Milestones: Peggy Martin, women's volleyball coach at Central Missouri State University, surpassed 900 wins recently during the CMSU Holiday Inn Express Challenge. The milestone victory came September 13 in the 24th-ranked Jennies' 30-28, 30-27, 30-25 victory over the University of Alabama, Huntsville. After the conclusion of the tournament, her career record stood at 901-232-8, making her only the third coach in NCAA history -- and the first in Division II -- to reach the 900-win mark in women's volleyball. The others are Andy Banachowski of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Larry Bock of Juniata College. Central Missouri State won 19 consecutive Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships from 1982 to 2000. The Jennies have appeared in the field of the last 20 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championships ... North Dakota State University women's volleyball coach Zaundra Bina captured her 350th career win in a victory over Northern Michigan University August 30. After the weekend's action, her career record stood at 351-112 in nine seasons at North Dakota State and five at Augustana College (South Dakota). She entered the season tied for eighth in winning percentage among Division II coaches and tied for No. 21 in victories.

Sports sponsorship: Caldwell College officially added women's cross country as its 10th varsity sport this fall. The new team is coached by John Tosato.

Miscellaneous: Hornsby Howell, director of football operations at Shaw University, was the presenter for Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Elvin Bethea in the induction ceremony held in Canton, Ohio, this summer. Howell, a 1950 graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, coached Bethea, who played there from 1964 through 1968. "As Elvin Bethea's former football coach, I feel honored to be here on this momentous occasion before football's greatest to introduce him," Howell said at the induction ceremony. "I reflect back to the summer of 1964 when he came to play for me. 'I'm the best offensive lineman you've ever had,' he would say. I put up with that for one year. Then Claude Humphries of Tennessee State (a dominating defensive lineman who played for years with the Atlanta Falcons) and Elvin had a big battle, Elvin as an offensive lineman. After the game I wrote Claude a nice little note saying, 'Thank you very much.' And so from then on, Elvin was a defensive player." During his acceptance remarks, Bethea said, "Coach Howell. Here is a man I thought was insane, crazy, out of his head. But he is the man that put me here today and I will say that to anyone. Coach Howell would push me to the point of no return, to the limit and beyond. I remember the three practices a day and that's what it took to get me here today and I say, 'Thank you, Coach.' " Howell is in his second season at Shaw after working at North Carolina A&T for more than 30 years as a coach, athletic trainer and interim athletics director ... University of Minnesota Morris senior soccer player Rebecca Witters reached an NCAA milestone September 12 when she became the 16th Division II player to tally 40 goals and 40 assists in a career.
