Facilities: Rockhurst University finally has its "field of dreams," ending the Hawks' years as a nomadic Division II baseball team. The university dedicated its new on-campus facility September 27. It is the main focus of the $11 million Loyola Park, which also will have six tennis courts and a field for intramural sports. Since resuming intercollegiate baseball in 1993 after a hiatus of 27 years, the Hawks had practiced and played their home games at Hidden Valley Park in suburban Blue Springs, Missouri, about 20 miles from campus. To use the facility, the Hawks were responsible for maintaining the field. When the grandstands are complete, the new facility will seat 1,100 fans. "This is a great day, a great sensation," said Rockhurst coach Gary Burns, whose team took fourth place in the 1999 Division II Baseball Championship. "This is what we have been dreaming about -- a home ballpark, a beautiful one for sure."

Milestones: Tony Tocco, men's soccer coach at Rockhurst University, won his 500th career match October 3. A full-time accounting professor who is in his 33rd season as coach of the Hawks, Tocco ranks second on the list of winningest Division II coaches, trailing only Cliff McCrath of Seattle Pacific University. Four other coaches in all divisions have won more than 500 matches. "I really hadn't thought of winning No. 500," Tocco said. "After the game I was talking to our kids, and one of them reminded me of winning my 500th. It was just another game for me. Those are nice numbers, and I'm in good company. But I've been around a long time and, of course, this is a great soccer school" ... Tiffin University men's soccer coach Ian Day won his 300th match earlier this season with a 5-0 victory over Viterbo University. After the win, Day's career record stood at 300-113-22 over 20 years, a .723 winning percentage. He currently ranks second among NCAA Division II coaches in winning percentage.
