Groff announces plan to retire as AD

Wally Groff has announced plans to retire as director of athletics at Texas A&M.

Groff has been with the school since 1966, when he assumed responsibilities as business manager. He was elevated to assistant athletics director for business affairs in 1975 and was named associate director of athletics for finance in 1979. Groff also fulfilled two tenures as interim athletics director -- in 1981-82 and in 1993 -- before being appointed director of athletics August 31, 1993.

Groff graduated from Texas A&M in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in business. He also earned a master's degree from the school in 1965.

Texas A&M-Kingsville selected Rumaldo Z. Juarez as president. Juarez has been dean of the college of health professions at Southwest Texas State ... Albert L. Walker was named as president at Bluefield State. Most recently, Walker has been vice-chancellor for academic affairs at Elizabeth City State ... Loras appointed John E. Kerrigan as president. Kerrigan succeeds Joseph Gower.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Morehead State hired Joseph C. Smith Jr. as athletics director. Smith, who replaces the retired Mike Mincey, most recently has been athletics director at Eastern Kentucky ... Kim Tatro was promoted to director of athletics at Lawrence to replace Dave Brown, who will continue as head football coach. Tatro, who has been associate athletics director and head softball coach, will retain head coaching duties ... Hood hired Gilbert Romaine as director of athletics. Romaine has been assistant athletics director for development at Mount St. Mary's ... Eastern Kentucky chose Jack Lengyel as interim athletics director. Lengyel, formerly athletics director at Navy, Missouri and Fresno State, has most recently been interim athletics director at Temple ... Ron Whitson was named as acting athletics director at Transylvania. Whitson, who succeeds Brian Austin, is director of the school's physical education program and formerly was an assistant with the men's basketball program for 27 years before retiring from coaching in 2001.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Stefani Papageorge Webb, head women's soccer coach at Dallas, was promoted to senior woman administrator to replace Patricia Danko. Webb also will serve as head women's lacrosse coach ... Christian Brothers awarded additional responsibilities to Donna Crone as senior woman administrator. Crone, who will continue as head softball coach, succeeds Cheri Devault.

FACULTY ATHLETICS
REPRESENTATIVES

Southern Utah chose Deborah Hill as faculty athletics representative ... Morehead State appointed Peggy Osborne as faculty athletics representative. Osborne, who succeeds the retired W. Michael Brown, serves as an associate professor of marketing and has been with the school since 1979.

OF ATHLETICS

Karen McConnell was promoted to associate director of athletics at Heidelberg. McConnell has been senior woman administrator ... Lawrence elevated John Tharp to associate athletics director. Tharp will continue as head men's basketball coach, a position he has held since 1994, and as head men's golf coach ... Northern Kentucky promoted Cris Stickley to associate athletics director for athletic training and risk management. Since 1999, Stickley has worked as an assistant athletic trainer ... Jean Lojko, an assistant athletics director, senior woman administrator and head volleyball coach at Greensboro, was elevated to associate athletics director. Lojko, who has been with the school for 22 years, was an assistant athletics director and will continue as senior woman administrator and head volleyball coach ... LSU named Herb Vincent as associate athletics director for external affairs ... Bill Gorman was elevated to associate athletics director at Wentworth Institute. Gorman has served as sports information director since October 1995. ... Dartmouth hired Brian Austin as senior associate athletics director. Sean Morrison was named as assistant athletics director for development and marketing at Fairleigh Dickinson. For the past six years, Morrison has worked in various capacities at Marist, most recently as director of alumni affairs ... Myndee Larsen was named as assistant athletics director for student services at Southern Utah ... Venera Flores was promoted to assistant athletics director at Dallas. Flores has been head women's volleyball coach and will retain head coaching responsibilities ... Pepperdine chose Eric Foote as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions.

Spanky McFarland, head coach at James Madison, signed a four-year contract extension through the 2006 season ... Val Innocente retired as head coach at Roger Williams. Innocente has been head coach for the past seven years and led the program to its first Commonwealth Coast Conference championship last season ... Todd Huffman was tabbed as head women's basketball and golf coach at Dubuque ... Leon Barmore retired as head coach at Louisiana Tech. Barmore completes his second tenure as head coach at the school. He also guided the program as co-head coach from 1981 to 1985 and as sole head coach from 1985 to 2002.

Women's basketball assistants -- Pennsylvania named Erin Ladley as an assistant coach ... Chad Filley was tabbed as a graduate assistant at North Dakota State ... Brian Borski accepted additional duties as head men's and women's cross country coach at Dallas to replace Lon Rork, who resigned. Borski will continue as director of student activities ... Oklahoma appointed Rodney Rothoff as head men's and women's coach ... Muskingum hired Keith Whitman as head cross country and track coach. Hamilton has been a PGA pro for 22 years ... John Bermel accepted additional responsibilities as head women's coach at Northern Iowa. Bermel will continue as head men's golf coach ... Johnson and Wales named Mike Lurgio as head coach ... Mark Murphy was selected as head men's and women's golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach at Penn State-Behrend ... Men's and women's lacrosse -- J.P. Stewart was selected as head men's coach at Virginia Wesleyan. Stewart formerly was an assistant at North Carolina ... Dickinson hired Kasey Ryan as head women's lacrosse and assistant field hockey coach. Ryan most recently has been with Brandeis ... Laura Brand was appointed as head women's coach at Rutgers ... Shenandoah added Lois Bowers as head women's lacrosse and head field hockey coach. The field hockey program will compete at the club level in the fall of 2002 and begin varsity competition in 2003. Bowers formerly guided the lacrosse and field hockey programs at Gettysburg from 1978 to 1992, earning a national championship in field hockey in 1980 ... Brian Voelker was hired as head men's coach at Pennsylvania. For the past two years, Voelker has worked as head coach and assistant general manager of Major League Lacrosse's Baltimore Bayhawks ... Fran Meagher was hired as head men's lacrosse coach and assistant football coach at Moravian.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Jen Mikulec was chosen as an assistant women's coach at Western New England ... New Paltz State selected Lillian Staab as an assistant women's coach.

Women's rowing -- Trinity (Connecticut) named Lou O'Brien Berl as head women's coach ... Amber van Heel was hired as head women's coach at Saint Mary's (California). Last year, van Heel worked as head juniors coach and fulfilled administrative duties at North Bay Rowing Club.

Women's rowing assistants -- Kansas State added James Rawson and Paula Donald as assistant coaches ... Marc DeRose was tabbed as lightweight rowing coach at Columbia.

Men's soccer -- Curt Lewis was named as head coach at Cornell to succeed Patrick Bourgeacq. From 1999-01, Lewis was head women's coach at Mount St. Clare ... Michael Linenberger was promoted to full-time head coach at Sacramento State. Linenberger, the 2001 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation soccer coach of the year, has been the school's sole head coach since 1992 ... Curry's Brendan Donahue resigned as head coach. The school appointed Morten Jorgensen as Donahue's successor ... Adam Clinton accepted responsibilities as head coach at Rensselaer ... Dan Wagner was hired as head coach at Franklin & Marshall. Since 1999, Wagner has served as head boys' soccer coach at Penn Manor (Pennsylvania) High School.

Men's soccer assistants -- Eastern Illinois added Kyle Mittendorf as an assistant coach ... Virginia Wesleyan tabbed David Raich as an assistant ... Western New England named Steve Dunbusky as an assistant coach ... Matt Crist was named as an assistant at Franklin & Marshall. Crist is a 2002 graduate of Messiah, where he helped the men's soccer team earn four conference titles, make four NCAA Division III national championship appearances and capture the 2000 national championship.

Women's soccer -- Sacramento State tabbed Karen Hanks as head coach to replace Sandra Asimos. For the past seven seasons, Hanks has been head coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills ... Tom Condone was awarded duties as head coach at Rutgers-Newark. Most recently, Condone has been head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan College ... Laura Ray was awarded interim head coaching duties at Cortland State. During the 2001 season, Ray served as an assistant coach at Akron ... Jim Woodcock accepted additional duties as head coach at Randolph-Macon. Woodcock, who will continue as head men's lacrosse coach, has spent the last six years as an assistant soccer coach ... Chris Case was tabbed as head coach at Fredonia State ... Rensselaer chose Leslie Khachadourian as head women's soccer and lacrosse coach.

Women's soccer assistants -- Kristin Boeker assumed duties as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois ... Mercer chose Stefanie Kraay as an assistant coach ... Morehead State added Doris Sullivan as an assistant coach. Sullivan replaces Jennifer Gordon ... North Dakota State chose Matt Howe as a graduate assistant coach ... Mike Dias was selected as an assistant coach at Western New England ... Gwynedd-Mercy selected Art Mathesian and Katherine Kensey as assistant coaches ... Softball -- Lois Kahl was appointed as head coach at Manhattan ... Dallas promoted assistant coach Marie Thomas to head coach to succeed Venera Flores, who was elevated to assistant athletics director ... Al Fecso was selected as head coach at Rutgers-Newark to succeed Celia Mosier. Fecso has been assistant manager and coach of the New Jersey Divas since 1998.

Softball assistants -- Brooke Adams-Franquet was named as an assistant coach and Kimmy Carter was named as a volunteer assistant coach at Jacksonville ... East Carolina chose Natalie Kozlowski as an assistant ... Christine Hornak was named as pitching coach at Campbell ... Armstrong Atlantic hired Ansley Paschal as a graduate assistant coach. Paschal is a 2002 graduate of the school and was a four-year starter for the softball team.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Evansville hired Rickey Perkins as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach to succeed Clark Campbell. Perkins has spent the past three years as head assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and academic coach at Washington ... Brian Striker was named as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Alfred ... Western New England appointed Andrea Daley as head women's coach ... UC Irvine promoted Brian Pajer to head men's and women's coach to succeed Charlie Schober, who became director of aquatics at the school. Pajer has served as an assistant coach since 1999.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Chris Gage assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Xavier ... Arthur Albiero was promoted to associate head swimming and diving coach at Alabama ... Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Mario Wilson was selected as an assistant coach at Bucknell ... Lance Deal became a volunteer assistant at Oregon for the 2002-03 season. Academic services -- Nova Southeastern named Nino Berticelli as coordinator of athletics academic services. Berticelli formerly was an intern with Major League Soccer's Miami Fusion and also formerly served as an assistant men's soccer coach at Notre Dame.

Administrative -- Dan Cetrone accepted additional responsibilities as supervisor of athletics recruitment services at Greensboro. Cetrone will continue to serve as head men's lacrosse coach ... Merchant Marine appointed Nicole Procaccio as events coordinator and operations assistant. For the past year and a half, Procaccio has been assistant sport coordinator for the directors of lacrosse and soccer at the United Sports Training Center.

Athletic trainers -- Leslie Parker was chosen as women's athletic trainer at Heidelberg. Most recently, Parker has been a graduate assistant at Massachusetts ... Tampa named Scott Brickett as head athletic trainer. Brickett has been assistant athletic trainer at Hillsborough Community College from 1996 to 2002. John Fitzgerald resigned after two years as director of marketing and promotions and radio and television play-by-play announcer at Loyola (Illinois) to become sports director at WJBC radio in Bloomington, Illinois, and to fulfill play-by-play duties for Illinois State basketball and football ... Tom Bruya was named as director of marketing and corporate partnerships at Santa Clara. Bruya takes over for George Husack, who was named as head men's tennis coach at the school.

America East selected Michael Antonaccio as assistant director for communications and Julie Raynor as director of operations. The league also elevated Daniel Riester to administrative assistant. Antonaccio has been assistant sports information director at Hartford since May 2001 and Raynor has been at Connecticut since 1993, most recently serving as assistant director of athletics for personnel and administrative services. Reister spent the 2001-02 academic year as an administrative intern with the conference ... The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference hired Elizabeth Kelleher as assistant to the commissioner. Kelleher is a 2002 graduate of Ithaca ... The Mid-Continent Conference hired Angie Torain as assistant commissioner for institutional services. CORRECTIONS

The name of the school where Kevin Varnado accepted coaching and equipment management duties was omitted in the August 19 edition of The NCAA Record. Varnado was named as assistant men's and women's soccer coach and athletics equipment manager at Francis Marion.

REPRIMAND

The NCAA Division III Wrestling Committee has reprimanded Montclair State University head wrestling coach Steve Strellner for unsportsmanlike conduct. The incident occurred in March during the 2002 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Specifically, Strellner made profane and disrespectful comments to a student-athlete from an opposing team. Those comments seriously violated the NCAA's sportsmanship and ethical conduct principles. The committee decided to issue a public reprimand of Strellner and withhold transportation and per diem expenses for the Montclair State coach involved in the competition. Strellner also was disqualified from further participation in the 2002 championships. The match official also issued a one-point team deduction for unsportsmanlike conduct.

NOTABLES

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced its Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year awardees. The honor, which is presented by the NFCA and sponsored by Diamond Sports, the NFCA's official protective equipment, recognizes players in 10 divisions including the following NCAA divisional winners: NCAA Division I -- Stacey Nuveman, senior, UCLA; NCAA Division II -- Tracie Schioppi, junior, Cal State San Bernardino; NCAA Division III -- Shannon Fritzke, senior, Pacific Lutheran.

Jessyca Arthur and Daniel Klemetz were named as winners of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship award. Honorees are chosen based on tennis accomplishments, scholastic and extracurricular achievements, sportsmanship, leadership, character and humanitarian concern and accomplishments. Arthur, a senior at William & Mary, helped the school to an 18th place finish nationally and was chairperson of the campus Student-Athlete Advisory Board. Klemetz, a junior at Middle Tennessee State, is a two-time member of the dean's list, and was an ITA all-America selection during the past season.

DEATHS

Former Texas-Arlington football coach Claude Gilstrap died August 9. He was 88. Gilstrap coached at the school, then known as Arlington State, from 1953 to 1965 and also worked as athletics director there for 22 years.

Former Purdue men's basketball player Gary McQuay died of leukemia on August 15. McQuay, 24, competed with the program from 1997 to 1999 and made 94 career appearances, including seven starts.
