It was a storybook finish in the snow for Indiana men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley.

The winningest Division I men's soccer coach in history, Yeagley watched his Hoosiers score twice in four minutes to beat St. John's (New York), 2-1, December 14 in the Men's College Cup final at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

Yeagley, who announced earlier he was retiring after this season, won his sixth championship and ended his career with a 544-101-45 record. The six championships ties him with former Saint Louis coach Bob Guelker for the most titles at one school. Saint Louis, with 10 men's soccer titles, is the only school to win more than Indiana.

A game that ended with snow began with Hoosier goals. Ned Grabavoy scored on a free kick in the 16th minute, and Jacob Peterson made it 2-0 four minutes later for the eighth-seeded Hoosiers. Peterson's goal was his seventh of the year and third in the postseason.

St. John's, playing in its first NCAA final since winning the 1996 title, scored with 12 minutes left on a goal by Ashley Kozicki. The snowy conditions made it tough for the Red Storm to tie the game, though. Hoosiers goalkeeper Jay Nolly made one of his season-high 10 saves with just over five minutes remaining.

"Toward the end of the game the snow was blowing in my eyes and St. John's was putting pressure on us," said Nolly. "I was getting nervous but our team stuck together like we have all year and we were able to pull out the win."

Nolly was named the College Cup's most outstanding defensive player.

"We played a great St. John's team that deserved to be here," said Yeagley. "Our players played hard all year. Our team played for each other this weekend and I am very proud of them. People stepped up this weekend -- people who usually don't play stepped up as well. Our group never felt that they couldn't win."

Indiana finished the season 17-3-5.

A crowd of more than 5,000 braved the snowy conditions at Columbus Crew Stadium. Before kickoff, officials used tractors, rakes and shovels to clear three inches of snow that fell the night before. The venue also hosted the 2001 College Cup when North Carolina beat Indiana in the final, 2-0.

The finalists this year both won 1-0 semifinal games. Indiana's was the most dramatic since the Hoosiers waited until the second overtime period to break the ice. Midfielder Pat Yates headed one in after 103 minutes of play.

St. John's (17-6-3) advanced on a first-half penalty kick by Sebastian Alvarado-Ralph. It was the second straight year Maryland had been ousted in the semifinals by a penalty kick.

Indiana's Peterson joined Nolly in postgame accolades, earning most outstanding offensive player honors. Other Hoosiers on the all-tournament team were Grabavoy, Jed Zayner, Drew Shinabarger, Josh Tudela and Danny O'Rourke. Other members of the team were Christopher Wingert of St. John's, Seth Stammler and Sumed Ibrahim of Maryland, and Will Weatherly of Santa Clara.
