Sports sponsorship: Queens University of Charlotte has announced that it will sponsor men's and women's lacrosse as varsity intercollegiate sports, beginning with the 2003-04 academic year. Jim Fritz, formerly the men's head coach at Pfeiffer University, will lead the men's program, while Kevin Cooke, head coach at Mercyhurst College for the last five years, will lead the women. "We are excited to expand our opportunities for athletics participation here at Queens," Athletics Director Jeannie King said. "We feel we have hired two outstanding leaders who will provide a quality experience for our student-athletes."

Milestones: Lars Jensen, wrestling coach at San Francisco State University, won his 100th career match January 18 when the Gators defeated Gannon University, 23-15. Jenson led San Francisco State to the Division II national championship in 1997, the only NCAA team title in school history ... Shirley Duncan, women's basketball coach at Longwood University, won her 300th game at Longwood January 11 with a 79-67 victory over Erskine College. After the victory, Duncan's record over 20 years at Longwood stood at 300-228 (341-288 overall in 24 years).
