The smallest membership division again had the largest attendance by chief executive officers. A preliminary count showed that 66 Division II CEOs representing active institutions attended, compared to 46 for Division III and 23 for Division I. In addition, 11 presidents representing provisional institutions attended from both Divisions II and III. The preliminary count on overall attendance was 1,674 (546 from Division II).

The Division II Presidents Council met January 12 and elected Mary Margaret Fitzpatrick, president of St. Thomas Aquinas College, to the Council as Region 1 representative.

The Management Council, which met January 10, agreed to terminate the drug-testing pilot in baseball and investigate the possibility of an all-sports drug-testing plan. The Council also referred to the Membership Committee a request from the Committee on Women's Athletics to strengthen the gender-equity component of the Division II Institutional Self-Study Guide. In another action, the Management Council approved a one-year trial study to allow Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representatives to serve as nonvoting members of the Academic Requirements, Championships and Membership Committees.

The Presidents Council meeting was the final one for former Vice-Chair Bernard Franklin, president of Virginia Union University. Terms also expired for Management Council members Bruce Harger, Drury University; Ed Harris, west Texas A&M University; Mike Kovalchik, Hillsdale College; and Mike Marcil, North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Marcil and Patricia Cormier, president of Longwood University and outgoing chair of the Division II Presidents Council, were honored with resolutions for their service to Division II. At the close of the Convention, Tony Capon, faculty athletics representative at the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown, became Management Council chair while Kay Schallenkamp, president of Emporia State University, became chair of the Presidents Council.
