Abilene Christian's varied attack withstood a challenge from Western State's crew of distance runners to allow the Wildcats to repeat as team champions in the Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships March 14-15 in Boston.

The Wildcats scored 58 points, stretched over five of the meet's 13 events, to edge Western State by four points. Abilene Christian has won the indoor title 10 times in the championships' 18-year history.

Bernard Manirakiza was the Wildcats' only event winner, edging Central Missouri State's Leif Kennedy by .45 of a second in the 800-meter run. Manirakiza also placed sixth in the mile run, despite losing his shoe during the first few seconds of the race.

"Someone stepped on my shoe," Manirakiza said. "It came off and I had to run the rest of the race without it. It was tough, but I had to keep going."

Abilene Christian had two scorers in each of three events. Nic Alexander was second and Christie VanWyk was fourth in the 60-meter dash. In the triple jump, Yevgen Pashchenko and Ben Washington finished second and third, respectively. Shai Shalev placed third and Manuel Brandeborn finished fourth in the shot put.

Western State wrapped up all 54 of its points in only two events -- the mile run and 5,000-meter run. Scott Nagelkerke won the 5,000 and finished second to teammate Will Banks in the mile. The Mountaineers swept the top six places in the 5,000.

Cal State Bakersfield was third in the team scoring with 34 points. Tony Thompson won the shot put for the Roadrunners, with teammate Chris Figures taking the runner-up spot.

Ivan Varbanov of Central Missouri State was the meet's lone double winner as he flew to victory in the high and triple jumps. Jason Smoots of North Carolina Central set the only meet record with a mark of 6.55 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

Smoots won the short sprint event (55 meters in 2001, 60 meters in 2002 and 2003) for the third consecutive year. Kevin Bartlett of Lincoln (Missouri) was the only other athlete to repeat, winning the long jump for the second year in a row.
