UCLA selects Dorrell as head football coach

UCLA has hired Karl Dorrell as head football coach. Dorrell succeeds Bob Toledo and interim head coach Ed Kezirian.

For the past three years, Dorrell has been wide receivers coach for the NFL's Denver Broncos. Before his tenure with Denver, Dorrell completed a one-year stint as offensive coordinator at Washington. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UCLA in 1988. Since then, he has fulfilled two terms of service at Colorado -- as receivers coach in 1992-93 and as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach from 1995-98 -- in addition to making stops as receivers coach at Central Florida (1989), offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Northern Arizona (1990-91) and receivers coach at Arizona State (1994).

Dorrell was a member of three victorious Rose Bowl teams in 1982, 1983 and 1985 as a wide receiver at UCLA before graduating after the 1986 season.

East Tennessee State's Todd Stansbury resigned as athletics director to become executive associate athletics director for internal operations at Oregon State ... Jeffery Segrave, interim athletics director at Skidmore, was named as athletics director ... Rutgers-Camden Athletics Director Edward Cialella announced plans to retire. The school chose Jeff Dean as interim athletics director.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Christine Smith announced plans to retire as senior woman administrator at Rutgers-Camden.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

American elevated Allison Housman to assistant athletics director for compliance ... Minnesota-Mankato promoted Paul Allan to assistant athletics director/communications. Allan has served as sports information director for the past 17 years ... Leonard Clark was chosen as assistant athletics director for special projects at Wichita State and executive director of the Wichita State Varsity Club. Clark joined the school in 1998 and most recently has been assistant general counsel for the university.

COACHES

Baseball assistant -- Mike Reid resigned as an assistant coach at Hofstra.

Football -- Anderson head coach Steve Barrows resigned to assume responsibilities as defensive coordinator at Charleston Southern. Barrows led the program for four seasons ... Steve Roberts, head coach at Arkansas State, was awarded a two-year contract extension through 2007. Roberts just completed his first season as head coach at the school ... Millsaps tabbed David Saunders as head coach ... Alabama hired Mike Price as head coach to succeed Dennis Franchione. For the past 14 years, Price has served as head coach at Washington State ... Brady Hoke was chosen as head coach at Ball State. Hoke has been an assistant at Michigan for the past eight seasons, most recently fulfilling associate head coaching and defensive line coaching duties ... Rutgers awarded Greg Schiano, head coach, a two-year contract extension through the 2007 season. Schiano has led the program for two seasons ... Steve Kragthorpe was selected as head coach at Tulsa. For the past two seasons, Kragthorpe, who replaces Keith Burns, has been quarterbacks coach for the NFL's Buffalo Bills ... Washington State promoted Bill Doba to head coach. Doba, who succeeds Mike Price, has worked as an assistant at Washington State since 1989 and has been defensive coordinator since 1994. ... Newberry selected Zak Willis as head coach. Willis has been head coach at Pikeville College for three years ... Courtney Messingham was hired as head coach at Upper Iowa. Messingham has worked as an assistant at Southwest Missouri State for four seasons and has served as offensive coordinator for the past three.

Football assistants -- Rick Whitt was released as defensive coordinator and Charlie Coe was released as receivers coach at Memphis ... Minnesota State-Mankato chose Brooks Hollingsworth as offensive coordinator. For the past six years, Hollingsworth has been an assistant at Central Arkansas ... Utah added Billy Gonzales as wide receivers coach, Dan Mullen as quarterbacks coach, John Hevesy as offensive tackles and tight ends coach and Greg Studrawa as offensive guards and centers coach. Kyle Whittingham and Bill Busch will continue at the school as defensive coodinator and safeties coach, respectively. Whittingham has been with the program since 1994 and Busch has been safeties coach for two seasons ... Houston hired Mike Harris as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach and Dave Aranda as linebackers coach. Harris has been defensive line coach and Aranda has been a graduate assisant at Texas Tech ... Baylor chose John Goodner as defensive coordinator, Chris Lancaster as offensive line coach, Tom Adams as defensive tackles coach, Larry Hoefer as safeties coach, Gerald Carr as assistant head coach, Brent Pease as offensive coordinator, Mark Nelson as special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach, Harold Jackson as wide receivers coach and Wesley McGriff as cornerbacks coach. All nine most recently held similar posts at Kentucky.

Men's and women's golf -- Old Dominion appointed Pat Kotten as head women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition in fall 2003. Kotten has been head men's and women's coach at UMBC ... Matt Smith accepted head men's coaching duties at Otterbein. Smith is an assistant golf pro at The Willows Golf Club in Ohio ... Longwood hired Lane Pace as head women's coach. Since June 2001, Pace has served as an assistant men's and women's coach at Jacksonville.

Men's and women's skiing assistant -- Coreen Woodbury was tabbed as an assistant Nordic ski coach at New Hampshire.

Men's soccer -- Westfield State head coach Paul Whalley resigned after six years.

Women's soccer -- Virginia Tech named Kelly Cagle as head coach. Cagle, currently member of the WUSA's Atlanta Beat, was an assistant coach at Wake Forest from 1997-01 and has been coaching in the Atlanta Youth Soccer Association during the past year.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Pete Hoyer resigned as head women's coach at Dayton ... Kevin Rode was tabbed as an assistant coach at Transylvania.

STAFF

Academic services -- Wendy Sewack was hired as athletics academic coordinator at Winthrop. Sewack was an intern in the couseling program for intercollegiate athletics at Connecticut.

Athletic trainer -- Saint Mary's (California) named Ryan Cobbs as a head athletic trainer. For the past year, Cobb, who takes over for Chris Jacobson, has been an assistant athletic trainer at Vanderbilt.
