Williams, which advanced with an overtime win the night before, went to the wire again before securing its first Division III Men's Basketball Championship.

The Ephs led for only 18 seconds of the second half in the title game, but that was enough as Williams rallied for a 67-65 win over Gustavus Adolphus March 22 at Salem, Virginia.

The victor's Tim Folan hit a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to provide the game-winning points. Folan, a senior forward, then sealed the victory by intercepting the Golden Gusties' ensuing long inbounds pass.

Gustavus Adolphus led, 63-55, with 3:16 remaining when Williams began its decisive comeback. After a teammate's free throw, Folan scored four straight points to pull the Ephs within three points, 63-60.

Williams' Benjamin Coffin, the tournament's most outstanding player, shaved the margin to two with a free throw at the 1:28 mark. Williams took its first lead of the second half, 64-63, when Folan drained a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining.

The Gusties reclaimed the lead 16 seconds later on Derek Nelson's inside bucket. Williams held for a final shot when Coffin was fouled with four seconds left. Coffin made the first free throw and missed the second shot to set up Folan's game-winner.

Gustavus Adolphus' Tim Brown led all scorers with 19 points. Doug Espenson added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Gusties, who dropped to 26-7 with the loss.

Folan's 15 points led the Ephs. Coffin chipped in with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Ephs, who won their 17th straight to finish 31-1 (a school record for wins), were guilty of only four turnovers while forcing Gustavus Adolphus into 17.

Williams point guard Michael Crotty dished out 12 assists. Crotty, an all-tournament selection, was responsible for 22 assists in the two Williams victories. The other members of the all-tournament squad were Coffin, Espenson, Bryan Nelson (Wooster) and Jeff Monroe (Hampden-Sydney).

In the third-place game, Wooster defeated Hampden-Sydney, 78-74.
