The trophy case at Wheaton (Massachusetts) has to be getting crowded. The Lyons added another piece of hardware to the collection by winning their third straight Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships team title May 22-24 at St. Lawrence.

With five consecutive indoor track and field crowns to its credit, Wheaton has finished first in eight straight Division III championships. It became the first institution in the division to sweep the women's indoor and outdoor crowns in three consecutive years.

The Lyons compiled 72 points at this year's outdoor meet. Lehman posted its first top-five team finish by placing second with 52 points.

"Each and every year, the competition in this division becomes better and better, and that makes it awfully difficult to continually win national championships," said Wheaton head coach Paul Souza. "Our younger athletes see what the veteran athletes are accomplishing and, in turn, they go out and accomplish the same thing."

Amber James is one of those veterans who provided a shining example for her teammates. James won the 400-meter dash for the third year in a row, and the 200-meter dash for the second consecutive year. She also ran a leg on the Lyons' victorious 1,600-meter relay.

Vernick Smith provided Wheaton with another individual title in the 100-meter dash. Smith also finished third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, and she joined James, Tessa Donoghue and Jana Bromell in the 1,600 relay.

Paulette Baldwin and Alecia Watson spearheaded Lehman's effort. Baldwin topped the field in the 100-meter high hurdles for the second consecutive year and placed third in the long jump. Watson came in second in the 100 dash, third in the 200 and triple jump, and eighth in the long jump.

Missy Buttry of Wartburg and Darcell Edwards of McMurry also earned two first places each. Buttry won the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs, both in meet-record times. It was her second consecutive victory in the shorter race, and capped a year during which she was the cross country individual champion and the 1,500 winner indoors.

Edwards swept the long and triple jump crowns, winning the latter for the third straight time and with a meet record. Keene State's Mary Proulx earned her third consecutive 10,000-meter run title.

Other repeat winners were Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Liz Woodworth (800-meter run), Williams' Healy Thompson (shot put), Johns Hopkins' Kathy Darling (discus throw) and Moravian's Christina Scherwin (javelin throw). Darling's first triumph in the discus was in 2001 when she attended Rowan. Thompson also returned to the top spot after a year's absense.

In addition to Buttry and Edwards, meet records were set by Woodworth, Scherwin, Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Deena Heins (hammer throw), Richard Stockton's Kim Marino (pole vault), and Williams' Jenn Campbell (3,000-meter steeplechase).
