Membership: South Dakota State University's Board of Regents voted December 12 to allow the institution to pursue Division I membership. "Now we begin seeking a conference," South Dakota State President Peggy Miller said after the vote at the board's meeting. "Letters will be going out this evening." South Dakota State has been a member of the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Milestones: Ken Tyler, men's basketball coach at Shepherd College, won his 100th career game when the Rams defeated Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, 77-74, December 3. After the victory, Tyler's career record stood at 100-82.

Sports sponsorship: Pfeiffer University announced that women's golf will become a varsity sport in 2004-05.
