Wheeling and dealing: Bronchos triumph again in wrestling

The NCAA News

Central Oklahoma coach David James seems to like Wheeling, West Virginia. The Bronchos won National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national titles in Wheeling in 1979, with James winning top honors on the mat, and in 1987 under James' tutelage. Now James has the Wheeling trifecta after his Central Oklahoma squad won the Division II Wrestling Championships in the West Virginia city March 14-15.

Central Oklahoma captured its 14th national wrestling title with the help of individual crowns from Mark Dodgen (125-pound class), Cole Province (133) and Shawn Silvis (165) to pull away from Nebraska-Kearney. The Bronchos won their second straight title.

"Wheeling was good to us in the past and it was again this weekend," said James, who has led the Bronchos to 11 of their 14 titles (including NAIA crowns). "Obviously I've got great feelings and emotions right now because this is a tremendous achievement for our program."

The top-ranked Bronchos, who entered the evening with a slim four-point lead, finished with 87 1/2 points. Nebraska-Omaha was third, followed by North Dakota State and Findlay.

Central Oklahoma's Jeff Henning finished third at 184 and Jerod Goodwin was seventh at 149, helping the Bronchos overcome the upset losses of Matt Dodgen (141) and Jason Tapia (174) early in the tournament.

"We had to battle through some adversity here but we had some guys really come through for us when the pressure was on," James said. "Our three champions really stepped it up, but I can't say enough about the job Jeff and Jerod did."

Mark Dodgen won his title by breaking a scoreless tie with Western State's Jared Haberman early in the second period with a reverse, taking Haberman directly to his back and getting a pin at the 3:53 mark. It was the 25th straight win for the senior, who finished the season 27-2 while ending his career with a 78-16 record.

Province followed with the tournament-clinching victory, dominating Nebraska-Omaha's Mitch Waite, 6-1, for his third straight title.

The junior had takedowns in each of the first two periods and racked up more than three minutes of riding time, putting the finishing touch on a 26-0 campaign and stretching his winning streak to 38.

Silvis won his second consecutive individual title with an 8-4 finals triumph over Minnesota State-Mankato's Jake Emerick at 165.
