In only its third appearance in the Division II Men's Golf Championships, Francis Marion played like a postseason veteran, winning the title by leading from wire to wire.

The championships were played May 20-23 at Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Oregon.

Not only had the Patriots not finished higher than 10th in their three previous trips to the finals since 1992 when they joined Division II, they finished fourth in their own conference tournament and second in the regional.

But all five scorers had played in last year's championships, and the squad backed its reputation as an NAIA power when the school posted five top-10 national finishes in seven appearances before 1992.

Francis Marion led at the end of every round, building a three-stroke first-round lead to a 19-shot cushion entering the last round of the tournament. Though the Patriots posted their highest score the final day, only one team beat par in the fourth round, which helped secure a 14-stroke victory.

Rollins finished second in the team standings, followed by Cal State Stanislaus. Rollins, the defending champion, posted the best round of the final day, a two-under-par 286, but the Tars were not able to close to within fewer than 11 strokes.

Francis Marion's win was a team effort, as only four shots (73-77) separated the five Patriot scores in the final round. The five-man squad shot between 69 and 74 the previous day.

In the final round, senior Matt Dura and junior Per Hallberg posed 1-over-par 73s.

In the individual competition, Pfeiffer's Andrew McArthur shot 3 under on the last day to finish with a 279 and earn medalist honors. Scott Usher from South Carolina-Aiken had the lead after the second and third rounds but fell to second after a fourth-round 73.
