Utah's Katrin Smigun won both women's Nordic races, and her teammates won two other races as the Utes scored 682 points to win their 10th National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championship March 5-8 at Dartmouth. The victory snapped Denver's string of three straight titles.

The Utes virtually locked up the championship after the third day of competition, sprinting to a 100-point lead after those events, which included Smigun's win in the women's 15-kilometer classical Nordic race and Utah's 12th-place individual finished in the men's 20-kilometer version of the event.

Smigun already had won the 5-kilometer women's freestyle Nordic race on opening day, before blowing through the 15-kilometer Oak Hill course in 46:30.7 on the third day, finishing nearly 50 seconds ahead of Sigrid Aas of Alaska Fairbanks.

Utah also won the women's slalom and men's giant slalom. In the former, Lina Johansson won both runs, beating Colby freshman Jenny Lathrop by nearly a full second. The Utes' Ben Thornhill beat out Dartmouth's second-place Bradley Wall to win the men's giant slalom.

Runner-up Vermont vaulted three places into second place on the final day of competition on the strength of its Alpine racers, finishing the competition with 551 points. The Catamounts, with retiring coach Chip LaCasse at the helm for his final event, took two of the top three places in the men's slalom that day, as Jimmy Cochran and Scott Kennison finished second and third behind Dartmouth's Wall.

Wall's victory marked the second straight year that a Big Green skier has won men's slalom. A competitor for his native Australia in the 2002 Olympics at Salt Lake City, Wall bested Cochran by .02 of a second. Dartmouth's Roger Brown won the crown last year.

In the women's slalom, Hilary McCloy (fourth place) and Jamie Kingsbury (seventh) led Vermont's charge to second place. Kingsbury already had won the women's giant slalom on the second day of the meet, finishing as the Catamounts' only individual champion.
