St. Cloud State choses Mickow as head coach

St. Cloud State has named Patricia Mickow as head volleyball coach. Mickow succeeds Dianne Glowatzke, who retired at the end of the 2002 season after 26 seasons.

Mickow joins St. Cloud State after working one season as head coach at Bemidji State. Before her tenure there, she spent two seasons leading the program at Mayville State University. She also was volleyball, basketball and softball coach at NAIA Mount Marty College from 1988 to 1994 and from 1996 to 2000. In addition to completing coaching stints at the high-school level, Mickow also was head volleyball coach at St. Mary's (Minnesota) for the 1994-95 season.

Mickow is a 1986 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus and earned a master of science degree in physical education from Winona State in 1992.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

David A. Bryant was named as president at Oklahoma Panhandle State, effective March 1. Bryant has been vice-provost and director of agriculture extension services and professor of animal and range sciences at Montana State ... F. Dominic Dottavio was chosen as president at Heidelberg, effective July 1, after most recently serving as dean and director of Ohio State University at Marion ... Cornell appointed Jeffrey S. Lehman as president, effective July 1. Lehman has been dean of the law school at Michigan and professor of law and public policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy ... Joseph M. McShane was named as president at Fordham, effective July 1. McShane has been president at Scranton ... James Ramsey was selected as president at Louisville. Ramsey has been interim president.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Dave Klostreich was named as director of athletics at Bethel (Minnesota). Klostreich has been men's athletics director at the school ... Edward C. Cialella retired December 31 as director of athletics and recreational services at Rutgers-Camden. Cialella was director of recreation and intramurals from 1969 to 1997 before assuming athletics director responsibilities in 1998. He also coached men's and women's basketball and tennis. The school announced Jeff Dean as interim athletics director. Dean joined the school in 1993 and has been assistant director of recreational services since 1999 ... Nebraska hired Steve Pederson as director of athletics. Pederson, who replaces Bill Byrne, has been athletics director at Pittsburgh since 1996 ... Nancy Van Hoozier relinquished responsibilities as director of women's athletics and Irv Sigler relinquished responsibilities as director of men's athletics at Olivet. Tom Shaw, currently vice-president for enrollment management, will serve as interim athletics director. Van Hoozier will continue to serve as chair of the health, physical education, recreation and sports department. Sigler will retain duties as head football coach ... New Orleans named Jim Miller as athletics director to replace Robert Brown, who was elevated last year to vice chancellor for governmental and community affairs. Miller, formerly an executive with several NFL teams, currently serves as a business development consultant with SMG, which manages the SuperDome and the New Orleans Arena ... Ron Whitson was hired as director of athletics at Transylvania. Whitson, who succeeds Brian Austin, has been interim athletics director since September and is program director and a professor in physical education at the school.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Bethel (Minnesota) announced Gretchen Hansen as senior woman administrator. Hansen serves as head women's volleyball coach ... Christine Smith, senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for women at Rutgers-Camden, retired December 31. Smith, who has been with the school since 1973, coached softball and established the school's field hockey and women's basketball programs.

Cal Kuphall resigned after seven years as associate athletics director at Ball State ... Southern Methodist promoted Shawn Heilbron to associate athletics director for marketing and sales and promoted David Miller to associate athletics director for facilities and operations.

Karen Borbee was appointed as an assistant director of athletics at Swarthmore. Borbee, who also served as head field hockey coach from 1996 to 2001, will continue as head women's lacrosse coach ... Scott Arey was tabbed as assistant athletics director for facilities at Northwestern.

COACHES

Baseball -- Bethel (Minnesota) hired Greg Indlecoffer as head coach to succeed Ken Neuhaus ... Bridgeport chose John Anquillare as head coach.

Baseball assistants -- Lander tabbed Chris Cook as an assistant coach. Cook formerly coached at Winthrop, Collin County (Texas) Community College and Rockford ... Brandon Belanger was appointed as an assistant at Tulane.

Men's basketball -- Tennessee State head coach Nolan Richardson III resigned. Assistant coach Hosea Lewis was named as interim head coach.

Women's basketball -- Jon Herbrechtsmeyer was appointed as head coach at Bethel (Minnesota) to succeed Chris Hester, who resigned as women's athletics director and head women's basketball coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Christine Kloiber was chosen as head cross country and track and field coach at Regis (Massachusetts). Kloiber succeeds Sinead Delahunty Evans.

Football -- Jackson State selected James Bell as head coach ... Rich Rodriguez was awarded a seven-year contract extension through the 2009 season as head coach at West Virginia. Rodriguez has guided the program for two years ... Central Oklahoma hired Chuck Langston as head coach to replace Gary Howard. For the past three years, Langston has been head coach at Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College ... California awarded head coach Jeff Tedford a new five-year contract ... Gregg Brandon was promoted to head coach at Bowling Green. Brandon, who succeeds Urban Meyer, has been offensive coordinator ... Michigan State named John L. Smith as head coach to replace Bobby Williams and interim head coach Morris Watts. For the past five years, Smith has been head coach at Louisville ... Georgia's Mark Richt agreed to an eight-year contract extension through 2010. Richt, who has led the team for two years, guided the school to the Southeastern Conference championship and an appearance in the Sugar Bowl this season ... Montana chose Bobby Hauck as head coach. Hauck, who has been an assistant at Washington for the past four years, replaces Joe Glenn ... John Thompson was hired as head coach at East Carolina to succeed Steve Logan. Thompson served as defensive coordinator at Florida this season ... Saint Mary's (California) selected Vincent White as head coach to replace Tim Landis. For the past two seasons, White has been running backs coach at Utah ... Concordia (Illinois) selected Jeff Hynes as head coach to succeed Brian Baker-Watson. Hynes has been offensive coordinator at Lakeland since 1993 and has fulfilled additional responsibilities as head coach since 1999 ... Tuskegee head coach Rick Comegy will continue with the school and will not accept the head coaching position at Norfolk State ... Dan McCarney, head coach at Iowa State, was awarded a new contract through 2010. In eight years as head coach, McCarney has led the team to three postseason appearances ... Illinois College's Tom Rowland resigned as head coach but will continue as head wrestling coach and associate professor of physical education. Rowland has been head football coach since 1998 and has led the wrestling program for 29 seasons ... Todd Glaser was named as head coach at Marietta. Most recently, Glaser has been defensive coordinator at Wisconsin-Eau Claire ... Bob Shoop was hired as head coach at Columbia to replace Ray Tellier. Shoop has been defensive backfield coach at Boston College since 1999 ... Prairie View chose C.L. Whittington as head coach. Whittington, who formerly spent five seasons as an assistant at the school, replaces Larry Dorsey.

Football assistants -- Bo Pelini assumed defensive coordinator responsibilities at Nebraska. Pelini, who replaces Craig Bohl, has spent the past three years as linebackers coach for the NFL's Green Bay Packers ... UCLA chose Eric Bieniemy as running backs coach and Jon Embree as wide receivers coach. Bieniemy has been running backs coach at Colorado for two seasons and Embree has been an assistant at Colorado for 10 seasons. UCLA also announced Gary Bernardi will continue as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, Don Johnson will retain responsibilities as defensive line coach and Mark Weber will continue as offensive line coach. Bernardi has been with the program for nine years and Johnson has been at the school for three years. Weber has been in charge of the offense for six years. UCLA also tabbed Larry Kerr as defensive coordinator and Steve Axman as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. For the past 10 seasons, Kerr has been defensive coordinator at Colorado State. Axman has been quarterbacks coach at Washington for four years and has been assistant head coach for the past two years ... Wyoming appointed Mike Breske as defensive coordinator and secondary coach, Billy Cockhill as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Chad Germer as offensive line coach, Chris Knutsen as special teams coach, Harvey Patton as tight ends coach, Lance Robinson as defensive line coach, Ron Wisniewski as wide receivers coach, Bryan Applewhite as running backs coach and Marty English as linebackers coach. Breske, Cockhill, Germer, Knutsen, Patton, Robinson and Wisniewski most recently served as assistants at Montana. Applewhite and English were assistant coaches at Northern Colorado. Wyoming also announced Don Julian will continue with the program as director of football operations after most recently working as backfield coach ... Charlie Strong was named as defensive coordinator at Florida to replace John Thompson. Strong has been defensive coordinator at South Carolina ... East Carolina selected Jerry Odom as defensive coordinator. Odom served as linebackers coach at Florida this past season. The school also announced Jerry McManus will continue as running backs coach, a position he has fulfilled for the past seven seasons ... Michigan State hired Dave Baldwin as offensive coordinator. For the past year, Baldwin has served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Baylor ... Ron Roberts resigned as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Tusculum to assume similar duties at Southwest Texas State. Roberts has been with Tusculum since 1998 ... Tim LeRoy was added as defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Nebraska Wesleyan. LeRoy takes over for Jon Bostick, who resigned to become general manager for the National Indoor Football League's Omaha Beef ... Angelo State tabbed Hank McClung as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Since 2000, McClung, who replaces the retired Freddy Jonas, has been offensive line coach at Drake ... Chris Cosh was promoted to defensive coordinator at South Carolina to succeed Charlie Strong. Cosh has been linebackers coach since the end of the 1998 season ... New Mexico added Osia Lewis as defensive coordinator to replace Bronco Mendenhall. For the past six seasons, Lewis has worked as an assistant at Illinois, most recently as linebackers coach ... Sparky Woods was named as tight ends coach at Alabama ... Colorado selected Kevin Sumlin as wide receivers coach. Sumlin, who replaces Jon Embree, has been receivers coach at Texas A&M ... Hugh Nall was promoted to offensive coordinator at Auburn. Nall has been offensive line coach. The school also tabbed Steve Ensminger as quarterbacks coach ... Stacy Searels assumed duties as offensive line coach at LSU. For the past two seasons, Searels has been offensive line coach at Cincinnati ... George Yarno was hired as offensive line coach at Washington State. Yarno has been an assistant at LSU for two seasons ... Louisville chose Jeff Brohm as quarterbacks coach, Mike Gillhamer as defensive coordinator, Paul Petrino as offensive coordinator, Mike Summers as offensive line coach, Joe Whitt, Jr. as cornerbacks coach and Kevin Wolthausen as linebackers coach ... Doug Nussmeier was selected as quarterbacks coach at Michigan State ... Kalani Sitake was hired as running backs coach at Southern Utah. Sitake spent last season as a graduate assistant coach at Brigham Young ... Tulsa named Todd Graham as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, Charlie Stubbs as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Bob Schultz as special teams and receivers coach, Danny Phillips as defensive line coach, Spencer Leftwich as offensive line coach, and Keith Patterson as linebackers coach. Graham was co-defensive coordinator at West Virginia, Stubbs was offensive coordinator at UNLV and Schultz was offensive coordinator at Tarleton State. Phillips most recently has worked as a graduate assistant at West Virginia, Leftwich has served as offensive line coach at North Texas and Patterson formerly was coaching at the high-school level. TiAndre Sanders will continue as running backs coach, Matt Wells will retain duties as tight ends coach and assume duties as recruiting coordinator, and Sammy Lawanson will continue as defensive backs coach ... Utah chose Mike Sanford as offensive coordinator, Mike Tuiasosopo as defensive tackles coach and Kurt Barber as defensive ends coach. Sanford has been an assistant at Stanford, and Tuiasosopo has worked as defensive line coach at Nevada for three seasons. For the past two years, Barber has been defensive line coach at Kent State ... Ken Greene was tabbed as secondary coach at Washington State after serving as an assistant at Purdue for the past three seasons ... Ron McBride was hired as linebackers coach at Kentucky. McBride most recently was released after 13 seasons as head coach at Utah ... Milt Tenopir retired after 29 years as offensive line coach and Dan Young retired after 17 seasons as assistant offensive line coach and kickers coach at Nebraska. The school added Barney Cotton as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Scott Downing as recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, and Marvin Sanders as secondary coach. Cotton was offensive coordinator at New Mexico State last season, and Downing has worked as assistant head coach at Purdue. Sanders was defensive secondary coach at Colorado State for two years. Tim Albin, a graduate assistant at Nebraska last season, was elevated to passing game coordinator and running backs coach. Turner Gill, quarterbacks coach, was awarded additional responsibilities as assistant head coach. Additionally, Dave Gillespie relinquished duties as running backs coach to become director of football operations ... Gerry Gdowski was promoted to offensive coordinator at New Mexico State to replace Barney Cotton. Gdowski will continue as quarterbacks coach. The school also announced the selection of Kevin Lightner as offensive line coach. For the past two seasons, Lightner has served as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Western Kentucky ... Todd Eagen resigned as defensive line coach at Northern Iowa to become defensive coordinator at Upper Iowa...Texas named Mike Haywood as running backs coach and assistant special teams coordinator. Haywood has spent the past eight seasons as an assistant at LSU. The school also promoted receivers coach Darry Drake to associate head coach and elevated secondary coach Duane Akina to assistant head coach. Bruce Chambers, running backs coach for the past five years, will move to tight ends coach, and Mac McWhorter, tight ends coach and offensive tackles coach last season, will move to offensive line coach. Tim Nunez was released as offensive line coach ... Bruce Snyder was hired as an offensive assistant coach at UNLV. Snyder, who has been a broadcaster for the past two seasons, formerly was head coach at California and Arizona State. The school also announced David Robinson, an assistant for the past two years, will move to linebackers coach ... LSU chose Travis Jones as a defensive assistant coach. Jones has been an assistant at Kansas for two years ... Mike Barry resigned after five years as offensive line coach at Tennessee ... Florida added Bill Miller as linebackers coach to replace Jerry Odom. Miller was defensive coordinator at Michigan State from 1999 to 2002 ... Jeff Casteel was awarded additional responsibilities as defensive coordinator at West Virginia. Casteel, who succeeds Todd Graham with whom he shared coordinator duties last season, will continue as linebackers coach ... Morris Watts was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Mississippi State. Watts, who was offensive coach at Michigan State for the past four seasons, succeeds Sparky Woods. The school also announced Steve Campbell was selected as offensive line coach. Campbell spent last year as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Middle Tennessee State ... Texas Tech hired Bill Bedenbaugh as running backs coach. Bedenbaugh, who replaces Art Briles, has been a graduate assistant at the school for three seasons ... Southern Mississippi added Rip Scherer as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and David Warner as wide receivers coach. Also, Mitch Rodrigue will move to offensive line coach ... Kent State selected Doug Martin as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Martin has been offensive coordinator at East Carolina for seven years. The school also will move Mike Drake, offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, to defensive assistant coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Seton Hall head men's coach Clark Holle resigned.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Hillary Barrett was named as head women's lacrosse coach and assistant women's soccer coach at Lycoming ... Le Moyne hired Lauren O'Connor as head women's coach. O'Connor has been head coach at the high-school level since 2000.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Roanoke tabbed Stephanie Masucci as an assistant women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach. Masucci takes over for Kate Scattergood ... Aimee Vaughan was chosen as graduate assistant women's coach and Catherine Mellon was chosen as part-time assistant women's coach at Delaware.

Men's and women's rowing assistants -- Barb Ferrell and Rob Page were added as part-time assistant women's coaches at Delaware.

Men's soccer -- Tim Donahue was named as head coach at Becker. Donahue replaces Gary Rudman, who resigned after seven years as head men's soccer coach and five years as head men's tennis coach ... Muhlenberg promoted Sean Topping to head coach. As interim head coach during the 2002 season, Topping led the school to a Centennial Conference playoff berth.

Women's soccer -- Tim Collins was tabbed as head coach at Washburn.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Aaron Mahaney was appointed as an assistant at Lafayette.

Men's and women's tennis -- James Matulis was selected as head coach at Becker, replacing Gary Rudman ... Hunter hired Mel Kerper as head men's coach. Kerper, who succeeds Mitch Polstein, has been head women's tennis coach at Kingsborough (New York) Community College for the past year ... Jeff Kutac was chosen as head men's tennis coach at Florida Southern. Most recently, Kutac, who takes over for Tim Gray, has been head men's coach at DePaul ... Phil Baboulis was selected as head women's coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Men's and women's track and field -- Josh Buchholtz was elevated to head men's track and field and cross country coach at Wisconsin-La Crosse. For the past four seasons, Buchholtz has worked as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- McNeese State tabbed Russ Butler as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Pacific (Oregon) head coach Bradley Jones resigned. Jones served as an assistant coach for one season before becoming head coach in 1999 ... Gordon's Valerie Gin announced her retirement after 13 seasons as head coach, but will continue at the school as a faculty member in the recreation and leisure studies department ... Kimberly Feltner resigned as head women's coach at Staten Island ... Guilford hired Glenda Parrish as head women's coach. Parrish, who replaces Chuck McCracken, has been head coach at Lenior-Rhyne for eight years ... Jerry Angle was chosen as head women's coach at Aurora.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Chuck Waddington was selected as an assistant women's coach at Florida Southern to replace Rob Holley. For the past six years, Waddington has been head coach at Bishop Verot (Florida) High School ... Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Joe Goble resigned. Goble has been with the program since June 2001.

STAFF

Administrative -- Pat Logsdon was named as director of athletics administration at Nebraska.

Athletic trainer -- Southern Vermont appointed Jason S. Bolgos as head athletic trainer. Bolgos was at Thomas More.

Business manager -- Saint Rose tabbed Jason Doviak, a 2002 graduate of Cortland State, as athletics business manager.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Justin Cecil was selected as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Ball State. Cecil has been a graduate assistant for strength and conditioning at the school from fall of 2000 through spring of 2002.

CONFERENCES

The Southland Conference chose Tom Burnett as commissioner, effective February 1. Burnett, who replaces Greg Sankey, has been an associate commissioner with the Sun Belt Conference ... Jim McCullough retired as associate commissioner at the Southeastern Conference. McCollough has been with the league since 1982 and formerly was commissioner of the Gulf South Conference. The conference also announced the selection of Gil Grimes as an assistant commissioner. Grimes has been with the Southern Conference for seven years and has spent the past four as associate commissioner ... The Sunshine State Conference appointed Rob Broussard as membership services liaison. Broussard has been working in the sports information office at Louisiana-Lafayette for four years.

ASSOCIATIONS

Marc S. Kidd resigned as president of Host Communications Inc. to establish his own consulting group, The Kidd Group. Kidd has been with Host since 1982 ... The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the organization that governs all international basketball competitions, has appointed several USA Basketball representatives to four-year terms on various commissions. Tom Jernstedt, president of USA Basketball and a senior vice-president at the NCAA, was appointed to the Commission for International Competitions. Chris Plonsky, USA Basketball vice-president for women and senior associate athletics director for men's and women's athletics at Texas, was chosen as a member of the Commission for Women's Basketball. Henry Nichols, a member of USA Basketball's Officials Committee and NCAA coordinator of men's basketball officiating, was named as vice-president of the Technical Commission.

NATIONAL OFFICE

David Klossner was named as an assistant director of education outreach at the national office. Klossner has been an assistant professor at DePauw ... Jacqueline McWilliams was chosen as an assistant director of championships at the NCAA. McWilliams has been an assistant athletics director at Morgan State ... LaRon Black was selected as a coordinator for membership services. Black has been director of alumni affairs at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law ... Brenda Reimer assumed responsibilities as assistant director of special events for the NCAA Hall of Champions. Reimer has been coordinator for Division I Women's Basketball ... Mark Eby was named as manager of licensing at the national office. Eby has been director of interactive marketing at Wichita State ... Melissa Cavanaugh was elevated to human resources coordinator at the NCAA. Cavanaugh has been an administrative assistant for human resources.

CORRECTIONS

The name of the athletic trainer for the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, was misspelled in the January 6 issue of The NCAA News. The correct name is Jerry Weber ... Tom Jacobs, NCAA director of championships, has decided to remain with the Association rather than accept a position as general manager of Badger Sports Properties at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, as was previously announced in the January 6 edition of The NCAA News. Jacobs has been with the NCAA championships staff since 1990.

NOTABLES

Steve Negoesco was chosen as an inductee into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. Negoesco spent 39 years as head men's soccer coach at San Francisco. Before his retirement after the 2000 season, Negoesco led teams to seven national championship game appearances, capturing national titles in 1966, 1975, 1976 and 1980 ... The following were named as National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas collegiate players of the year: Division I -- Alecko Eskandarian, Virginia; Aly Wagner, Santa Clara. Division II -- Mounir Tajiou, Southern New Hampshire; Missy Gregg, Christian Brothers. Division III -- Hayden Woodworth, Messiah; Leah Cornwell, William Smith.

DEATHS

Al Bart, former football player at Fordham, died recently. A three-year defensive letter-winner, the 1937 all-American went on to play professionally in the NFL for seven years.

Former Bowling Green track and cross country coach Mel Brodt died of cancer December 31. He was 76. Brodt led the cross country program for 25 years and guided the men's track program for 20 years. Brodt was a member of the U.S. Track Coaches Hall of Fame.

Lisle Lloyd, former softball coach at Chapman, died December 18 at the age of 79. Lloyd spent 16 seasons as head coach and led the school to a Division III national championship in 1995 before retiring after the 1998 season.

Former Pittsburgh football player Jo Jo Heath died at the age of 45. Heath, a four-year letter-winner from 1976 to 1979, earned a national championship with the team in 1976 and was captain of the 1979 squad that won the Fiesta Bowl. He went on to compete professionally with the NFL and the Canadian Football League.

Former California football player Vic Bottari died January 6 at the age of 86. The 1981 National Football Foundation Hall of Fame inductee was an all-America halfback and was named most valuable player in the 1938 Rose Bowl.

Mario Tonelli, former Notre Dame football fullback, died January 7. He was 86. Tonelli competed with the school in the late 1930s.

Basil Hayden, former basketball player and coach at Kentucky, died at the age of 103. Hayden competed on the team from 1920 to 1922 and served as head coach during the 1926-27 season.
