Averett claimed its first national championship in a team sport with a win at the Division III Men's Golf Championships May 12-15 at Ohio Wesleyan. To make the win even sweeter, Averett senior Janne Mommo also won the individual title.

Averett began the final day nine shots behind Wesley and was still behind by six strokes midway through the last round when an 83-minute rain delay ensued. The Cougars stormed to the lead after the break, shooting one over par and capturing the title by five strokes.

Host Ohio Wesleyan shared third place with St. John's (Minnesota).

The Cougars shot a final-round 284, 15 strokes better than Wesley's fourth-round total. Wesley received an additional blow to its title hopes when freshman Brock Cerklefskie, the team's low scorer for the day, was assessed a two-stroke penalty after an Averett player reported an improper drop in a water-logged bunker. Cerklefskie consulted with an official and was given the penalty.

Mommo won the individual title by three shots over Nathan Proshek of St. John's (Minnesota). Mommo's card included a course-record 65 in the second round. Toni Karjalainen, Averett teammate and fellow Finland national, finished third with a four-over 288.

Averett coach Jim Gourlay and his team jumped into a lake at the driving range to celebrate their victory.
