Led by individual champion Mikaela Parmlid, Southern California claimed its first Division I Women's Golf Championships team title May 20-23 at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.

Though the links title was the first for the Trojans, Southern California is no stranger to championships, having now won 17 women's titles and 88 in both genders.

Southern California led Pepperdine by seven strokes entering the final round. Seven quickly turned into 15, but then a string of bogeys allowed Pepperdine to creep to within five. Junior Anna Rawson, who finished 11th individually, birdied the 13th and 14th holes to push the margin back to 11. The Waves couldn't catch Southern California after that.

"We peaked at the right time and played our hearts out the last seven rounds," Southern California head coach Andrea Gaston said. "We're extremely excited to bring home the national championship."

Southern California finished with a 1,197 total, 15 strokes ahead of second-place Pepperdine. Texas finished one stroke behind the Waves at 1,213.

Individual champion Parmlid had to work overtime to earn medalist honors. Her five-over 77 in the final round pushed her into a tie with Florida's Andrea Vander Lende, who also fired a final-round 77. Play wasn't prolonged much, though, as Parmlid won the first extra hole. This marked the second time in three years a shootout was necessary. In 2001, Duke's Candy Hannemann won in a playoff over Arizona's Lorena Ochoa.

"This is a great way to go out," Parmlid said. "I wanted this so much for the team and for the school."

Parmlid is the second Southern California golfer to win the individual title; Jennifer Rosales won in 1998.
