Gators switch places with Stanford for women's title
Florida uses home-court edge to defeat Cardinal

The roles were reversed in this year's Division I Women's Tennis Championships May
15-24, and so were the results. In 2002, Stanford rode the home-court advantage to a win over Florida. But this year's championship in the Sunshine State turned the two-time defending champion Cardinal into Gator bait.

Florida clinched the title when junior Julie Rotondi upset Stanford's Lauren Barnikow in the No. 2 singles position 6-0, 7-5. The home crowd cheered when Barnikow's forehand went into the net, producing Florida's fourth national tennis championship.

"I think it is something every one of us has dreamed of since we were young," Rotondi said. "It was just going to come down to who was more poised and who wanted it more, and I've never wanted something so bad in my life."

The Gators took an early lead, winning the No. 3 doubles point to force Stanford to face a 1-0 deficit for only the third time this year. Lindsay Dawaf and Julia Scaringe took an
8-3 victory over Emilia Anderson and Story Tweedie-Yates.

The No. 1 doubles match-up featured a fierce fight between Florida's Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes and the Cardinal's top-ranked tandem of Barnikow and Erin Burdette. Florida again earned the team point.

"The way we played doubles in this championship really shows our commitment to improvement," Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "Without a doubt, we were the best doubles team in this tournament, and we knew going in that's what it takes to win this championship."

Lightning forced a weather delay but didn't disrupt the Gators' momentum. After the break, Burdette led Stanford to its first point at the No. 3 spot, but Florida sophomore Alexis Gordon rallied at the No. 5 position over Stanford's Anderson.

Fourth-ranked Amber Liu of Stanford defeated Scaringe at the No. 1 singles spot, while Florida's Zerene Reyes lost to Alice Barnes at No. 4. The crowd focused on Rotondi and Barnikow in the deciding match.

In the singles tournament, Stanford freshman Amber Liu upset Tennessee's Vilmarie Castellvi, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to become the 11th Stanford woman to win the singles title. Liu was the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rookie of the year.

Liu dominated the match, forcing Castellvi to chase the ball and commit four unforced errors in the fifth game of the second set.

"It was really important to win the title today," said Liu. "I just learned to bounce back. I didn't just do it for me, but for the entire team. It was a tough loss to handle last week when we lost the team title."

The match marked the fourth time Liu and Castellvi met this year, with each player winning twice.
