< Alaska Fairbanks on target for fifth straight championship

Alaska Fairbanks earned its fifth consecutive national title and sixth overall at the National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships March 15-16 at Army. Only West Virginia has won more consecutive titles than the Nanooks, claiming six from 1988 to 1993.

Xavier finished second with 6,197 points, ahead of Murray State (6,158) and Nevada (6,152).

Alaska Fairbanks won both the smallbore and air rifle competitions and broke the smallbore record of 4,713 set in 1999, with a 4,717 out of a perfect 4,800. Xavier was second in both disciplines with a 1,552 in air rifle and 4,645 score in smallbore. Nevada took third in air rifle with 1,543 and West Virginia claimed third in smallbore with 4,628 points.

Individually, Alaska Fairbank's Jamie Beyerle won the air rifle championship by one point over teammate Per Sandberg with a 395 and 32 inner tens. Teammate Matthew Emmons won the smallbore title for the third straight year.
