UC Irvine appoints Chichester to AD post

UC Irvine named Bob Chichester as director of intercollegiate athletics, effective October 14. Chichester replaces Dan Guerrero, who was named as athletics director at UCLA.

For the past three years, Chichester has been senior associate athletics director for administration, academic affairs and Olympic sports at Colorado. Before that, he was associate athletics director for administration and academic affairs at the school. He also worked with Colorado's athletics department as associate university counsel from 1996-98.

The 1979 Occidental graduate earned a bachelor's degree in American studies and competed in basketball and golf. Chichester earned a juris doctorate at Colorado in 1984.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Charles Ruch announced plans to retire as president at Boise State, effective next summer.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Delta State's Jim Jordan announced plans to retire as athletics director in June. Jordan has been athletics director at the school since 1987. ... David P. O'Brien was chosen as athletics director at Northeastern.

FACULTY ATHLETICS
REPRESENTATIVE

Scott Branvold was named as faculty athletics representative at Robert Morris. Branvold, a professor in the management and marketing department since 1994, succeeds Robert Norberg, who retired after fulfilling faculty athletics representative responsibilities since 1975.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Northern Iowa promoted Julie Bright to senior associate athletics director for business services and external relations ... Lynn Griffin was promoted to associate athletics director at St. Andrews Presbyterian. Griffin, who has been an assistant athletics director since 2000 and senior woman administrator and compliance officer since 1999, has been head women's basketball coach for five seasons and will retain coaching duties ... Santa Clara hired Desiree Reed-Francois as associate athletics director for compliance and student services. Reed-Francois has been director of compliance at San Jose State for three years ... Niagara promoted Bill Agronin and Barbara Green to associate athletics directors. Agronin, who replaces Jim Mauro, has been with the school since 1982 and will relinquish head women's basketball coaching responsibilities at the end of the 2002-03 season. Green, who joined the school in 1989, has been assistant athletics director for compliance and formerly was head volleyball coach at the school from 1990 to 1996 ... Ramsey Baker was hired as an associate athletics director at Union (New York). For the past two years, Baker has worked as director of public relations/marketing and chief operating officer of the Scholar-Athlete Games for the Institute for International Sport.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS

Eric Tyler was elevated to assistant athletics director for marketing at Northern Iowa ... Mount St. Mary's named Mike Hardisky as assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions. Hardisky, who replaces Gib Romaine, has been director of sports information at the school and director of public relations for Major League Lacrosse's Baltimore Bayhawks ... Mike Rollo was selected as an assistant athletics director for facilities at Tennessee.

COACHES

Baseball -- Sam Houston appointed Chris Rudd as head coach.

Baseball assistants -- Pace added Trevor Brown as pitching coach. Brown has been pitching coach at Georgetown for the past two seasons ... J.D. Heilmann was named as an assistant coach at Xavier ... Ball State named Clint Albert and Jason Taulman as assistants ... Sean McCann was selected as pitching coach at Missouri ... Elon named Austin Alexander as an assistant coach ... Maynard McClarrinon was hired as an assistant coach at Francis Marion. McClarrinon has been pitching coach at Young Harris College and also has been a part-time scout for MLB's Cincinnati Reds for 11 months ... Chris Viggiano and Jose DeJesus were added as assistant coaches at Lehman ... Fordham named Bob Caputo as pitching coach.

Men's basketball -- Michael Bernard was selected as head coach at Shaw to replace Joel Hopkins. Bernard has been head coach at Fayetteville State for the last four seasons ... La Salle awarded a contract extension to head coach Billy Hahn through the 2007 season. Hahn has been head coach since the end of the 2001 season ... Webster hired Chris Bunch as head men's coach. Bunch has been an assistant at Maryville (Tennessee) ... Allegheny chose Rob Clune as head coach to succeed Phil Ness. For the past seven seasons, Clune has served as head coach at Bethany (West Virginia) ... Rob deGrandpre was tabbed as head men's basketball coach and sports information director at Hilbert.

Men's basketball assistants -- Royce Samuels was named as an assistant at Wisconsin-Stout ... Bradley chose Eric Buescher as men's basketball administrative assistant ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis tabbed Kelsey Wilson as an assistant coach ... Geno Ford was awarded duties as an assistant at Kent State ... North Carolina-Greensboro named Jonathan Tsipis as director of basketball operations and elevated Aaron Denton to assistant coach. Tsipis was an assistant coach at Elon, and Denton served as director of basketball operations last season ... Nick DelTufo resigned as an assistant coach at Caldwell. The school tabbed Dave DeFerrari as an assistant men's basketball coach and director of the fitness center ... Rutgers awarded Jim Carr with director of men's basketball operations responsibilities ... Mike Nestor and Wayne Morris were promoted to full-time assistant coaches at Shippensburg. Nestor and Morris have been interim assistants. The school also announced R.C. Kehoe as a volunteer assistant coach.

Women's basketball -- Western Carolina's Beth Dunkenberger agreed to terms on a contract extension as head coach through the 2005-06 season ... Angela Daniels accepted responsibilities as head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Daniels, who has been head coach at Edward Waters College for the past four years, replaces Kenneth Conley.

Women's basketball assistants -- Mark Noll was chosen as an assistant basketball coach and assistant sports information director in charge of marketing at Wisconsin-Stout. The school also selected Kari Kerkfoff as an assistant coach ... Cal State Fullerton appointed Katie McCluskey as an assistant coach ... Tiffany Moore was named as a restricted coach at Stephen F. Austin ... Kent State added Shawn Campbell as an assistant. Campbell, who takes over for Brady Sallee, was head coach at Western Kentucky last season ... Rhode Island College selected Carl Sabo as an assistant coach. Formerly, Sabo was head varsity boys' coach at Ursuline Academy (Illinois) from 1996 to 1999 and assistant girls' varsity coach at Springfield (Illinois) High School from 1994 to 1996 ... Albany (New York) named Melvin Smith as an assistant coach. Most recently, Smith has worked as an assistant men's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at McDaniel ... Jessie Gordon was hired as an assistant at Shippensburg. Gordon was a member of the school's women's squad for two seasons and was an honorable mention all-American.

Men's and women's cross country -- Keith Ellingson, head men's cross country coach and men's track and field head coach at Wisconsin-Stout, resigned, effective immediately. Joe Harlan, head women's cross country head coach at the school, accepted additional responsibilities as interim head men's coach ... Craig Walston was awarded additional responsibilities as head cross country coach at Webster. Walston has served as head softball coach for six years.

Men's and women's cross country assistants -- Rider named Bob Marchetti as an assistant cross country and track and field coach ... Jamey Vetelino was tabbed as an assistant men's and women's cross country and track coach at Rhode Island College ... John Barry was chosen as an assistant men's and women's coach at Stonehill.

Field hockey assistant -- Colby selected Marcia Ingraham as an assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach.

Football -- Mike Price signed a five-year contract as head coach at Washington State. Price has guided the program for 14 seasons ... Bobby Keasler resigned as head coach at Louisiana-Monroe. Keasler, who will remain with the athletics department in an administrative position through December, has been head coach since December 1998. The school chose assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Mike Collins as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Football assistants -- Ken Conatser resigned as offensive line coach at Kansas ... North Texas' Kelvin Martin resigned as an assistant coach. Martin had been in his second season with the school ... Stonehill hired Greg Sheeler and Brian Moloney as assistant coaches.

Men's and women's golf -- Augusta State selected Josh Gregory as director of golf and head men's golf coach ... Doug Hamilton accepted duties as head coach at Washburn ... Dubuque appointed Bobbi Endress as head women's coach.

Men's and women's gymnastics assistants -- Chris Waller was named as an assistant women's coach at UCLA ... West Virginia added Joanna Parrett as an assistant coach. From 1999-01, Parrett worked as an assistant at Iowa.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Wisconsin-Stout hired Paul Frank as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Jon Basti was hired as head men's lacrosse coach at Eastern Connecticut State. Basti, who was an assistant at Sacred Heart from 2001 to 2002, succeeds the retired Rick McCarthy ... Columbia tabbed Kerri Whitaker as head women's coach ... Anne Phillips was awarded responsibilities as head women's coach at Franklin & Marshall.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Hofstra chose Paul Ramsey as an assistant women's coach ... Christopher Strycharz and Kevin Ireland were added as assistants at Eastern Connecticut State. Both are 2002 graduates of the school and were four-year letter-winners of the men's lacrosse squad ... James Madison added Heather Dent and Gussie Habeck as assistant women's coaches. Dent has been head coach at Wagner since 1999. Habeck is a 2001 graduate of Georgetown, where she was captain of the 2001 NCAA national championship runners-up.

Men's and women's rowing assistants -- Mindy Frantzen was named as an assistant coach at Cincinnati ... Katie Davis was tabbed as an assistant women's coach at Bucknell ... Pennsylvania selected Seth Brennan as freshman heavyweight rowing coach, Michael Irwin as varsity lightweight rowing coach and John Fife as freshman lightweight rowing coach. Brennan has been a heavyweight assistant coach at Northeastern, and Irwin has been an assistant at Yale for seven years. Fife is a 2002 graduate of Pennsylvania and was a four-year member of the heavyweight program.

Men's and women's skiing -- St. Cloud State hired Jeremy Frost as head women's Nordic coach.

Men's soccer assistants -- John Woodward was appointed as an assistant coach at Emerson ... Stonehill chose Jim Reddish and Scott Dolan as assistant coaches ... Joseph Rucco was tabbed as an assistant at Utica.

Women's soccer -- Albany (New York) tabbed Stacey Adams as an assistant coach. Adams has been a volunteer assistant at Miami (Florida).

Women's soccer assistants -- Caldwell added Chris Habermas as an assistant ... Emerson selected Mary Smith and Jahaan Blake as assistant coaches ... Rachel McCarthy, Britt Sellmeyer and Paula Callaghan were added as assistants at Stonehill ... Colby named Lizzy Rice as an assistant coach.

Softball -- Bemidji State chose Amanda Went as head softball coach and assistant women's basketball coach ... Jack Byerley accepted responsibilities as head coach at Francis Marion. Byerley, who succeeds Bill Gray, has been an assistant at Florida for the past two years ... Johnson & Wales named Lance Howlett as head coach ... Bill Goc was named as head softball coach and facilities coordinator at Hilbert.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Bloomsburg named Edward Hampford as head men's coach ... Hunter elevated Delon Callender as head women's coach. For the past three years, Callender has worked as an assistant ... Michael Caruso assumed duties as head men's and women's coach at Rose-Hulman.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Eric Ekinbary was tabbed as an assistant men's coach at Princeton ... Rachael Amman was appointed as an assistant men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Clemson ... Lindsay Wilson was selected as an assistant women's coach at Dartmouth.

Men's and women's tennis -- Army selected Jim Poling as head men's coach ... Peter Davidson was hired as head women's coach at Mount St. Vincent ... Evan Schermer was hired as head men's and women's coach at Robert Morris. Since 1998, Schermer has been a tennis professional and summer camp director at Oxford Health Club in Pennsylvania ... Randolph-Macon appointed Ana Litton as head women's tennis coach and assistant women's basketball coach. Litton was an assistant women's basketball and volleyball coach at Washington and Lee from 1998 to 2000 ... Citadel appointed Toby Simpson as head men's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Seth Mischke was chosen as head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at St. Cloud State.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Clemson appointed Glenn McAtee as an assistant women's coach ... Seton Hall selected Gary Duncan as an assistant men's and women's coach. Duncan has been coaching with the A.U.I. Track Club in New Jersey.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Guilford named Roddy Akbari as an assistant coach ... Bucknell appointed Shannon Ellis as a graduate assistant coach ... Anne Tricomi was chosen as an assistant coach at Colby.

Wrestling -- Brett Owen was named as head coach at Scranton.

Wrestling assistant -- Campbell tabbed Billy Greene as an assistant coach.

STAFF

Athletic trainers -- Paul Schmidt was chosen as head athletic trainer at Wayne State (Michigan). For the past six years, Schmidt has been an assistant athletic trainer at Syracuse ... Carl Payne assumed duties as an athletic trainer at Bloomfield ... Tennessee chose Keith Clements as an athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Jeff Wood was tabbed as an assistant athletic trainer at Tennessee.

Life Skills coordinator -- Westminster (Missouri) named Molly Sartorius as CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator. Sartorius, who has been with the school since 2000, is a counselor with the Westminster counseling and health services department.

Marketing/promotions -- Shaun Russell was tabbed as athletics marketing and promotions director at Maine. Since November 2001, Russell has been a fund account analyst for Forum Financial Group.

Media relations assistant -- Mark Wasik was named as assistant director of athletics media relations at South Alabama. For the past three years, Wasik, who succeeds Beau Doolittle, has been assistant sports information director at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Sports information -- Merry Graf was named as sports information coordinator at Webster. Graf will continue to serve as head volleyball coach at the school.

Sports information assistant -- Tracy King resigned after two years as an assistant sports information director at Seton Hall.

Strength and conditioning -- Dayton tabbed Mac Calloway as strength and conditioning coach for men's and women's basketball ... Lafayette named Steve Mannino as strength coach.

Ticket office -- Oregon State hired Matt Arend as ticket manager. Arend has been assistant ticket manager at Iowa for two years ... Jeremiah Maher was elevated to athletics ticket manager at Seton Hall. Maher has been assistant ticket manager for the past two years.

CONFERENCES

Terry Small was hired as commissioner at the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Small has been assistant athletics director and sports information director at Stevens Tech ... The Great Northeast Athletic Conference announced John Parente as commissioner. Parente is athletics director at Johnson & Wales. The conference also chose Michael Burns, sports information director at Emerson, as league sports information director ... The Southwestern Athletic Conference named Robert Vowels Jr. as commissioner.

NATIONAL OFFICE

D'Ann Keller and Colleen Etheridge were hired as assistant directors of championships. Keller has been a sales representative for Pacers Sports and Entertainment, and Etheridge has been an event management coordinator at Michigan State ... Tamara Gingerich and Andrea Worlock were named as accountant I at the national office.

ASSOCIATIONS

The U.S. Olympic Committee promoted Kevin Neuendorf to USOC manager of media services. Neuendorf has been with the organization for two years and has been coordinator of media and public relations.

CORRECTION

The article on NCAA membership totals in the September 16 issue of The NCAA News inadvertently did not include Becker College in the list of Division III institutions currently in the fourth year of provisional membership. Becker currently is a year-four provisional member, and thus will be eligible for active membership in 2003-04.

DEATHS

Matt Sklom, a freshman walk-on football linebacker at Ferris State, died September 11 after collapsing during practice. He was 18.

Former Mount St. Mary's women's basketball coach William F. Sheahan died in a traffic accident September 7. He was 63. Sheahan guided the program from 1981 to 1998 and retired with a school record of 372-104.

Lindsay Floyd, an assistant women's basketball coach at Alabama-Huntsville, died in an automobile accident September 18. She was 23. Floyd, who formerly played two years with the school, was a graduate assistant last season and was in her first season as an assistant coach.
