stewart has been an assistant at Coppin State ... Clay McKnight was selected as director of men's basketball operations at Oregon State. For the past three seasons, McKnight, who takes over for Ken Carrillo, has been director of operations at Syracuse.

Women's basketball -- Melissa Hart was selected as head coach at Emerson. For the past six years, Hart has worked as head women's basketball coach and head women's soccer coach at MIT.

Women's basketball assistants -- Albany (New York) named Liz Sahin as an assistant coach and Kristan Pelletier as director of basketball operations ... Polytechnic (New York) chose Freddy DeJesus as associate head coach and sports information director ... Stephanie Trahan and Jamees Wright were added as assistants at Bernard Baruch ... Rhode Island College selected Christine Donilon as an assistant coach. Donilon has worked for the Providence (Rhode Island) recreation department since 1988 ... New Mexico hired Mike Terry as an assistant coach to succeed Brian O'Neill. Terry has been co-head coach at The Benjamin School in Florida, where he helped guide squads to three state championships.

Field hockey -- Jayne Longacre was appointed as head coach at DeSales ... The contract of Albany (New York) head coach Deborah Fiore will not be renewed. Fiore has led the program for nine seasons.

Football -- Eastern Michigan released head coach Jeff Woodruff. Assistant head coach and running backs coach Al Lavan was appointed as interim head coach ... Mike Kruczek was released as head coach at Central Florida. Kruczek was offensive coordinator for the program for 13 seasons before serving as head coach for the past six seasons. The school named assistant head coach Alan Gooch as interim coach ... Gary Keller, head coach at Ashland, will not return next season ... Dick Farley retired as head coach at Williams. Farley joined the school in 1971 as an assistant football coach and assistant track and field coach and has been head football coach since 1987.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Massachusetts head coach Don Cahoon signed a four-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Andrew Will was selected as interim assistant men's coach at Rensselaer.

Men's and women's rowing -- Susan Saint Sing was chosen as head coach at Lynn.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- Alison Derrick was hired as an assistant women's coach at Northeastern. Derrick has been an assistant at Smith since 2001.

Men's and women's skiing assistant -- Elizabeth Hollenbach was chosen as an assistant Nordic coach at Vermont.

Men's soccer -- Emerson added Jared Scarpaci as head coach. Most recently, Scarpaci has served as an assistant coach at Salem State ... Mike Freitag was appointed as head coach at Indiana ... Stony Brook's Scott Dean resigned as head coach.

Women's soccer -- Ken Alberta resigned as head coach at Waynesburg ... Nevada will not renew the contract of head coach Dang Pibulvech, who has led the program since December 1999.

Softball -- Bluffton named Holly Spann as head coach.

Softball assistants -- Michelle Boone was announced as an assistant coach at Pennsylvania ... Theresa Walker assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Greensboro. Walker is a 2003 graduate of Temple, where she was a member of the softball squad.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Craig Strong accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Bucknell. Strong most recently spent one year at Albright.

Men's and women's tennis -- Louisiana-Monroe's Maria Zavala resigned as head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- McNeese State's Steve Baker resigned as head coach. Baker has been with the school since 1997.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Hunter appointed Ray Bello and Jorge DeLaRosa as co-head men's coaches to replace Lauren Caiaccia. Bello, who most recently served one season as an assistant women's coach at the school, was a 2003 graduate of Hunter, where he was a member of the volleyball team. DeLaRosa has been an assistant men's coach at the school for one season ... Christopher Feliciano was promoted to head men's coach at New Jersey City, replacing Ofelia Pancarician, head men's and women's coach for the past two years. Feliciano, who most recently has been recruiting coordinator for the program, is a 2003 graduate of the school and was a four-year member of the men's volleyball squad. Pancarician will continue as head women's coach and as an assistant men's coach ... Irma Munoz resigned as head women's coach at Farmingdale State.

Wrestling assistants -- Rob Hjerling was selected as a volunteer assistant coach at Citadel ... Roger Williams announced Cory DeBias as an assistant coach. DeBias is completing his final semester toward a bachelor's degree from the school and was a member of the wrestling squad.

Staff

Assistant athletic trainer -- Eric Hansen was named as an assistant athletic trainer at Hood.

Marketing/promotions -- Wright State named Samantha Ault as sports promotions director. Ault has been group sales coordinator for the school's Ervin J. Nutter Center since 2002.

Operations -- Roger Crosley was hired as coordinator of athletics operations at Emerson. For the past 17 years, Crosley has been director of sports information and athletics communications at MIT.

Sports information -- John Jordan was announced as sports information director at Palm Beach Atlantic. Most recently, Jordan has been interim sports information director at Bates ... Brian Rose resigned after five years as sports information director at Bethany (West Virginia) to assume the same position at Carnegie Mellon, where he replaces Bethany McClam.

Conferences

The Missouri Valley Conference chose Scott Winter as assistant director of operations. Winter was a tournament operations intern with the American Junior Golf Association this past summer.

Associations

The American Volleyball Coaches Association elected the following three individuals to its board of directors: Kim Sudbeck, head coach at Augustana (South Dakota); Angie Fincannon, head coach at Taylor; and Patti Perone, director of the Southern Tier Volleyball Club. Sudbeck, Fincannon and Perone were incumbents and will now serve an additional three years on the board.

Correction

The last name of University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, cross country runner Alistair Cragg was reported incorrectly in a Division I Men's Cross Country Championships preview in the November 10 issue of The NCAA News.

DEATHS

Former Fordham football student-athlete John Patrick Conroy died recently. He was 95. As a member of the Fordham football squad in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Conroy competed at tackle and as an end. He also played on the school's basketball team in 1930-31.

Dee Andros, former head football coach at Oregon State, died October 22. Andros was 79.

John D. Sanders III, assistant commissioner for operations and championships at the Missouri Valley Conference, died in an automobile accident November 1. He was 28. Sanders, who was a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Committee, was promoted to assistant commissioner in July of this year after having served as director of operations since 1999.

Former Tennessee track student-athlete Scott Hartman died November 12. He was 35. As a 19-year-old freshman, Hartman was struck in the head by a 16-pound steel field hammer during a warm-up period of a meet and never fully recovered from the injury.

Mark N. Christensen, former chancellor at UC Santa Cruz, died October 2. Christensen was 73.
