Sue Willey, director of athletics at the University of Indianapolis, has been elected chair of the Division II Management Council.

The Division II Presidents Council ratified Willey's election at its October 30 meeting in Indianapolis. She will assume her new responsibilities at the end of the 2004 NCAA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, replacing Tony Capon, faculty athletics representative at the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown.

Willey has represented the Great Lakes Valley Conference on the Management Council since January 2002. She has served on the Division II Legislation Committee (and on that group's Interpretations Subcommittee) and as Management Council liaison to the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also is a member of the Student-Athlete Involvement Project Team. Willey has served on the Great Lakes Valley Conference Executive Committee and is a member of the NCAA Common Ground Advisory Board for the Stay in Bounds program.

Willey is in her first year as athletics director at Indianapolis, where she is the first female athletics director in school history. Her tenure at Indianapolis spans 28 years, the last 16 of which have been as associate director of athletics. Her primary responsibilities have included NCAA, conference and institutional rules compliance for more than 400 student-athletes competing in 21 sports. She also has held the title of senior woman administrator since the position was created in 1995.

Willey holds master's and doctorate degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington. An associate professor of health and physical education at Indianapolis, she has taught in the department of kinesiology for more than 25 years and has a special interest in sport ethics.

Willey began her coaching career at her alma mater after graduating from Indianapolis in 1975. She coached 23 years, directing 43 different teams in five sports. She earned GLVC coach of the year recognition in softball in 1989, and her softball teams earned national academic honors in 1996 and 1997.

A 1993 inductee into the University of Indianapolis Athletic Hall of Fame, Willey earned 19 varsity letters and 11 most valuable player awards during her four-year career.
