Oklahoma opted to keep its championship crown for another year.

By distancing itself by almost two points from Ohio State, last year's runner-up, the Sooners claimed their fifth National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics Championships team title April 13 at Temple. Ohio State posted 220.700 points for second, and Penn State (219.950), Michigan (217.850), Illinois (217.125) and Iowa (215.250) rounded out the field.

The Sooners' win preserved a perfect record (26-0), achieved only once before by Ohio State in 1996.

"I told the team that this championship was about excellence," Oklahoma coach Mark Williams said. "I told the guys that we wanted to set a standard and win this championship in style. I am very proud to say that this team did that."

Daniel Furney led the charge for Oklahoma and captured the all-around crown for his efforts. But it took the entire team hitting on all events to secure the win. Josh Landis, Brett Covey, Heath Mueller, Jock Stevens and Jamie Henderson were just some of the Sooners who posted top performances en route to the title.

Last year's all-around champion Raj Bhavsar kept things close for his Ohio State team. He placed second in the all-around, while teammate Randy Monahan finished fourth.

The Sooners continued their dominance in the individual-events portion of the meet. Oklahoma was the only team to have an individual qualify in every event for the finals.

Furney won the parallel bars, while Landis grabbed the floor exercise and pommel horse titles. The feat made him the first gymnast in Oklahoma history to claim two individual national championships in the same year and the fourth to win multiple titles.

Landis said, "I couldn't have picked a better way to finish."

Penn State's Kevin Tan helped himself to the rings title and Michigan's Andrew DiGiore claimed vault. Iowa's Linas Gaveika won on the horizontal bar.
