The state of Hawaii made quite an impression at the Division II Men's Tennis Championship with two of its own battling for the national title. Brigham Young-Hawaii outlasted Hawaii Pacific, 5-4, May 12 for its second consecutive championship.

The title match lasted more than four and one-half hours and marked the fourth meeting between the two schools.

In doubles play, Brigham Young-Hawaii's Seasiders gained a 2-1 advantage behind wins by Jan Krejci and Peter Madarassy, and Daouda Ndiaye and Wen-Lung Chang. The one-point advantage would not hold for long.

In singles play, Hawaii Pacific's Jan Tribler downed Ndiaye at the No. 5 spot to tie the match at 2. Brigham Young-Hawaii stormed back to gain crucial points with wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles.

Hawaii Pacific's Sea Warriors returned the favor. Gabor Jaross and Sasa Pirc earned wins at Nos. 3 and 6 and once again tied the match.

In the deciding contest, Krejci downed Mikael Maatta, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to ensure his team's victory.

"It's heart-wrenching for the team to come so close," said Hawaii Pacific coach Henry Somerville. "Regardless, I'm very proud of what we accomplished this year. The guys showed a tremendous amount of pride and courage and played some their best tennis during the tournament."

The two Hawaii schools have appeared in the tournament field for five consecutive years, and both have advanced to at least the semifinals three times. Hawaii Pacific has finished second three times. Brigham Young-Hawaii's win last year ended a decade of dominance by Lander and Rollins.
