Newberry hires Carter as athletics director

Andrew Carter has been named as director of athletics at Newberry, effective September 1.

For the past 15 years, Carter has been a coach, instructor and athletics administrator at NAIA-member Missouri Baptist College. He began there as an assistant baseball coach and admissions recruiter. Later, Carter served as a business administration and economics instructor. In 1991, he was elevated to head baseball coach. During his nine-season tenure, he led the program to seven straight American Midwest Conference championships. He also earned coach-of-the-year honors. In 1999, two years after accepting additional responsibilities as athletics director, Carter relinquished his post as head coach to concentrate solely on athletics administration duties.

Carter earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Missouri Baptist.

James T. Harris III was named as president at Widener. Harris has been president at Defiance ... Fordham President Joseph O'Hare announced plans to retire, effective in the summer of 2003 ... Carol Z. Garrison, acting president at Louisville, was chosen as president at Alabama-Birmingham ... McMurray appointed John Russell as president. Russell has been executive vice-president for academic affairs at West Virginia Tech ... Richard A. Gustafson, president at Southern New Hampshire, announced plans to step down, effective in the summer of 2003. Gustafson will continue with the school as president emeritus, assisting with fund-raising and alumni relations ... Ohio State named Karen Holbrook as president, effective October 1. Holbrook has been provost at Georgia.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Johnson C. Smith chose Henry White as athletics director ... Ball State hired Lawrence Cunningham as athletics director, succeeding Andrea Seger. For the past two years, Cunningham has been associate athletics director for external affairs at Notre Dame ... Cindy Jones announced plans to retire as athletics director at Southern Illinois effective in December. Jones, who has been with the school since 1975 and has been athletics director since 1988, stepped down, effective August 1, and became consulting athletics director. Southern Illinois named Bradley L. Hewitt as Jones' successor. Hewitt has fulfilled various roles at the school since 1989 and most recently has been assistant vice-chancellor for development and public affairs and adjunct professor in the department of kinesiology and health education ... Tom Jurich, athletics director at Louisville, signed a four-year contract extension through 2016. Jurich has guided the athletics department since October 1997 ... Alma appointed Jim Cole as athletics director to replace Denny Griffin, who resigned as athletics director but will continue as head softball coach. Cole has been head football coach for 11 seasons and will retain head coaching responsibilities.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATORS

Debby Day was hired as assistant athletics director, senior woman administrator and head softball coach at Cal Lutheran. Day, who replaces Jodi Eyraud as head softball coach, has been head softball coach and a special education teacher at Burbank (California) High School since 1997 ... Leanne Ulmer was promoted to senior woman administrator at Carthage. Ulmer will continue as head women's volleyball coach at the school ... Nichols selected Janna Cunningham as senior woman administrator and head women's lacrosse coach ... North Carolina A&T's Holly Trexler resigned as assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator ... Kansas named associate athletics director Janelle Martin as senior woman administrator. Martin has fulfilled the SWA post on an interim basis since last fall.

Lafayette chose Kimberly Keenan-Kirkpatrick as associate director of athletics ... Jason Fein was selected as associate director of athletics/sports information director at Staten Island ... James E. Kathryn Statz was chosen as associate athletics director for varsity sports at DePaul. For the past eight years, Statz has served as assistant athletics director for Olympic sports marketing and compliance at Marquette ... Richard Konzem was promoted to senior associate athletics director at Kansas. Konzem has been at the school for 22 years and most recently was an associate athletics director ... John Pagliarulo accepted responsibilities as assistant athletics director for recreation at Boston College. Pagliarulo, who has been director of recreation, fitness and intramurals at the school since July 2000, succeeds the retired Ed Carroll ... Janis Ragsdale was elevated to assistant athletics director at Harding ... Ferris State selected Brian Kegler as assistant athletics director. Since October 2000, Kegler has worked as a sports marketing and promotions assistant at Notre Dame ... Jack Molloy resigned as assistant athletics director/sports information director at Brandeis to become an athletics director at the high-school level. Molloy has been with the school since 1985 ... Kansas elevated Gary Kempf to assistant athletics director. For the past year, Kempf has been director of operations ... Leonesio formerly was head coach at Monterey Peninsula College ... Rocky Ward was chosen as head coach at New Mexico State ... Augsburg appointed Douge Schildgen as head coach ... David Keel, an assistant at Alabama-Huntsville, was promoted to head coach ... Greg Beals, an assistant at Kent State for the past nine years, was hired as head coach at Ball State. Beals replaces Rich Maloney ... Sam Piraro was awarded a two-year contract extension through 2006. Piraro has guided the program for 16 seasons ... Willie Gawlik was named as head coach at Texas-Pan American to succeed the Reggie Tredaway. Gawlik formerly has been head coach at Central Arkansas and Texas Wesleyan as well as at the high-school level ... Southeastern Louisiana hired Dan Canevari as head coach to succeed Greg Marten. For the past 12 years, Canevari has served as an assistant coach at LSU.

Baseball assistants -- Presbyterian selected Elton Pollock as an assistant coach ... Rodney Batts was elevated to an assistant coach at Delta State ... Alabama-Birmingham chose Nick Dumas as an assistant ... Tim Brownlee was added as an assistant coach at Illinois State ... Jon Strauss accepted duties as an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount ... Georgia State promoted David Hartley to associate head coach and elevated Shane West to assistant coach. Hartley has been an assistant with the program for 11 seasons, and West was a volunteer assistant coach last year. The school also named Josh Hopper as volunteer assistant coach.

Men's basketball -- George Moore was promoted to head coach at Medgar Evers after most recently serving as an assistant coach ... Staten Island's Tony Petosa was granted a one-year leave of absence as head coach. The school announced Brian Gasper as interim head coach ... Drew Catlett resigned as head coach at West Virginia Tech ... Rod Barnes, head coach at Mississippi, accepted a one-year contract extension through 2006. In four seasons as head coach, Barnes has guided the program to three NCAA tournament appearances ... East Stroudsburg hired Jeff Wilson as head coach to replace Mike Power. Wilson has been associate head coach at Lehigh since 1996 and formerly was associate head coach at East Stroudsburg from May 1987 to April 1996 ... Northwest Nazarene hired John Spatz as head cross country and track and field coach to replace Randy Dalzell, who resigned after three years. Spatz has been head track and field coach at Eastern Oregon for 12 years ... Bob Marchinko was tabbed as head men's and women's coach at Pfeiffer.

Men's and women's cross country assistants -- Birmingham-Southern appointed Michael Marquardt as an assistant coach ... Chad Myers was awarded responsibilities as an assistant men's and women's coach at Ohio State.

Field hockey -- Davidson named Lisa Thompson as head coach ... New Paltz State named William Davidson as head coach ... MaryAnn Foley Schiller was appointed as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach at Haverford ... Shelly Behrens was selected as interim head coach at Virginia Commonwealth. Behrens, who takes over for Dawn Hill, served as head field hockey coach at Richmond from 1997 to 2000 and was an assistant for the U.S. Field Hockey National Team in 2000 and 2001 ... Robyn Fedor was promoted to head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach at Misericordia. For the past two seasons, Fedor, who replaces MaryKate Madden, has been an assistant with the programs.

Field hockey assistants -- Dawn Hill was hired as an assistant coach at Delaware, succeeding Val Coyle. Hill has worked as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth for the past five seasons ... Dartmouth awarded assistant coaching responsibilities to Andy Smith.

Football -- Colorado head coach Gary Barnett was awarded a contract extension through 2007. Barnett, who has led the program since 1999, guided Colorado to the 2001 Big 12 Conference championship.

Football assistants -- Steve Molohon was appointed as an assistant at Upper Iowa ... Montressa Kirby was selected as wide receivers coach at Jacksonville State ... Humboldt State tabbed Reggie Bolton as assistant head coach and selected Jaime Hill as defensive coordinator ... Delaware hired Frank Law as part-time assistant coach and Brandon Walker as graduate assistant coach. Law has served as an assistant at Rowan since 1972. Walker, who succeeds Derek Barlow, was a graduate assistant at Henderson State this past spring ... William Paterson appointed Jerry Flora as associate head coach, wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. Flora has spent the past nine seasons at Iona, the last three as wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator ... Chris Roarty assumed duties as an offensive intern at Randolph-Macon. Men's and women's golf -- Jim Hutnik was named as head coach at Lafayette ... North Dakota State appointed Diane Fedje-Weisgarber as head women's coach. Fedje-Weisgarber, who succeeds Steve Zarr, has been a coach and teacher in the Fargo (North Dakota) Public Schools since 1996 ... Upper Iowa chose Howard Thompson as head men's golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach. The school also selected Heath Teeter as head women's golf coach and assistant women's basketball coach ... Dave Schliepsiek was chosen as head men's coach at Bradley. Schliepsiek takes over for Bo Ryan, who will continue as head women's coach ... Brown named Mike Harbour as director of golf and head women's coach and named Edward Hanley as head men's coach. Harbour was head coach at Johnson and Wales from 1998 to 2002 and has worked as head golf professional at Cranston Country Club since 1998. ... Katie Weiss was appointed as head women's coach at Minnesota.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Cornell selected Melody Davidson as head women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Tim Christian was tabbed as an assistant coach at Lake Superior State. Christian succeeds Paul Jerrard ... Harvard added Claudia Asano and John O'Donnell as assistant women's coaches. Asano has been associate athletics director and has coached several sports at Middlesex School in Massachusetts. O'Donnell, who formerly was equipment manager for the school's men's and women's ice hockey teams, formerly competed professionally and coached at the high-school level.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Matt Hogan resigned as head men's coach at Pennsylvania ... Bruce Reid was chosen as head women's coach at Lynchburg to succeed Enza Steele. Steele will continue as assistant athletics director, head field hockey coach and associate professor in the health, movement science and recreation department. Reid, who has been an assistant coach with the program since spring 2001, also serves as assistant director of admissions at the school ... Mike Murphy was named as head men's coach at Haverford ... Ann Marie Vesco was appointed as head women's coach at Drexel.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Maryland's Jon Stainbrook resigned as an assistant men's coach ... Dartmouth tabbed Dan Chemotti as an assistant men's coach ... Andrew Fink was awarded duties as assistant lacrosse coach and assistant intramural supervisor at Mount Ida.

Men's soccer -- Staten Island hired Salvatore Parello as head coach ... Hiram hired Dan Palmer as head coach to replace Chris Yeager. For the past six seasons, Palmer has worked as head men's and women's coach at William Woods University ... Missouri-Rolla tabbed Vince Darnell as head coach to succeed Dawson Driscoll. Since last season, Darnell has been assistant men's and women's coach at William Woods University.

Men's soccer assistants -- Kristen Lehrer was elevated to assistant coach, Hugo Perez was named as an assistant and David Alexander was chosen as goalkeepers coach at San Francisco ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis appointed Kevin Demers as an assistant coach ... Kevin Varnado was appointed as an assistant men's and women's soccer coach and athletics equipment manager. Last season, Varnado was an assistant men's coach at St. Andrews ... Bridgewater (Massachusetts) named Kevin Fitzgibbon as an assistant coach ... Mount Ida hired Brian Linnehan as an assistant coach ... New York University named Nick Penze as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Jason Keller was selected as head coach at Westminster (Pennsylvania). Keller, who replaces his father, Tom Keller, has been an assistant women's coach at Campbell for the last two seasons.... Bluffton tabbed Ben Simcox as head coach ... Matt Granstrand was added as head coach at North Dakota.

Women's soccer assistants -- Fairleigh Dickinson hired Lydia Bienias as a graduate assistant coach ... Eric Bell and Dale Armstrong were added as assistants at Illinois ... Minnesota chose Chris Higgins as an assistant coach ... Kim Murray was chosen as an assistant coach at Belmont. Murray replaces Johnnie Anderson.

Softball -- Northern Iowa promoted Christy Hebert to head coach. Hebert, who has been an assistant for two seasons, replaces Sara Hayes ... Gina Battista resigned as head coach at Staten Island ... LeTourneau added Sheron Schoon as head coach ... Susan Punzo was hired as head coach at Northwest Missouri State. For the past two seasons, Punzo has served as assistant athletics director and head softball coach at Dakota State University ... Pacific (Oregon) named Tim Hill as head coach. Hill, who succeeds Melissa Jones, has been head coach at George Fox for two seasons ... Nancy Oestrike resigned as head coach at Eastern Michigan ... Bonnie Benson was named as head coach at Mount Ida ... Roxanne Berch resigned as head coach at Cal State San Bernardino. Berch has guided the program for nine seasons ... Softball assistants -- Lee Dobbins was awarded assistant coaching duties at Tusculum. Dobbins formerly was an undergraduate student assistant at Tennessee from 1999-01 ... Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tabbed Thomas McLauchlin as an assistant coach. McLauchlin has spent the past two and a half years as an assistant at Oklahoma Baptist.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Florida International selected Noemi Zaharia as head women's swimming and diving coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Jacqueline McLaughlin accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Davidson ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis tabbed Sarah Leone and Patrick Morgan as assistant swimming coaches ... Andy Bashor and Rick Pratt were selected as assistant coaches at Rutgers ... Maine elevated Susan Lizzotte to a full-time assistant. Since 1999, Lizzotte has worked with the program on a part-time basis.

Men's and women's tennis -- Nichols named Sean Cote as head men's and women's coach to replace Ed Socha ... Louisville chose Greg Davis as head women's coach. Davis has been head men's and women's coach at Auburn University-Montgomery, where he guided the program to NAIA national championships in 2000 and 2001 ... South Alabama appointed Jaco Keyser as head women's coach ... Robert Palmer was awarded duties as head women's coach at Worcester Tech ... Santa Clara elevated assistant men's coach George Husack to head men's coach. Husack succeeds Sean Burns ... J.D. Gravina was promoted to head men's coach at Missouri-Kansas City. Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Stephanie Nickitas was named as an assistant women's coach at Harvard. Nickitas helped capture two NCAA national team championships and earned two NCAA doubles national championships as a member of Florida's women's tennis squad before graduating in 1999.

Men's and women's track and field -- Minnesota State-Moorhead appointed Keith Barnier as head men's and women's track and cross country coach ... UNLV named Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson as head women's track and field and cross country coach ... Missouri-Kansas City added Irv Ray as head coach. For the past five years, Ray has been head track and field and cross country coach at California Baptist University ... Kelly Cox was tabbed as head women's coach at James Madison.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Jeff McAuley was named as an assistant women's coach at Penn State ... Sita Waru accepted duties as an assistant coach at Lamar. In 2002, Waru worked as an assistant at the middle-school level ... UC Irvine added Kevin McCarthy as an assistant men's and women's coach. McCarthy, who formerly was an assistant at UC Irvine from 1986 to 1991, most recently has been director of men's and women's cross country and track field at Cal State Los Angeles ... Men's and women's water polo -- Jon Lederhouse assumed responsibilities as head women's coach at Wheaton (Illinois). The program is scheduled to begin competition in the 2002-03 school year.

Wrestling -- Heidelberg promoted Jason Miller to head coach. Miller, who succeeds Brian Cochran, has been head volleyball coach and assistant wrestling coach.

Administrative -- Loyola Marymount hired Ryan Jamrog as corporate relations manager. Most recently, Jamrog has been with More Than Just A Game, a special projects organization that assists in the development and implementation of marketing and business plans for sports franchises ... Decker Uhlhorn was selected as executive director of external affairs at Pennsylvania.

Athletic trainer -- Holly Rose Snyder, associate trainer at Washington & Lee, was promoted to head trainer ... Eric Rozen was added as athletic trainer at Rochester.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Morehead State added Sara Larson and Jennifer Miller as graduate assistant athletic trainers. Larson is a 2002 graduate of Missouri, and Miller is a 2002 Ohio State graduate ... Gretchen Benz was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Maine. Benz has been an athletic trainer at Richmond since 1997 ... Merchant Marine chose Janine Greco as an athletic training intern. Development -- Maine named Joe Roberts as director of athletics development. Since 1997, Roberts has worked as assistant athletics director for media relations at the school ... Pennsylvania appointed Audrey Schnur as director of athletics development ... Augustana (South Dakota) added Jon Eng as director for athletics development to succeed Carol Oakland. Eng has been with the school for 11 years and has most recently been senior associate director in the admissions department.

Development assistant -- Craig Diehl was named as associate director of athletics development at Pennsylvania.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- John McCallister, a graduate assistant coach with the school, was hired as assistant strength and conditioning coach at West Virginia. The school announced Gary Thompkins as McCallister's successor as a graduate assistant coach.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference appointed Dennis Thomas as commissioner ... Dwayne Harrison was chosen as associate director of media relations at Conference USA ... The Southwestern Athletic Conference named Patrick Carter as associate commissioner and Jay Roberson as assistant commissioner ... The Eastern College Athletic Conference chose Lou Filippetti as officiating coordinator for men's basketball and named Paul Levy as officiating coordinator for fencing. Filippetti has been an official for the conference for 33 years and has been an official at the Division I level for 29 years. Levy, the third-ranked fencer in the United States in 1959, is chairman of the Veterans Committee for U.S. Fencing ... The Horizon League promoted Stephanie Jarvis to assistant commissioner for compliance and legal affairs and hired Dana Thomas as assistant to the commissioner, Beth Hall as assistant director of communications and officiating and Allison Benner as championships and compliance intern. Jarvis has spent the past three years as director of compliance and in-house counsel. For the past year, Thomas has worked as interim committee coordinator and a staff assistant in governance with the NCAA national office. Hall was a sports information assistant at St. Rose last year. The league also announced that Molly Stearns will return for a second year as an intern in basketball operations. Stearns spent last year assisting in various areas.

Damani Leech was promoted to membership services representative II/coordinator at the national office ... Marc Comstock resigned as an enforcement representative at the NCAA ... Mike Bailey, manager of licensing at the NCAA, resigned ... Angela Womack resigned as manager of promotions at the national office.

DEATHS

Amar Brisco, a former football defensive back at UNLV, died August 4. He was 24.

Marv Goux, a former football player at Southern California, died of cancer July 27. He was 69. Goux, who competed as an offensive and defensive player in 1952, 1954 and 1955, became freshman coach with the school beginning in 1957. He also was varsity offensive line, defensive line coach and eventually assistant head coach. From 1983 until his retirement in 1994, Goux worked as defensive line coach and as an administrator with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams.

Earland I. Carlson, former president at Westminster (Pennsylvania), died June 24.

Tom Wilson, former editor of The NCAA News from 1982 to 1991, died of cancer July 31.

Ed Geisz, former swimming coach at Villanova, died July 21. Geisz was 78.

Joseph L. Toland, former rowing coach at Saint Joseph's (Pennsylvania), died July 18. Toland was 73.
