2003 matching grants for diversity awarded

Six institutions and one conference have been awarded grants for the third year of the Division II Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Program.

The institutions receiving grants for 2003 are Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Florida Southern College, Henderson State University, the University of North Dakota, Pace University and the University of West Florida. The Northeast-10 Conference also received a grant.

The matching grant program requires increasing institutional or conference financial commitment over a five-year period. The program was piloted in 2000 and given full standing in 2002. Division II currently funds the program at $500,000 annually.

Here is a description of the 2003 grant winners:

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, athletics development associate: This position will be responsible for assisting with athletics development and fund-raising. Duties include fund raising for NCAA sports programs, event management, budget management, monitoring NCAA regulations and monitoring Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference regulations. Other responsibilities include coordination of banquets and special events, summer-camp programs related to fund-raising opportunities, external use of athletics facilities, and serving on the diversity committee.

Florida Southern College, associate director of athletics for compliance and senior woman administrator: This position will serve as the NCAA compliance officer and administer student-athlete eligibility certification. In addition, this administrator will advocate, monitor and report on issues related to gender equity and work collaboratively with student-athletes, coaches, college administrators, staff and the director of athletics to ensure the efficient, service-oriented functioning of internal operations related to the athletics program.

Henderson State University, assistant senior woman administrator and coordinator of athletics academic success program: This position will provide attention to critical areas of athletics administration, gender and race-equity issues by serving as a representative on the University Diversity Committee and assisting other athletics administrators in the development of professional training programs. The position also will assist in the personal development and academic/life skills programming for student-athletes by instituting academic-success and life-skills programming to teach time management and stress reduction. The position also will assist in providing access to support staff, tutors and computer labs. Other responsibilities include development of the student-athlete handbook and administration of the senior exit-interview system.

University of North Dakota, senior woman administrator/assistant athletics director: The position will supervise and direct day-to-day operations of the department's facilities; solicit, coordinate and schedule events (both athletically and non-athletically related); assist in development of annual budgets; oversee home-game management, scheduling and coordinating contracts; serve as a liaison to University of North Dakota Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; and function as a member of senior management team assisting in the overall evaluation, supervision, direction and implementation of the department in regard to personnel, athletics programs, goal-setting, development and leadership. The position also will function as the senior woman administrator at all North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Western Collegiate Hockey Association and NCAA events. She also will serve as a liaison to the University of North Dakota Wellness Center as it relates to the athletics facilities, strength and conditioning staff and facilities and the operation of athletics equipment-room staff.

Northeast-10 Conference, assistant commissioner for internal operations/
senior woman administrator:
This position will be responsible for all internal operations of the conference office and for assisting member institutions with their compliance needs. This individual also will serve as conference senior woman administrator and as primary liaison to the SWA administrators council, direct the National Letter of Intent Program, assist in the coordination of NCAA coaches certification testing, serve as primary liaison to the conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, assist in administration of conference's 20 championships, coordinate conference rules education, and assist in prospecting for potential conference corporate sponsors.

Pace University, athletics business manager: The position will develop and implement policies and procedures for the operation of an efficient and effective business affairs unit that complies with institutional, conference and NCAA rules. Other duties will include maintaining accurate and current budgeting records; processing annual financial budgetary requests; monitoring department expenditures, equipment, travel, recruiting; and management for all accounts payable and receivable. This position also will handle the development of a budget analysis report, conference and NCAA financial reports, and the yearly Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act Report. In addition, this person will serve as a liaison with human resources and have direct interaction with the payroll and benefits offices regarding salaries and benefits for all temporary, part-time, full-time and student-athlete employees.

University of West Florida, coordinator of NCAA compliance and internal operations: This position will be responsible for compliance issues regarding the NCAA, the Gulf South Conference and the athletics department and will supervise and coordinate issues relating to game-day management, ticket sales and facility scheduling. This individual also will serve as an advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, coordinate Argo Adventures (an outreach program with local schools), coordinate weekly functions of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and develop the NCAA education program for northwest Florida high-school coaches.
