Hansen hired as head volleyball coach

Northern Arizona has hired Michelle Hansen as head women's volleyball coach. Hansen replaces Kelley Sliva, who accepted the head coaching slot at New Mexico.

For the past five seasons, Hansen has guided the women's volleyball program at Western Carolina. Before that, she spent two years as an assistant coach at Utah State and two years as head coach at Lake Superior State. Hansen also served as varsity head coach at Paso Robles (California) High School for two seasons. During 2000-01, she worked as an assistant coach for the U.S. Deaf Women's National Team and helped the squad earn a silver medal in the 2001 Deaflympics.

Hansen was a four-year member of the Cal Poly women's volleyball team and earned all-America recognition as a senior in 1989.

Utica/Rome named Peter Cayan as president. Cayan has been dean of engineering and professor of mechanical engineering at Northern Arizona ... South Carolina State appointed Ernest Finney Jr., former chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, as interim president ... Ann Hopkins announced plans to retire as president at North Florida. Hopkins will continue with the school as a professor of political science ... Susan Resneck Pierce announced plans to retire as president at Puget Sound, effective July 2003.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jan Forsty, assistant athletics director, head softball coach and head women's volleyball coach at Bethany (West Virginia), was promoted to athletics director, replacing Wallace Neel, who will remain as the chair of the physical education department ... Kentucky hired Mitch Barnhart as director of athletics. Barnhart, who has been athletics director at Oregon State for four years, replaces interim AD Terry Mobley and former AD Larry Ivy ... Oregon State appointed Bob DeCarolis as interim athletics director. DeCarolis has worked as senior associate athletics director since 1998 ... Joel Maturi was named as athletics director at Minnesota after serving in the same capacity at Miami (Ohio) for the past four years ... Massachusetts chose Ian McCaw as director of athletics to replace Bob Marcum. Since 1997, McCaw has been director of intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation at Northeastern ... Vermont's Rick Farnham announced plans to retire as director of athletics, effective June 2003. Farnham joined the athletics department as an assistant football coach in the early 1970s and has been athletics director since 1992 ... Cleveland State named Lee Reed as athletics director ... Fairleigh Dickinson announced Ann Gulino as interim athletics director to succeed Steve Hurlbut. Gulino has been with the school since 1986 and most recently has served as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... Larry Lee was hired as director of athletics and physical education at Allegheny. Lee, who succeeds Rick Creehan, has been an associate athletics director at Denver ... Kevin Buisman was selected as director of athletics at Minnesota State-Mankato. Since 1998, Buisman has worked as associate director of athletics for sports management at Northern Iowa ... Marybeth Lamb was named as athletics director at Regis (Massachusetts). Lamb, who succeeds the retired Judy Burling, served as athletics director at Newbury from 1993-00 ... John Chandler was elevated to director of athletics at Coe after serving in an interim capacity most recently. Chandler, who replaces the retired Barron Bremner, has been with the school since 1988 and has served as assistant athletics director since 1993.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Kelly Lloyd was promoted to associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Northern Arizona. Lloyd, who succeeds Kelly Woodward, has been assistant athletics director for academics ... Sharon Manning Beverly was named as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Vassar. Beverly has been head women's basketball coach for three seasons and senior woman administrator at New Jersey Institute of Technology ... Penny Allen-Cook, senior woman administrator and head volleyball coach at Alma, resigned. Cook led the volleyball program for six seasons in addition to working as an assistant women's track coach ... Lynn Holleran was elevated to senior associate athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator at Boston College. Holleran has been with the school for 10 years.

FACULTY ATHLETICS
REPRESENTATIVE

Towson appointed Howard Nixon as faculty athletics representative to succeed Maggie Faulkner, who has held the position since 1995. Nixon has been a member of the faculty for seven years and is acting dean of the college of extended programs.

Lafayette selected George Bright as associate director of athletics ... Randy Langejans was promoted to associate athletics director for operations at Northern Arizona. Langejans has been with the school since 1985 and has been assistant athletics director for business for the last 12 years ... UAB chose Rick Christophel as senior associate athletics director ... Boston College promoted Jim Paquette to associate athletics director for development and elevated Eric Ziady to associate athletics director for business operations. Paquette has been assistant athletics director for development since 1997, and Ziady has been at the school since 1998.

Baseball -- Peter Egbert was chosen as head baseball coach and equipment manager at Fitchburg State to replace Matt Gallant. During the past season, Egbert has worked as an assistant baseball coach at Fairfield ... Lewis and Clark appointed Reed Rainey as head coach. Rainey, who succeeds the retired Jerry Gatto, was an assistant at George Fox in 2001 ... King's (Pennsylvania) named Jerry Greeley as head coach ... Matt Ballou and Dave Baker were elevated to interim co-head coaches at Central (Iowa) to replace Scott Renning, who resigned. Ballou, who enters his ninth season at the school, has been pitching coach, and Baker begins his fourth season as an assistant with the program ... Jeff Richardson resigned as head coach coach at Louisiana Tech. The school announced Brian Rountree as interim head coach ... Ohio Northern selected Milan Rasic as head coach. Most recently, Rasic has been top assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Methodist.

Baseball assistants -- Stetson's Tom Riginos was named assistant head coach at Clemson. Riginos has been an assistant at Stetson for nine seasons. Terry Rooney, a second-year assistant at Stetson, will take over as top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Stetson also named Mitch Markham as a full-time assistant and selected Frank Martello as a volunteer assistant coach. Markham has been a volunteer assistant for two years, and Martello was head coach at DeLand (Florida) High School from 1997-01 ... North Carolina State added Billy Jones as an assistant coach ... George Roig accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic ... Charlotte chose Brandon Hall as pitching coach ... Ray Greene was named as an assistant coach at St. Andrews. Greene served as a volunteer assistant during the 2000-01 season.

Men's basketball -- Arkansas-Pine Bluff released head coach Harold Blevins. Blevins has led the program for seven years ... Bloomsburg's Charlie Chronister retired as head coach, but he will continue with the faculty until January and will assist with basketball operations. Chronister has guided the program for 31 years ... Penn State-Altoona hired Armon Gilliam as head coach. Gilliam formerly played professionally in the NBA for 13 years ... Rich Mills was selected as interim head coach at Bloomsburg ... Bloomfield added Gerald Holmes as head coach ... Joe DeSantis, head coach at Quinnipiac, signed a contract extension through 2004 ... St. Andrews hired Rob Perron as head coach. For the past three years, Perron has been associate head coach at Pfeiffer and formerly was associate head coach at St. Andrews from 1996-99 ... Mike Martin resigned as head coach at Abilene Christian. Martin has guided the program since 1999. The school elevated assistant coach Stephen Hamrick to interim head coach.

Men's basketball assistants -- Dan Peterson resigned as director of basketball operations at Charlotte, effective August 15 ... Alvin Williams was appointed as an assistant coach at Denver ... Portland's Eddie Hill resigned as an assistant coach. The school appointed Keith Brown as an assistant and named Rich Wold as recruiting coordinator ... Rod Jensen was selected as an assistant at Virginia. During the past seven years, Jensen has been head coach at Boise State. Virginia also announced that Scott Shepherd will serve as director of basketball operations and Alexis Sherard will become an assistant coach. Shepherd has been an assistant with the program for three seasons, and Sherard formerly was director of basketball operations ... George Mason appointed Eric Konkol as an assistant. During the past year, Konkol has been a graduate administrative assistant at Tennessee ... Chris Sparks assumed responsibilities as an assistant at Rhode Island College. Since 1999, Sparks has been an assistant coach at New England ... Mike Shedd was selected as an assistant coach at Furman ... Larry Krystkowiak resigned after 14 months as an assistant coach at Old Dominion ... Nate Tuori takes over for Tim Saliers as an assistant at Toledo. Women's basketball -- Brad Duckworth accepted responsibilities as head coach at New Paltz State... Henderson State added Jeff Caldwell as head coach to replace Sandra Rushing. Caldwell has been an assistant coach at Texas A&M since 1999 ... North Carolina A&T chose Saudia Roundtree as head coach. Roundtree, who formerly played professionally in the now-defunct American Basketball League, has been interim head women's coach at Morris Brown ... Kenneth Conley was released after 11 years as head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff ... Jon Herbrechtsmeyer resigned as head coach at Cornell College to become head coach and athletics facilities manager at Bethel (Minnesota) ... Liz Cranmer Briggs was appointed as head women's basketball and head women's golf coach at Susquehanna ... Jim Flanery was promoted to head coach at Creighton after most recently fulfilling the position on an interim basis. Flanery, who spent 10 years as an assistant with the program, takes over for Connie Yori.

Women's basketball assistants -- Kentucky Wesleyan named Ron Williams as an assistant coach ... Nicki Collen was hired as an assistant at Ball State to succeed Kristin Cole. For the past two seasons, Collen has been an assistant at Colorado State ... Jennifer Greenwell, Robyne Bostick and Gina Tophoney were added as assistants at Long Island ... Mars Hill selected Jennifer Brabson as an assistant. Most recently, Brabson has worked as head freshman girls' coach and assistant varsity girls' coach at Bearden (Tennessee) High School ... Northern Illinois added Jerilyn Cushing as an assistant and elevated Rhonda Dart to top assistant. Cushing has been an assistant at College of Charleston for three years, and Dart has been with the program since the 1998-99 season ... Texas-San Antonio named Marianne Sevin as an assistant coach ... Joy Holmes-Harris was selected as an assistant at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis ... New Jersey Institute of Technology appointed Amy Valentino as an assistant coach. Valentino, who replaces Tammy Millsaps, was an assistant at Pittsburg during the 2000-01 season ... Northwest Missouri State's Angie Kristensen resigned as an assistant coach ... Rachael Gobble was awarded responsibilities as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech. Gobble, who succeeds Niya Butts, was a student assistant coach with the program in 2001-02 ... Erin McGinnes was appointed as an assistant coach at Catawba ... North Dakota State added Rachael Otto Bomstad as an assistant coach. Bomstad, who has been the sophomore girls' basketball coach at West Fargo (North Dakota) High School since 1997, replaces Tonah Safranski.

Men's and women's cross country -- Joyce Brobeck was selected as head men's and women's coach at Pittsburgh-Greensburg. The program is scheduled to begin competition in fall 2002. Most recently, Brobeck has been an assistant track coach at the high-school level ... Sinead Delahunty Evans assumed responsibilities as head women's coach at Regis (Massachusetts). Evans was head women's track coach at the school last season ... Drew added Dave Hagan as head coach. Hagan replaces Joe Dugandzic, who had coached for six seasons ... Sondi Creglow assumed additional responsibilities as head men's and women's coach at Newberry. Creglow, who also works as assistant softball coach, adjunct faculty and assistant dean of students, takes over for Brian Perry. Perry will continue as head men's and women's tennis coach ... Northwest Nazarene tabbed John Spatz as head cross country and track and field coach.

Men's and women's cross country assistants -- Lisa DiIenno was named as an assistant coach at Drew ... Scranton named Heidi Wolfsberger as assistant men's and women's cross country coach.

Men's and women's fencing -- New Jersey Institute of Technology will not renew the contract of Witold Rak. Rak has been co-head coach for one year.

Men's and women's fencing assistant -- Amy Reibman was chosen as an assistant at Drew. Reibman has spent the past year as a volunteer assistant with the program.

Field hockey -- MaryKate Madden was appointed as head coach at Richard Stockton. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2003. For the past two years, Madden has been head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach at Misericordia ... Kim-Michael Mertes was appointed as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach at Virginia Wesleyan. Formerly, Mertes was an assistant at Eastern Connecticut State ... Jennifer Pelleriti was chosen as head coach at Washington & Jefferson.

Field hockey assistants -- Scranton chose Ray Handley as an assistant coach ... Mary Jacobs was appointed as an assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach and equipment manager at Wheaton (Massachusetts).

Football -- Rob Ambrose resigned after one year as head coach at Catholic to become quarterbacks coach at Connecticut. Catholic promoted Tom Mulholland as Ambrose's successor. Mulholland, who has been with the program for nine years, most recently has been head assistant coach and defensive coordinator ... Lincoln (Missouri) released head coach Jack Bush and announced Fred Manuel, an assistant coach, as interim head coach. Bush had been head coach since 1997, and Manuel has been assistant head coach and defensive coordinator ... Butler's Ken LaRose resigned as head coach. LaRose has been head coach since February 1992. The school promoted Kit Cartwright to head coach to succeed LaRose. Cartwright has been serving as offensive coordinator for the past four seasons ... Bucknell named associate head coach Dave Kotulski as acting head coach for the 2002 season. Kotulski takes over for Tom Gadd, who is on a leave of absence for health reasons.

Football assistants -- Joe Kaup was chosen as quarterbacks coach at Bethany (West Virginia) ... Greensboro tabbed Robert Koy as quarterbacks and wide receivers coach ... Cornell (Iowa) named Adam Bentz as defensive line coach and assistant track coach ... Clarion selected Nick Calcutta as offensive coordinator ... Fitchburg State added Mike Harpin as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, John Haverty as defensive backs coach, Jim McGuire as running backs coach, Nat North as offensive line coach, Tim Gallant as wide receivers coach and Redford Salmon as volunteer defensive assistant coach ... Northern Arizona hired Scott Swartz as wide receivers coach to replace Chris Wiesehan, who will move to offensive line coach. For the past three seasons, Swartz has worked as a graduate assistant coach at Oregon State ... Maine promoted Jeff Cole to running backs coach, tight ends coach and special teams coordinator and moved assistant Jeff Comissiong to defensive line coach. Cole is his fourth season with the program and has spent the past two as wide receivers and tight ends coach. Comissiong has been running backs coach for two years. The school also named Robb Smith, an assistant at Iowa for the past two years, as defensive backs coach ... Jim Shiffer was hired as offensive line coach at Kutztown to replace Ron DeVincenzo, who resigned. For the past 11 years, Shiffer has been an assistant at Millersville, most recently fulfilling responsibilities as assistant head coach and linebackers and special teams coach ... Terry Wells was selected as defensive line coach and Mack Jorth was selected as receivers coach at Central (Iowa). Wells, who was defensive coordinator at Southeast Polk (Iowa) High School from 1996-01, replaces Kyle Nelson. Jorth has been an assistant at Grinnell (Iowa) High School for four seasons. The school also promoted Eric Jones to offensive coordinator to replace Dick Bowzer, who will move to tight ends coach. Jones has been with the program for eight seasons and will retain duties as offensive line coach ... Alcorn State chose Michael Ellis as offensive line coach ... Ron Burton was tabbed as defensive line coach at Grand Valley State ... Troy Rothenbuhler was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Heidelberg. Rothenbuhler, who has spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Arkansas State, succeeds Jerry McDonald as offensive coordinator. McDonald will serve as offensive line coach during the 2002 season ... Merchant Marine selected Dan Marino as an assistant coach ... Jeff Jacques was appointed as defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator and Erik Kruppe was appointed as linebackers coach and film coordinator at Truman State. Both Jacques and Kruppe were volunteer assistant coaches with the school last year. The school also announced that associate head coach Matt Copeland will assume duties as offensive coordinator after serving as defensive line coach for the past two years. Matt Nelson will serve as the sole defensive coordinator after sharing the position last season ... Cornell College added Adam Bentz as defensive line coach and assistant track and field coach. Bentz has spent last season as a student assistant at Buena Vista ... Missouri-Rolla hired Marc Kolb as offensive coordinator. For the past three seasons, Kolb has been offensive coordinator at Fairfield ... South Dakota State added Luke Meadows as offensive line coach, replacing Craig Russow, who resigned as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to become assistant director of admissions at the school. For the past two seasons, Meadows has been offensive line coach at Wartburg. The school also announced that defensive line coach Tim Steinbach will assume Russow's recruiting coordinator responsibilities and linebackers coach Karl Ballard will succeed Steinbach as special teams coach. Kris Garry was selected as a graduate assistant receivers coach ... Allan Gerber was tabbed as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Randolph-Macon. For the past four seasons, Gerber has worked as offensive coordinator at North Carolina A&T ... Edward Hottle was appointed as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator and Josh Rutherford was tabbed as assistant offensive line coach at Wesley. Hottle was defensive coordinator at Denison in 2001, and Rutherford succeeds Dwayne Martin.

Men's and women's golf -- Dick Spybey retired as head men's coach at Alabama ... Sheryl Maize assumed duties as head women's coach at Memphis ... Jared Purvis was named as head men's and women's coach at Valdosta State ... Northern Illinois added John Cleary as head men's coach. Cleary has been at Northwestern, where he was an assistant women's coach for three seasons and was an assistant men's coach this past season ... Ron Dubois was appointed as head coach at Connecticut ... Carroll selected Warren Garstecki as head women's coach. Since 1994, Garstecki has worked as an assistant at Oakwood Golf Course in Wisconsin and has been assistant girls' golf coach at Thomas More (Wisconsin) High School since 1999 ... Beth Fox was hired as head women's golf coach and assistant women's basketball coach at Muskingum. For the past three years, Fox has served as head women's golf coach and assistant women's basketball coach at Bluffton ... Cynthia Ho was appointed as head women's coach at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Loyola Marymount chose Alex Galvan as head men's coach. During the the 2001-02 season, Galvan was a volunteer assistant with the program and has been an assistant golf pro at The Los Angeles Country Club.

Men's and women's golf assistant -- Rick Harmon Jr. was awarded responsibilities as an assistant coach at Rice.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Jason Lesteberg was hired as head women's coach at St. Cloud State. Last season, Lesteburg served as head women's coach at Bemidji State.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Bentley awarded assistant coaching duties to Mark Tarmey ... Lainie Ann Wintrup was hired as an assistant women's coach at Maine. From 1999-01, Wintrup served as head coach for the Vincent Massey Collegiate female hockey team in Canada.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Moravian named Fran Meagher as head men's coach ... Randolph-Macon appointed Jessica Spadafora as head women's coach. For the past two years, Spadafora has been an assistant women's coach at Manhattan ... Randall Flynn was named as head women's coach at Bucknell to replace Barb Jordan. Flynn has been head coach at Franklin & Marshall since 1999 ... Kevin Pezanowski resigned as head men's coach at Curry ... Virginia Wesleyan's Mike Pounds resigned after two seasons as head men's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Megan Ann Riley was chosen as an assistant women's coach at Vanderbilt ... Pfeiffer named Daniel Lawrence as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's rowing -- Michael Guerrieri was chosen as head men's coach at Hobart, and Sandra Chu was chosen as head women's coach at William Smith. Guerrieri has been an assistant men's coach at Michigan for three seasons, and Chu has worked as an assistant women's coach at Kansas State for the past three seasons.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- George Washington hired Helen Betancourt as women's novice coach.

Men's and women's skiing -- Jeremy Frost was elevated to head women's Nordic ski coach at St. Cloud State after filling the post on an interim basis during the 2001-02 season.

Men's soccer -- Dawson Driscoll resigned after four seasons as head coach at Missouri-Rolla to become head coach at Tampa ... Mercyhurst added Keith Cammidge as head men's and women's coach ... Seamus Reilly was hired as head men's soccer and head men's tennis coach at Muskingum. Reilly has formerly coached at Walsh, Middlebury, Baldwin-Wallace and Youngstown State ... Franklin & Marshall chose Dan Wagner as head coach to replace Andy Woolley. Since 1999, Wagner has been head boys' soccer coach at Penn Manor (Pennsylvania) High School.

Men's soccer assistants -- Michael Hanchar was hired as an assistant coach at Drew. Hanchar has been an assistant coach at the high-school level ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) named Adam Donroe as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Regis (Massachusetts) appointed Mark Clemente as head coach and sports information director. Clemente spent one year as assistant women's soccer coach at Roger Williams ... Bethany (West Virginia) selected Frankie Taal as head women's coach. Taal has been an assistant men's coach at the school for four years ... Rebecca Hornbacher was hired as interim women's coach at Iowa State ... Eric Lewis accepted responsibilities as head coach at Guilford. During the 2000 and 2001 seasons, Lewis was head women's coach at Louisburg College ... Westminster (Missouri) added Heidi Kocher as head coach. Women's soccer assistants -- Florida International awarded assistant coaching duties to Daniel Brizard. For the past two seasons, Brizard has served as an assistant at South Alabama ... Kelly J. Miller was appointed as a graduate assistant at Heidelberg. Miller has been coaching the 14-under team affiliated with the Indy United Soccer Club team for the last two seasons ... Rhode Island College appointed Jessica Robitaille was hired as an assistant coach. Robitaille is currently a math teacher at Cranston (Rhode Island) High School East.

Softball -- Southwest State head coach Brenda Carlson resigned ... Kevin Proffitt was hired as head coach at Randolph-Macon ... Drexel appointed Terry DeTuro as head coach ... NOTABLES

Bubba Thornton, head track and field coach at Texas for the past six years, and Angie Taylor, head women's track and field coach since 1999, have been named as head men's and women's coaches, respectively, for Team USA at the 2003 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Paris, France. Other NCAA coaches selected to serve as assistants include: Harvey Glance, head coach at Alabama; Ed Miller, an assistant at California; John McDonnell, head cross country coach at Arkansas; Kim Duyst, head men's and women's track and field coach at Cal State Stanislaus; Cliff Rovelto, head coach at Kansas State; and Annie Schweitzer Bennett, director of track and field at Wake Forest.

Bob Brooks, former play-by-play radio announcer at Iowa, was named as the 2002 Chris Schenkel Award winner. Presented by the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame Inc., the honor is given to a college football broadcaster on the local level who has excelled professionally and contributed to the community. Brooks, who has been named national sportscaster of the year six times, began his radio career as a volunteer for WSUI in Iowa City and eventually became sports director for KHAK-FM in Cedar Rapids. Now semi-retired since after the 2001 season, Brooks does play-by-play for high-school games.

DEATHS

Keith Alan Adams, a football player at Gettysburg, was killed in an automobile accident. He was 23. In nine games as a starter last season, Adams intercepted four passes and was the team's second-leading tackler.

Wally Pontiff, a baseball student-athlete at LSU, died July 24. He was 21. Pontiff, a three-year letter-winner and starting third baseman for the past two seasons, was a member of LSU's national championship team in 2000.

Jimmy Warfield, former athletic trainer at Franklin & Marshall and trainer with MLB's Cleveland Indians, died July 16 after suffering a brain hemorrhage. He was 60. Warfield was a member of Franklin & Marshall's athletic training staff in the late 1960s before moving to the Cleveland Indians' AA affilitate in 1969. He joined the major league team in 1971.

Former Virginia Tech football player and assistant coach, Tommy Groom, died of a heart attack at the age of 57. The captain of the 1966 Hokie team returned to the school in 1987 for a four-year stint as tight ends coach. Groom also was an assistant at Brown, Army, Marshall, Maryland, Kentucky and Marietta.

LaVerne H. Taylor, a former football player at Michigan, died July 17. He was 94. Taylor, a 1931 graduate of the school, was the first man to score at Michigan Stadium, but his career was shortened by a neck injury. Taylor went on to serve as an assistant at Syracuse and Michigan State and also was head coach at Oregon State for seven seasons.

Morris E. Bailey, a former football student-athlete at Texas Christain, died July 17. He was 77. Bailey, an all-Southwest Conference receiver in 1948 and 1949, went on to play one season in the Canadian Football League.

Former UCLA volleyball player and Olympian Kirk Kilgour died July 10 at the age of 54. The three-time all-America selection helped UCLA capture national championships in 1970 and 1971 and was selected to the 1972 U.S. Olympic team. Kilgour served as head volleyball coach at Pepperdine from 1979-81. He later became a sportscaster and worked as a color analyst and interviewer during Olympic volleyball telecasts in 1984, 1992 and 1996.
