The role of bridesmaid in women's golf is over for Rollins. The Tars saved their best round of the tournament for last, but they didn't shoot poorly in any of the four days as they waltzed to a to 39-stroke victory in the Division II Women's Golf Championships May 14-17 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Rollins, which placed second in 1996, 2000 and 2001, willed the bridesmaid tag to Florida Southern for this year's championship. That was a reversal for the Moccasins, who had won the crown for three consecutive years.

Rollins dominated play from the start, gaining a 29-stroke lead over Florida Southern after the first two rounds. Northern Colorado finished third in the team standings, followed by Grand Valley State and Longwood.

The individual competition was closer, but Rollins won that, too. Rollins freshman Charlotte Campbell claimed medalist honors by four strokes, matching the NCAA Division II tournament record for the lowest individual round with her two-under-par 71 in the final round. Campbell was named the NCAA Division II Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year before the tournament.

Pamela Feggans of Florida Southern placed second, and Freddie Seeholzer of Rollins and Emily Russell of Northern Colorado tied for third.

Though the Tars had not won an NCAA title since the championship began in 1996, Rollins is no stranger to golf titles, having won seven times when the championship was sponsored by the AIAW and the NCGA.

Rollins head coach Julie Garner was named the Division II Coach of the Year.
