'Seasonal shows' make television an inclusive experience for NCAA championships

The NCAA News

When the NCAA inked its 11-year bundled-rights agreement with CBS and ESPN, one of the happy outcomes was assurance that each of the Association's 87 championships would receive significant television exposure.

Though a tall order for television -- since many NCAA championships, particularly in Divisions II and III, had not received coverage in the past, -- CBS has risen to the occasion with "seasonal shows" that will focus the lens on all venues.

Of the 66 NCAA championships in the CBS rights agreement (ESPN covers 21 championships), 13 are either live, tape-delayed or captured in separate highlight shows. But 53 -- 14 in the fall, 16 in the winter and 23 in the spring -- had not received coverage on any national or regional network.

That has changed.

In December, CBS introduced "CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA," which featured stories, highlights and behind-the-scenes footage from all three divisions of field hockey, Divisions II and III men's and women's soccer and cross country, Divisions II and III women's volleyball and the National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championship.

"When CBS and the NCAA reached our historic agreement, a high priority was television coverage of NCAA championships that had not previously received it," said Mike Aresco, CBS Sports senior vice-president of programming. "The cooperation CBS has received from the NCAA and the individual conferences and schools has enabled us to give viewers an exciting and varied look at the intensity of the competitions, and an appreciation for the dedication of the outstanding student-athletes who participate in them."

Two other shows are scheduled this spring and summer, one for winter championships (airing May 25) and one for spring championships (airing June 29). The fall championships show in December reached more than two million viewers.

CBS' all-access approach makes the seasonal shows more than just highlight reels.

"These aren't typical anthology shows," said Jo Jo Rinebold, NCAA director of broadcasting and media integration. "These shows tell the stories of some of our 360,000 student-athletes in addition to showing them in action."

With institutional approval, CBS brings its cameras on team buses, into classrooms and other off-court and off-field venues to give viewers a greater insight into the life of NCAA student-athletes.

In addition, for the winter championships show, CBS host Bonnie Bernstein will be providing some of the narration from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, site of the National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships in March, which the NCAA and CBS felt was a fitting tribute in light of the military action in Iraq that was launched as many of the NCAA winter championships were being conducted.
